Free images ?

Hello,

I'm a little bit puzzled by the licencing of File:BRL-CAD logo.png (maybe because I'm not a native english speaker). The page says "Non-free media use rationale - non-free logo" and then "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby release it into the public domain."

Therefore my question: is this image public domain, and can it thus be uploaded on commons?

BTW, I created there a commons:category:BRL-CAD.

The image is indeed in the public domain and is available on commons. The non-free media label is a mistake from copying a media template.

I'm afraid I don't find it on commons.
Thanks for your interest in my work. In fact, I'm curious in learning BRL-CAD and the best way for me is to make a manual, so I'm obliged to read the doc. and to test ;-). I'm teaching to students in mechanical engineering, but they have a too low level for BRL-CAD (not enough geometry background), so I can't spend too much time on it — I will not use it directly, now, in my job.
So I'm afraid I don't have time for the translation of 1M words right now, maybe in 40 years when I'm retired.
I think I'll build my own tutorials; the existing ones are very well, but they do not concern my present job, so my boss may be puzzled.
By the way, I have a few questions (they are probably in the doc., but I didn't find it so far):
  • is there a way to make a standard drawing, e.g. X-Y view with standard line thickness, hidden lines, hatching, something like File:DIN 69893 hsk 63a drawing.png?
  • Are there libraries for standard parts such as screws, bearings, etc.?
  • Is there a way to set contraints on two solids (e.g. axes parallel, vertex of one on the axis of the other, etc.) or do the user have to know well geometry?

Haha, there's no way I'd expect anyone to translate 1M words... It took many people 20 years to write that much documentation to begin with. Contributing in any way at all is always appreciated, though, whether it is via documentation, code, or even simply bug reports. To answer your questions:
  • Yes and no. You can definitely generate the diagrams (via rtedge), but not with annotations and measurements. That is a feature currently being worked on, but still in development.   • There are tools that generate standard "parts", but they vary in quality and domain. For example, there is a "tire" tool that will generate a detailed treaded tire per a standard tire definition. There is a bolt tool for creating standard bolts (unthreaded) of varying dimensions. There are dozens of such tools.
  • BRL-CAD does not yet support constraints.

Thanks for thoose precisions. What does rtedge will be far enough for my purpose now. Onecmore little question: is there a way I can generate helices (e.g. springs or screw threads)?

There is a "coil" tool that can be used to generate springs. Screw threads are still a little more tricky (for arbitrary threading styles) until we have a sweep primitive implemented, but you can get an approximate screw thread using a pipe primitive subtracted from a cylinder (or a coil from the coil tool subtracted from a cylinder).
The Principles of Effective Modeling document at http://brlcad.org/wiki/Documentation describes how to use the pipe primitive and gives an example creating a spring.
There is separate documentation on the "coil" tool, but I'm not sure it's uploaded anywhere just yet. I'll see if I can find it and get it posted.
