Replaceable fair use File:John Furlong.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:John Furlong.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Gump Stump (talk) 00:45, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please delete CoatofarmsUW.gif from University of Windsor Wiki entry
Greetings,
Please delete the image, CoatofarmsUW.gif from the University of Windsor Wikipedia entry. This is not the University logo.
Thank you.
John Powell Director of Web Development University of Windsor —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.207.108.135 (talk) 18:22, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Mr. Powell - please note it is inappropriate to blank an image or remove it from the Wiki page unless there is concensus to do so. In addition, the Coat of Arms IS an official logo in accordance to the materials on UWindsor's website[1]. While the "branding" of the university has changed, the CoA did not simply ceased to exist. In accordance to the Canadian Heraldic Authority, the logo was re-registered in 2007, further showing it is an official logo. [2] --Cahk (talk) 19:16, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Cahk: Unfortunately, the Coat of Arms is not the official University of Windsor logo. Please refer to: http://www.uwindsor.ca/pac/the-uwindsor-brand. As you have identified the University of Windsor does maintain a Coat of Arms but it is not the official University logo. Wikipedia does not define a Coat of Arms as a logo. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms), nor does the University consider the Coat of Arms as a logo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.207.108.135 (talk) 19:18, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
- Again, what you are referring to is the "branding" of a university. There are plenty of examples where shields of CoA was used.[3][4][5] In fact, the CoA was proudly display in a convocation ceremony picture on your website [6] and elsewhere [7][8]. As well, you should referred to Template:Infobox university where it defines logo as "corporate emblem" and image as "university's official seal or logo". The CoA, as granted by the Governor General, is the official seal of the university. If you wish to dispute that, feel free to provide examples of parchments or official documents under seals where the "branding" is used. I am otherwise unconvinced, for your message represents nothing more than a commerical representation of the branding exercise. --Cahk (talk) 22:48, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
- To further illustrate my point, the Fall 2010 convocation programme also featured the CoA shield [9] (P.11)--Cahk (talk) 02:46, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

- I am an official representative of the University of Windsor Office of Public Affairs and Communications. The Coat of Arms and the logo are two different entities. The Coat of Arms has remained mostly unchanged for decades. The logo was updated in 2007. What our office requires is that on the Wikipedia site, the image of the Coat of Arms is listed just as that, the Coat of Arms. To call it a logo simply looks as though whoever wrote up the entry does not understand the difference. The Coat of Arms is only used for official University of Windsor Senate business. The logo has much broader usage. There is an obvious difference between these two graphics and that should be made clear. We appreciate your attention to this matter. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.207.108.135 (talk) 13:32, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
- Mr. Powell, it's evident you do not understand how Wikipedia works. Please read Wikipedia:No original research - your statement that the CoA is not an official university logo has yet to be substantiated with any evidence (We are not disputing that the 'branding' is in use). If you are referring to the "non-free logo" status, etc on the image wiki itself - you should know that it is a standard wiki template. I also think you failed to understand how the infobox work - "logo" and "image" are 2 distinct matter, feel free to check out other institutions such as University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, etc to see the difference. For your sake, I know the difference between a CoA and a branding, and have asked you to clarify all along. --Cahk (talk) 16:24, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
