December 2007

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see

Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. Thank you. ~Sasha Callahan (Talk) 00:25, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply

Hello

I have declined the request to block your username for spamming external links due to your apology to

this list of policies, if you care to read it. Useight (talk) 02:00, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply

Hi, I was using google and found a page by sashacallahan (blocked now?) an useight. I have updated bad/old links to my site on wikipedia, and on one occasion because I found a bunch of stubs had added some links. I think I was blocked in December 2007 from updated links due to this, and just figured it out now when I googled this sasha page. I have two questions: (1) Am I barred forever from updating links, as I have a bad link to my site now due to moving the page, and (2) is there a summary page that is simple for wikipedia editing. Wikipedia is absurd to me with odd procedures and slang terms used (as well as a lot of incorrect Boston history information), and I date back to JCL and DOS 2.0. I presume useight will see this. Thank You.\ Celebrateboston (talk) 02:00, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Because your account was used for promotion of a company, group, product or organization with a username that violated

adding promotional/favorable content about something you are affiliated with
.

Use of Wikipedia for promotion of people, products, companies or other groups (even non-commercial or charitable ones) is considered

Wikipedia:FAQ/Organization and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest
for our policies about this.

In addition, user accounts are for individuals only, not for companies or groups or other collective editing. Your username should reflect this. Usernames that appear to be promotional (such as those that make reference to a company or product) violate our username policy and are typically blocked to enforce that policy.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a

Wikipedia administrator
that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Tell us what new username you want to use. Please make sure that your new username does not violate our username policy and check that it has not already been taken (click here to search).
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If instead you believe that you have been blocked by mistake (i.e., you have not in fact been using Wikipedia for promotional purposes), please write {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box and replace the text "Your reason here" with the reason why. See also Wikipedia:Appealing a block for more information.

Request reason:

I use my Wikipedia ID to update links that others have placed to my website. Per the Wikipedia policy, celebrateboston represents ME. I am the sole author and a historian. I use this id to UPDATE WIKIPEDIA LINKS TO MY SITE when I move pages. You can verify this by looking at my updates. I have a 400 volume library concerning the history of Boston, and have only edited Wikipedia pages that were extremely relevant. I have used this ID for a long time, and if it violates Wiki's name policy, then it should have been removed a long time ago. If my intention was to promote my site, I would have just masked my IP address. My intention is to promote HISTORY and to fix bad links in Wikipedia. The Boston editors have been linking to me for a long time and have seen my id. PLEASE unblock my id so I will have the capacity to revise links to my site when I move pages. I am upgrading from Frontpage to CSS and will move all my pages and images. Thank You.

Decline reason:

Sorry, I am sure you mean well, but our rules prohibit usernames that match website addresses, such as celebrateboston.com.  Sandstein  05:16, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Thank you for responding to my appeal request. I am very surprised that many editors previously had not banned my id, but I guess the essence of Wikipedia is complete independence and subjectivity of the editors (in my experience). And of course, the world wide web is full of scammers, so I do understand the policy. If anyone reads this message, I would appreciate a reply on what the official procedure is for updating bad links. I will just create a new account of course with a different name, as the user rename request procedure implied this. I will comply with all rules. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Celebrateboston (talkcontribs)

Why not
request a change of username? As long as the new account states that you used to be User:Celebrateboston and admits to your connection with the site celebrateboston.com; you continue not to add any links to your own website; and you make it clear in your edit summaries that you are simply updating a link, I would have no problem with that. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:40, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply
