HI Dan

Hi Dan how you doing? Just dropped in to give a small suggestion. I noticed you've copied my script into User:Dan Koehl/common.js. I noticed you've copied more than what is actually required. All you need to copy and paste is the below mentioned line:

importScript('User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js'); // Linkback: [[User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js]]

You can delete the following lines from your common.js page.

$( document ).ready( function() {
mw.util.addPortletLink(
'p-personal',
 mw.util.wikiGetlink('Special:NewPagesFeed'),
   'Page Curation',
   'pt-pagecuration',
'View Special:New Pages using the Page Curation tool',
   null,
   '#pt-preferences'
 );
});

Ping me if you need any further clarification. Thanks. Lourdes 02:46, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, @Lourdes:. What I actually have problems with, is the Curation_Toolbar, some year ago I could see it and use it, and then after som stupid reorganization/configuration, its gone, and I dont know how to get it back. I checked the browser, if popups were blocked, and unblocked it, still I dont see it.Maybe you can point me to any problem solver? Dan Koehl (talk) 06:54, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I had this problem once. Then I noticed two things. (1) The curation toolbar is not activated for many articles that are already reviewed and out of the new pages feed for a long time (2) That for new articles that are in the new pages feed, the curation bar can be activated by using a link that can be seen in your left hand side vertical menu bar under the heading titled "Tools". If you look below the heading, one of the items would be titled "Curate this article". Click on the same and your curation toolbar would be activated. But the "Curate this article" link would only be visible once you are at the new article's actual page. Hope this helps. Lourdes 07:28, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Its working now, thanks to your advice. Once again, thanks a lot for your support. Dan Koehl (talk) 08:12, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan,

As I'm sure you know, leaving an edit summary is hardly mandatory for every edit. If you looked at the content I removed from

I assume you made an honest mistake in blindly reverting my edit so I hope you'll fix that mistake by removing the inappropriate content.

Thanks, 66.112.86.189 (talk) 19:51, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, sorry for that, I reverted my edit. Dan Koehl (talk) 19:56, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Intrust

Hi Dan, Intrust is an Australian company (Insurance I assume...) that sponsors several rugby league competitions in Australia, namely the Queensland Cup and the NSW Cup. As I result, I have reverted your edits to 2017 New Zealand rugby league season that change it to Entrust. Mattlore (talk) 03:03, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, @Mattlore: for your fast input. Dan Koehl (talk) 03:06, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I see other AWB have "corrected" the spelling in other articles, do you know of any way to tell AWB that this mistake is intentional? Mattlore (talk) 03:12, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes @Mattlore:, there is: {{Not a typo|example}} should work, maybe a good idea to use in this case. Dan Koehl (talk) 03:20, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks Mattlore (talk) 07:50, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

Hello, Dan Koehl. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, and move subpages when moving the parent page(s).

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Hello! You are receiving this message because you have added yourself as a member of the Wikiproject Zoo. This is the first such message, however we hope that this can be used to coordinate editing and development of articles later down the road. If you wish to opt out of further messages remove yourself from the mailing list here , and if consider yourself not active within the project, please remove yourself from member list here. Hi Dan, how does this mailing list work? I haven't seen it in action before? Cheers ZooPro 05:04, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo @ZooPro:, good to hear from you, I believe you become more and more active again? Regarding the maillist, I requested it at Request_for_mass_message_delivery and made a mailing list here . Dan Koehl (talk) 05:18, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Dan Koehl: Yes I have decided to become more active, I have been needing to return for a while and have finally decided 2017 was the year for it. I have checked the mass message delivery page, looks rather interesting and could be an exceptional benefit across the projects. I hope you are well, seems we have lost a few users and gained a few while I have been gone, I am trying to be more active on WikiSpecies as well. Ill need a bit of time to get up to date but once that's done ill get back into the article space. ZooPro 10:44, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great that you are back @ZooPro:, I guess I have maintained artificial life support to the project, but havnt really seen any activity from other members, except @Donlammers:, which was partly the reason to start with mass_message_delivery in order to intensify contact with members, and sorting out, and removing inactive members. Apart from that, I have made some some Zoo stubs, and plan to import articles from other languages about various Zoos, which are not yet present on enwiki. I will feel much more inspired, now ehen you are back. Dan Koehl (talk) 13:17, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Dan, Sorry havnt been on lately, work has been insane haha, yeah I will be trying to get the projects back up and running at full capacity, just working through the changes and new system and then I will be good to go :) cheers ZooPro 10:14, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, @Robert McClenon:, I didnt even knew that articles "in-work" located on users subpages, should be reviewed?

Thanks for your kind advice @Robert McClenon:, and I am a reviewer myself, I have been here since 2002 and started over 50 articles, and I think you are wrong about the Bot.
I didnt use the "in-work" article in main space, it was in user space. As far as I can see the Bot made this move, a template was moved from a subpage to my user page, into that subpages talk page. So Im a little puzzled how you found that article before it was in main space, and what made you review it?
Nothing wrong with it, Im just qurious. Dan Koehl (talk) 17:00, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User:Dan Koehl - If you had the translated article in user space all the time, then I am not sure what the bot did. However, the page in draft space showed up at the top of the New Page Feed, that is, Special:NewPagesFeed. Pages that show up on the New Pages Feed are almost always in article space, in which case the real job of the reviewer is to decide whether to tag them for any of the deletions methods. As an experienced editor and a reviewer, you know that. What made me review it was just that seeing a page in user space was so unusual that I wondered if it should be moved into article space (no, it wasn't ready), and I wondered what was going on. I still haven't learned what is going on, in that I still just see a bot acting weirdly. Oh well. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:32, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert McClenon:: For some strange reason the bot moved the template about the translation from German, from the article page (in user space) to the talk page. It seems the bot is following some kind of consensus, that this template should not be included in the articles, but on the talk pages. havnt the foggiest why, though... Obviously this move made the article to show up in the New Pages Feed... Dan Koehl (talk) 17:47, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zoos template

Hi, and I see you've been keeping up with the zoo pages and project. Nice work. I haven't had the heart to look if the main zoo template has been replaced on all the zoo pages (the discussion said, I believe, that it was up to each project to decide if articles on lists, such as 'Lists of zoos', could contain a main template). Has it, and if not, can you use one of those tools to put them back? Thanks. When I run across zoo books and such I still think of the template of zoo media we discussed, back in the day. Good to 'see' you again. Randy Kryn 17:26, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo @Randy Kryn:, good to hear from you. I had completely forgotten those discussions, thanks for reminding, I guess you refer to this discussion?
Its kilometer with text, and I must admit, after rereading it, I cant see what the consenus was, except that my Bot was refused. Are you saying thet
AWB, but wants to be sure to follow the consensus from those old discussions... Dan Koehl (talk) 18:43, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply
]
Hi. That's quite a long read, so on skimming it again it seems the closer says question number 2, which asks if an entry on a list is the same as on a template, is inconclusive. I think I've read somewhere that each project can decide, and the discussion at the link centers quite a bit on the zoo template. So not being a wikilawyer I have assumed they are okay if the zoo project agrees. Maybe more editors can read that novel, and the after-discussion where question two was addressed by the closer, and see if they reach the same conclusion. Randy Kryn 21:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Randy Kryn: for confirming that its not easy to interpret the outcome of that long discussions. Maybe it would make sense, to put a question on that discussion, what the outcome and consensus was? Its so stupid, it all started with my request of approval for my bot, after @Oknazevad: claimed on my talk page it was against the rules (1), to put that template on pages without a link back.
I'm the user who pointed out to Dan that the {{Zoos}} template was being added to articles where it wasn't appropriate based on WP:BIDIRECTIONAL. He in the best of faith had been adding it based on an outdated to do list at the Zoos WikiProject page, where an item calling for the addition of that navbox to every page had been added back in 2006 (I removed that item in response to it being pointed out, in line with the general guideline) Because of this a great number of pages are out of sync with the general navbox guidelines, and this bot will aid Dan in bringing them into line with it without having to do such manually, a task that would be onerous for edits made in good faith. (I'm sure there are other such things in to do lists elsewhere, as such to do lists are frequently overlooked and often not appropriately updated.) oknazevad (talk) 22:33, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Mass message sender granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "massmessage-sender" user right, allowing you to send messages to multiple users at once. A few important things to note:

  • Messages should only be sent to groups of users who are likely to be interested in the topic.
  • For regular mailings such as those for WikiProjects, localized events, or newsletters, users should be informed of how they can unsubscribe from future mailings.
  • The mass messaging tool should never be used for canvassing with the intention of influencing the outcome of discussions.

For more information, refer to the guidance for use. If you do not want mass message sender rights anymore, just let me or any other administrator know and we will remove it. Thank you and happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 00:13, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For what ? You may ask. But through another user have I copied your "This user is Proud but disillusioned to be a Swedish Wikipedian in exile" - template. Splendid work. We are three in that category now. But obviously have several other Swedes also discovered this ("World Wide Wiki"), and have found it to for instance having sound administrators and a sound culture of such people. No one becomes blocked for arguing valid point as the talk-pages (if only avoiding to express personal feelings of fellow contributors) Clearly something is utterly wring "at home". As I see it, does a limited group (mainly living in your city, or nearby), self appointed themselves to be so called "intellectual elite" (even including some real youngsters). They have since around 2006 or 2007 taken all the administrator chairs, and actually rule our home Wiki. Impressing as it may appear, one of the largest in the world, but with the poorest metadata of all 1.000.000 articles. See for your self and compare [1] the collaborative measuring, labeled "Depth", have a (unitless) number of 900+ here, and only 5 there. Many of the Swedish articles are simply semi-automatic translations , taken from leads of this wiki, I presume. It's further my opinion that Mr "Hannibal" earlier tried to direct Swedish Wiki. But some 25 admins who all know each other, more or less, at least, have imposed a totalitarian ruling. That's my honest belief, at least. By the way, I know you have been among the first Swedish Wikipedians. I have read "Hannibal's" version of the history of (mainly Swedish) Wikipedia. Thank's for the Template & Cheers Boeing720 (talk) 07:31, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear from you, @Boeing720:, and sad to her you have similar experiences as me. I agree with you on every word, and the SvWiki as hijacked from a limited number of users who work against goal to create a free encyclopedia. I guess theirs not much we can do, but at least we can unite in some way, using that template as a beginning. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:51, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. Some possible joiners MIGHT be User:Hafspajen and User:Peter Isotalo (the latter one has earlier disapproved of me, but we no longer engage ourselves is the same general topics, and it was a long time ago as well). And indeed User:SergeWoodzing. You're close to famous at "home" , perhaps you could find out some more. Anyway thanks for your comments. Sw.wiki has been hijacked by a few with out any doubts. Declined speedy deletion nomination of Manjit Singh Sidhu 'Bitti'

Hello Dan Koehl. Speedy deletion work is important and I do appreciate the effort. I would just ask that you please review the

notability
– it does not, for example, require that the article's text already contain citations to reliable sources that would be necessary to prove notability, but only that it contain a claim that, were it true, might reasonably make the subject a valid encyclopedia topic (if proper sourcing could later be found) .Appable (talk | contributions) 18:29, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Charles de Solier, comte de Morette

Quote "Charles de Solier, comte de Morette (1480 – 1 February 1552), the son of Aubertin de Solier, comte de Morette (1465–1545), was a French soldier and diplomat as well as a long-serving gentilhomme de la chambre to Francis I.[1] He acted as ambassador to England on a number of occasions from October 1526 to June 1535.[2][3] Morette was in London in 1534 when Henry VIII was attempting to win French support for his repudiation of Catherine of Aragon, in an alliance against Charles V. Around this time, his portrait was painted by Hans Holbein the Younger. Holbein had also painted The Ambassadors, which depicted two French envoys, Jean de Dinteville, seigneur de Polisy and Georges de Selve, Bishop of Lavaur in 1533.[4] He was succeeded as ambassador by Antoine de Castelnau, Bishop of Tarbes !? You can reach me at , and pleaese delete the last part.. And "Francis I (French: François Ier) (12 September 1494 – 31 March 1547) was the first King of France from the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois, reigning from 1515 until his death. He was the son of Charles, Count of Angoulême, and Louise of Savoy. He succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII, who died without a male heir. A prodigious patron of the arts, he initiated the French Renaissance by attracting many Italian artists to work on the Château de Chambord, including Leonardo da Vinci, who brought the Mona Lisa with him, which Francis had acquired. Francis' reign saw important cultural changes with the rise of absolute monarchy in France, the spread of humanism and Protestantism, and the beginning of French exploration of the New World. Jacques Cartier and others claimed lands in the Americas for France and paved the way for the expansion of the first French colonial empire." For his role in the development and promotion of a standardized French language, he became known as le Père et Restaurateur des Lettres (the "Father and Restorer of Letters").[1] He was also known as François au Grand Nez ("Francis of the Large Nose"), the Grand Colas, and the Roi-Chevalier (the "Knight-King")[1] for his personal involvement in the wars against his great rival the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V. Following the policy of his predecessors, Francis continued the Italian Wars. The succession of Charles V to the Burgundian Netherlands, the throne of Spain, and his subsequent election as Holy Roman Emperor, meant that France was geographically encircled by the Habsburg monarchy. In his struggle against Imperial hegemony, he sought the support of Henry VIII of England at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. When this was unsuccessful, he formed a Franco-Ottoman alliance with the Muslim sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a controversial move for a Christian king at the time." Too bad e-mails didn't exist in those days... Was this of any help Boeing720 (talk) 00:29, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Dan Koehl,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 809 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at

PERM
, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering

Orangemoody
, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community
    ban
    .
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community
    ban
    .
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Genealogy

Hello, Dan! I see that you have some of your genealogy on Geni and WikiTree. I use them a little too, and each is excellent in some respects. I hope you have had a good look at Wikia:Familypedia, which, though relatively small (with only 218,000 articles so far), is closest to Wikipedia in style and software and may have the seeds of an eventual WMF genealogy project. I wasn't vandalizing...

Hi Dan Koehl! When you stated that I was vandalizing the New England Patriots page, it wasn't true. I was only adding real information and not any false information or any bad criticizing information towards the page. I was wondering if you could inform me of what I did wrong on my talk page at User talk:Jetrex3.

Your change was not verified by a source. And as User:331dot afterwards commented here: Previously reverted; if it's before one, it's before the other, unnecessary to mention both. . You may discuss this on the talk page, and if you add that part again, please add a source backing it up. Hope this helps. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:17, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But that's not vandalizing.....?? Adding to this, I added Super Bowl LI to the caption so that the readers can understand that the picture should include another additional two banners. The readers might not know that the Patriots are missing 2 banners but rather they might think that the Patriots should only have an additional 1 banner for only Super Bowl XLIX.

Verifying source? Dan Koehl (talk) 18:38, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In the caption of the picture before I made edits, it stated, "Super Bowl banners at Gillette Stadium prior to the Patriots winning Super Bowl XLIX". There was absolutely no verifying source to the caption. This led me to my conclusion of the fact that I didn't need a source either when writing the caption, "Super Bowl banners at Gillette Stadium prior to the Patriots winning Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LI". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jetrex3 (talkcontribs) 19:54, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing people's correct edits is not cool

Sometimes I really wonder why oblivious people like you are the regulators of Wikipedia, undoing constructive edits and impeding the flow of up to date information. If you have some common sense, you would have noticed the date for the airing of the drama and realized that the drama has been aired so it's not an upcoming drama anymore.

Tack, men...

Hej, Dan!

Thanks for the clean-up; but "Sark based" was no typo. It was an intentional use of the noun Sark as an attribute (an "adjectivistic" use, if you wish). As you know, English has not as much freedom in forming compounds by juxtaposition as Swedish or e.g. German; and this also goes for the hyphenated compounds. (I just found this link discussing whether to separate, hyphenate or juxtapose words; but I suspect that it is a bit US usage biased (or US-usage biased).) I'm not sure whether employing Sark as a noun adjunct rather than forming the innovative compound Sark-based was well done (or well-done) or not; but if it wasn't, then this rather was a mistake due to my limited knowledge of English grammar than just a typo. JoergenB (talk) 18:35, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ill bring the matter to the Typo teamconfiguration for AWB. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:38, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So, what you are saying is that AWB "thinks" that based should be preceded by a hyphen in such situations? I'm not that good at 'bot code; but I now did find the following at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos:
<Typo word="Anytown-based" find="\b([A-Z][a-z]+)\s+based\b(?<=\b(?:[Tt]he|[Aa]n?|of|from|by|for|with|other|between|to|his)\s+[A-Z][a-z]+,?(?:\s+[A-Z][a-z]+)?\s+based)(?!\s+(?:in|on|at|upon|along|his|her|their|its|largely|mostly|partially|a|an)\b)" replace="$1-based"/>
Now, my contruction was "the Sark based publishing company Small Island Publishing". Is it a correct guess from the code that AWB marked this as a possible typo, because I wrote three space separated (or space-separated) strings "the", <any capitalised alphabetic string of length at least two>, "based"? (Since Sark is a proper name, as I guess most naturally appearing words of the type [A-Z][a-z]+ are, and proper nouns seldom have the determinate article as in "the Sark", I do not think that there mostly is a real chance of misunderstanding in such cases; but if Anytown based in general should be replaced by "Anytown-based" in such cases, then probably the same goes for "Anyisland based", and, if so, I'll certainly try to follow this convention in the future.) JoergenB (talk) 19:56, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@JoergenB:, you may wish to bring this discussion here, where your opinion is, as far as I can see, challenged. Dan Koehl (talk) 20:00, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

anti nuclear ?

Dear Dan

thanks for your comments about my involvement with this subject.

I live quite near to s series of Nuclear plants, Brossele and Doel, the history of these plants there is a lot to tell about, actually we once just escaped a meltdown in Borssele, and another disaster in Doel when a turbine was sabotaged... the man (or woman ?) who leaked all the oil is still not identified...

Than the direction of the Belgium reactors Electrabel found out there could be chance of a meltdown every 10 years...

And this in a region where millions of people live and work...

Is there nothing to worry about, should we a Fukushima-like disaster near Antwerp or Maastricht & Aken too ?

Best wishes

I collected a lot of books, on Literature, Multatuli for instance, and Letterpress and all about making books too.
I'm involved with Monotype casters, and letterpress. You can see this at Monotype typefaces and elsewhere. I rather do this than following the news around nuclear plants...

Changed "Mestre Accordion" to "Mestre Acordeon"

Hi Dan Koehl,

I am and have been a significant contributor to the Bira Almeida web page over the years (in fact, that's a photograph I personally took of him at the top of that page). Bira is both my dear friend, and my teacher, and I have traveled with him, including internationally, several times. His apelido (or nickname) and professional name—including here in the United States—is "Acordeon," which is Portuguese for "accordeon," but he is not "Mestre Accordion." ("Acordeon" is even pronounced differently than "accordion." :) So I have, at his request, corrected what I am sure is an unintentional mistake, and wanted to take a moment to let you know that that page now correctly reflects Mestre Acordeon.

We have a problem here

I've twice removed an edit that said, "Milton needs its own Newstead Brewery, and in 2017, this dream becomes reality", which was placed under the 'attractions' section of an article. Both times I explained the rationale: the writing is unencyclopedic, and the introduction of a new brewery doesn't merit mention in an encyclopedia article. I've received two warnings from you for my efforts; I'm at pains not to return the favor. Creationism

Hi Dan

My name is David Cummins. While researching wikipedia's version of creationism, the term pseudoscience was used in initial sentence as reference to Creation Science.

The terms pseudoscience and science must first be made clear up front to the reader.

My suggestion:

To add a paragraph stating basis for this article's terms are as follows: 1) "Scientific Methods" term "Current Scientific Methods" 2) "Scientific Community" term " to " Current Scientific Community " 3) "Pseudoscience" term to "Pseudoscience as regarded by some members of the Scientific Community".

This makes the article much clearer and balanced when reading

I would also add these changes to each disambiguation..i.e. Creation Science, Creationism.

Since this is my first look at these articles I hope that my efforts are in accord with the intents and goals of Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charles Cummins (talkcontribs) 12:11, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You removed a lot of verified content with one edit and I couldn't really see an explanation for that. I can see on the Derringer talk page that there are different opinions on the content. Hopefully, you will find some solution. Dan Koehl (talk) 20:45, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Continue wrecking wikipedia with your abusive edits. Barely sourced from one local newspaper does not mean it accurate or relevant. It adds nothing to the article but tabloid journalism. This is why Wikipedia is so outdated. Poor editors. Learn "Do No Harm" . Next time it might be you. Bragging how much you have ruined is no source of pride., you aren't good enough to edit in my opinion. Give yourself another fake award104.34.203.182 (talk) 22:35, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have no knowledge or interest in that article, if you experience problems in regard to cooperation in the article, my advice is to submit the subject for mediation at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. Cleanup tags on in progress articles

Please avoid adding empty section tags or other cleanup tags to articles such as Randy Ambrosie when they have {{Under construction}} transcluded. That banner clearly indicates I was actively working on and expanding the article, so a cleanup tag that will be imminently addressed doesn't improve the encyclopedia. Thank you. ~ Rob13Talk 00:56, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Genealogy!

I'm a huge fan of making wiki genealogy a great project. I still have contacts at some of the other wiki projects that have tackled this. Are you active on any of them? Getting an active group together working on en:wp is a great step towards any further work (like drafting a technical spec for making the meta proposal real). Thanks for doing this and keeping us all informed. – SJ + 08:15, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Great @Sj:, maybe you would care to join as interested in a Wikimedia user group (dont forget to vote for the name of the group), support etsablishing of a mail list, and of course support the new project? Dan Koehl (talk) 08:31, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I would! I'm there :) Don't forget all of the people who signed up back in the day when it was just WeRelate looking for interest in collaboration. – SJ + 09:19, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, Your comments do not make any sense. The traditional text of the Lords Prayer has always been the one of the Vulgata. Introducing out of the blue sky the text the New Vulgata is completely unsubstanciated and therefore a falsification. Therefore the text of current use needs to be restored. David McKinney edits

Hi Dan,

Many thanks for the request for clarification for the edits I made to David McKinney's page.

David is a very well known journalist and TV presenter in Scotland. I am his brother. He is now Head of Media at Glasgow College and some of his students have been adding fictional content to his page. I have deleted the made up sections and left the factual sections intact. There is a lot more to add on his journalist career but it is finding the time to add it.

I did not create the or add any of the initial content. Any additions I made subsequently were factual and referenced.

Best wishes,

Hugh — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hugh McKinney (talkcontribs) 19:08, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Dan Koehl, why haven't you answered this message? Your restoring of unsourced, obviously made-up information in a BLP was totally unwarranted. It's OK to make mistakes, but you must pay attention when people complain about your mistakes on your talk page. Thanks and regards, Biwom (talk) 02:12, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Biwom, as you may see the editor and the person in the article have the same user name, and above the editor explains that he is the brother of the named person in the article. Such edits are not to recommend on Wikipedia, but after the editors explanation above, I didnt more involve myself in the topic, but let others take further decisions reg that article. If I made a mistake, please point me to that, however since it was not soever bad intentions from my side. I wish you happy editing, Dan Koehl (talk) 05:07, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your question regarding reliable sources. Are you aware that the user you asked hasn't edited in two years? - Anything self-published is not regarded reliable, - simple answer. It says nothing about its value. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:58, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks @Gerda Arendt:, I noticed afterwards that he was blocked. And I agree with reg to Wikipedia's rules for sources. still that article cites sources far, far less reliable than my site, and they didn't had that comment about being unreliable, so why should the most used website concerning elephants be marked like that? And my site is used as source on numerous other Wikipedia articles, without being marked as unreliable? So why just on that particular article? Dan Koehl (talk) 11:21, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

not sure why you reverted edits to the page. i removed completely uncited claims of AESA radars. mentioned the reason too. any defence personnel will tell you that china has not been able to develop AESA radars. which is why you will see a lack of refernces whenever such claims are made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 43.250.80.13 (talk) 04:34, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear 43.250.80.13, apart from one edit on B. N. Suresh your only edits on Wikipedia since you started two days ago, is removing large parts from the article Type 052C destroyer. It seems your 5th edit ever on Wikipedia is the beginning on an edit war? My suggestion is that instead if removing large parts from articles, discuss the removal first on the article talk page, and wait for response from other editors of that article. Hi Dan — Just noticed that you're based out of Phnom Penh, and was wondering if you'd be interested in helping me organize the next Wikipedia Meetup in the city? New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Dan Koehl,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 809 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again

Can you help verify translations of articles from German

Hello Dan Koehl,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from German to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original German article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including German , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from German. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

  1. Pinar Atalay
  2. Porr

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the German article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.

If you can help, please {{

ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 07:04, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Dan Koehl, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The

has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:

Problem with Other "Contributer"

⚠

Hello. Hope the day finds you well. Sorry to bother, but I have a recent problem with a user named MrX. It's a pity since I assume he must be a Mega Man fan (I am one myself, lol). Anyway, he has taken it upon him- or her-self to assume that my contributions are unworthy and dog-ear them for either speedy deletion, which I am working to fix by adding a band page for one since one album did not have and I used to be a classmate of one of the members, and the other simply because... he thinks the album unworthy? (I can only assume.) The album in question would be The_Gathering_(Glengarry_Bhoys_album). Since the premise is entirely subjective, he has no right and I have reverted at least one page, telling him so, and told him that I have reported him for wiki abuse, and that would be what I'm doing here right now. Also, on the related Glengarry Bhoys page, I have noticed that my use of the liner notes has been used by someone named Jennica to verify information there, so there is the entire possibility that I am merely being used as a stepping stone, and I really don't appreciate that at all. I just want to see that These people are not abusing me nor anybody else like this again. I have already dealt with enough of these kinds of circumstances the past several weeks. I won't stand for online intimidation any more than I would IRL. Again, sorry to bother, but I'm telling you now in case this becomes a further problem. I don't know what to expect from here on out, but I have high hopes that we can get this sorted. Sincerely, and thanks for your time. Blast Vortex (talk) 14:02, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Blast Vortex:, I hope you can sort this out. In any case, there are several possibilities to bring this issue to more eyes, instead of increasing a conflict, and my present suggestion is to to use them. Please give me a note if you need assistance. Dan Koehl (talk) 14:30, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
H'lo again. @Dan Koehl: Looks like it's going better now. I dropped a line in the reversion about non-authorization and potential for reporting problem (though I already had). He seems to have simmered down. Still contesting for deletion: either he doesn't like folk-rock or really hates bagpipes, my guess? (xD) Anyway, thanks for your time. Won't contact you again unless it gets serious. I appreciate your response. I never expected to see something so quickly. You guys are really on top of things. Very nice. Thanks again. :) Blast Vortex (talk) 16:38, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Correction @Dan Koehl: I was wrong. MrX now nominated the article for deletion anyway. And there's the fact that Jennica did use my article to boost her own numbers. This is clearly wiki abuse, and I'm going to tell them on the talk page that they are busted. I don't appreciate being used and abused. And since the proof is in the records, they are totally screwed. They shouldn't have pressed this. I'm sure you know what to do. Blast Vortex (talk) 16:56, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to pop in and say I am not abusing anybody. What a joke accusation. Blast Vortex didn't even reach out to me before accusing me of all these things. I don't do things to 'boost my record'. Clearly, you are taking it to heart that awhile back I nominated an article of yours for deletion? There is no personal vendetta. I don't even know who you are --Jennica / talk 17:14, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you nominated an article of mine for deletion it's news to me. I have a terrible memory anymore. Half of the time, I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast any more. Don't expect a rise out of me because you won't get one. It is, quite literally, near impossible. Both physically and mentally. Seriously, this sitting around to deal with this and typing is killing my arthritis. Blast Vortex (talk) 21:33, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Blast Vortex: then what is this about? I have literally no idea what you're accusing me of. --Jennica / talk 05:17, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jennica:Well, first there was the nomination for speedy deletion (User:MrX), and then there was the redirect back to the band's page (iirc, by MrX, not a great memory), and then finally your coincidentally timely update regarding sources for the band article. Maybe I think too much, but it screams "conspiracy" to me. Mind you, I've recently been robbed of one of my mental health support groups and I'm on the bounce-back and a bit shaky, so it's probably bad-timing to begin with. Anyway, he simmered down, but I'm particularly bad when it comes to confrontation and I needed a mediator. Plus the fact that I've lately been dealing with a lot of people banding together against me lately. It just looked mighty suspicious. Perhaps I had it wrong, and this is just a giant miscommunication. If that's the case, I'm truly sorry, but only if so. I've had to endure a lot of verbal abuse lately. It's kind of tiring. Sorry. Blast Vortex (talk) 15:22, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Blast Vortex: no, there is absolutely no conspiracy. I redirect albums to band pages from time to time when there is no notability - I search for reviews/charting info and when that cannot be found, it is redirected, however, it does not mean the content is gone forever. It is restorable. I think perhaps you should take some time away from this if you feel like it is impeding on your mental health. I am not out to do anything in a suspicious manner. I've never targeted you and have not banded against you. --Jennica / talk 15:29, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Academic sources and coherence

Battle of Elbistan: Somehow 11,000 Mongols while primary from the Mamluks by Ibn Abd Al-Rham contemporary chronicler of Mamluk Sultanate specify the numbers of 7000 which is even included in the article itself : "How can I rejoice? I had believed that if 10,000 horsemen of my army were to meet 30,000 Mongols, I would defeat them. But I met 7000 Mongols with all my army. The Mongols aroused panic and my army lost heart. The Mongols defeated the Muslim Left. Without Allah's grace, they would have defeated us. If I met them, and they were equal to the Muslims in size, or larger than they, then the matter would not have turned out well" - Baibars

"How can I be happy. I thought that I and my servants would defeat Mongols before, but my left wing was beaten by them. Only Allah helped us" The left wing was annihilated but somehow the casualties are few?

Mongol invasion of Europe and Mohi :

McLynn, F. (2015). Genghis Khan: His Conquests, His Empire, His Legacy. Da Capo Press: "It is true that Batu found a few hundreds casualties at Mohi too many"

"Modern historians tend to opt for about 20,000 mongolians versus 25,000 hungarians"

This is the estimate by modern historians, what's the point of using non translated hungarian sources that are most often not written by academics

"According to Bartl, the Mongol officer Siban spied the Hungarian camp some weeks before the battle, and counted 40 units. Hungarian units of the time, known as banderias, were usually between 50 and 400 men strong. An average size of 250 would indeed give a total of 10,000 men, matching the claims of the Epternacher Notiz"

Where does this even come from? What's the primary source because it is a fact that there is no chinese or persian source (the mongol sources as people say it) talking in any sort of depth about this battle, so it is definitely something from hungarian or europeans sources, which makes no sense whatsoever. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asteriset (talkcontribs) 12:08, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Also: "15,000 allempires.com, "The Battle of Mohi". Retrieved 2007." Allempires.com? This not even a secondary source, might as well reference to other wikipedia pages.

"The "History of the Yuan Dynasty" (Yuan shi) mentions that Batu lost thirty of his baaturs (heavily armoured bodyguards) and one of his lieutenants, Bakatu, when he personally assaulted a strong point with the vanguard."

No mention of this in the Yuan Shi, the western campaigns are barely mentionned, for example in Subutai's biography, it is just mentionned he conquered the world until the western ocean (atlantic ocean).

Here's how the Yuan Shi described battles:

"“(金)忠孝军却而复进,官努以小船分军五七十出栅外,腹背攻之,持火枪入蒙古军。特穆尔岱不能支,大溃 ,溺死三千五百馀人”。

"Furthermore, Meng Gong also defeated the Jin peasant general Wu Tianyi, who was said to have gathered "200,000 soldiers" to raid the border and also beating Yila Yuan and received the surrender of his 15,000 soldiers."

From the Jin Shi "选四万人刊石伐木,凿商淤之山,斡腹入蓝关之内,为合达所败,丧万余人及马数万匹"

"(The Mongols) selected 40,000 to cut stone and woods to dig a path through the mountain and enter the blue pass, they were defeated by Hada and lost over 10,000 men and several ten thousand horses."

From the Hanshou:

Xiangyu's victory at JuLu and Liu Bang's defeat at PengCheng (huge important battles) here's all the description they gave: Xiang Yu won by attacking them and routing their army. Xiangyu attacked the allies with 30,000 light troops and killed over 100,000.

So the story about such a vivid description of such a minor battle by the Yuan Shi is completely bollocks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asteriset (talkcontribs) 12:32, 25 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Peking Man

My apologies if my excision was wrongfully executed. I was under the impression that the excised information in the Peking Man article was an example of Polygenism, a discredited theory. The quote in question was this:

  • Peking Man (Chinese: 北京猿人; pinyin: Běijīng Yuánrén), Homo erectus pekinensis, is an East Asian subspecies of Homo erectus that evolved into modern Han Chinese and possibly a few other East Asian ethnic groups.

I was also under the impression that the supporting links provided were incorrectly applied, though admittedly I was going off what I read at the bottom of the article's Talk Page.

I won't be editing the matter further, I'll leave it in your hands. Do review the information though, just in case. Thank you. 24.50.238.234 (talk) 20:23, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge article ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Bridge ) includes the sentence "Construction of the bridge began in 1869.[12] The bridge was designed by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling, who had previously designed and constructed shorter suspension bridges, such as Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, the Waco Suspension Bridge[17] and the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky "

I just read The Great Bridge by David McCullough. I was surprised to see no reference to the Waco Suspension Bridge in the text or index, since I had a vague memory of Roebling having something to do with the Waco bridge. In above sentence, I clicked on Waco Suspension Bridge and got to the article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waco_Suspension_Bridge . That page attributes the building of the Waco bridge to Thomas M. Griffith, not John Roebling. That page does say that the wire for the cables came from Roebling's Sons company in Trenton, NJ, at the time a leading wire manufacturer.

I think that the reference to the Waco bridge in the Brooklyn Bridge article should be deleted.

This is my first time doing anything with Wikipedia but reading it. I struggled with how to express my opinion that the article should be edited, and finally made the change you noted. If you have more information on Roebling's personal involvement in the Waco bridge, please let me know.

Cwchapoton (talk) 20:57, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how to end this.Cwchapoton (talk) 20:57, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just did an Internet search for "John Augustus Roebling" and got a bunch of biographical articles. The word "Waco" does not appear in any of them. Based on that and no mention of the Waco bridge in McCullough's book, I believe that the statement in the Wikipedia article asserting that he designed that bridge should be removed.

Cwchapoton (talk) 21:08, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Cwchapoton:, I do see your point, and I have moved this discussion to Talk:Brooklyn_Bridge where we hopefully can get other users opinions in this issue. Im sure it should be possible to get soe consensus for your suggested removal of that section. Dan Koehl (talk) 21:16, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help would be appreciated : North Korea article

Peace Treaty with North Korea
Please advise me your opinion or update article for the subject above when you have time. There is a request of feedback on the article on 26 Aug 2017 at 17:56pm

  • From my understanding, User:Cianmarbo has been created recently and there was no contribution on wikipedia except for the trial of the potential vandalism.

(I don't know whether User:Cianmarbo might against diplomatic attempt- to the Peace Treaty with North Korea because of Cianmarbo's own circumstance, but it is unreasonable - the fault-finding statement from the User:Cianmarbo )

  • My opposed points about the criticism from the User:Cianmarbo:

1) There are no international diplomatic attempt (?) : it is fact and there are enough evidence from USA, China, South Korea and North Korea - it is stated on the several news articles and attached on the Wikipedia 2) The article seems to be based on ones own personal view and there are no diplomatic level (?): it is misleading statement for Wikipedians: Again - there are clear evidence of more than hundred news articles about Peace Treaty political attempt and it is easily searchable via google. 3) A poor standard of English (?): It is subjective idea, and the personal thought should not the reason of the removal of wikipedia article.

  • A suggestion below might be the proper way

" This article is in a list format that may be better presented using prose."

Brooklyn Bridge

I have done some more rooting around the Internet, looking for stuff about the Waco Suspension Bridge. I found several articles that pointed to Thomas M. Griffith a civil engineer in New York as the designer and constructor of the Waco Suspension Bridge. Some of the references cite Griffith as a Roebling employee. In particular:

See http://www.kossecafe.com/txhistory4.html . "Civil engineer Thomas M. Griffith, a Roebling employee who had worked with similar bridges, was the actual designer and construction supervisor of the Waco bridge."

See https://www.theclio.com/web/entry?id=17087 "The Waco Bridge Project and its president, John T. Flint, hired Thomas M. Griffith of New York to be the project’s civil engineer, and Flint also commissioned cables and steelwork from John A. Roebling and Son from New York, a firm that would eventually build the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883."

See http://historicbridges.org/bridges/browser/?bridgebrowser=texas/waco/ "Col. John T. Flint, President of the Waco Bridge Company, went to New York and contacted the John A. Roebling Company (the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883). The engineer Thomas M. Griffith was sent to Waco to design the bridge."

None of the stuff that I have found hints that John A. Roebling was the designer of the bridge as stated in the Wiki Brooklyn Bridge article.

As an aside, I note that finding the information I got in less than an hour on the Internet would have taken an inordinate amount of time in the olden days before the World Wide Web. It's astounding how much can be discovered in a modest amount of time.

BTW, I live in the Dallas area, and my three children live in and around Austin. I have made at least one drive a year to Austin on Interstate 35, going through Waco, for more than thirty years. I have never diverted to see the bridge, although I have long known that a historic bridge crossed the Brazos River in Waco. Next trip down to the Austin area, I'll pull over and walk across it(nowadays, pedestrian traffic only).

Redo Move for Peace Treaty with North Korea

Thank you for moving the page to make it a draft page. It is clearly not ready for prime time. Unfortunately someone reverted that move and there have been subsequent edits. I tried redoing the move but was stymied by the fact that the new page already exists, plus someone has created a new talk page that now needs to be reconciled. So I'm unsure how to undo these multiple steps and thought I'd ask you, a more experienced editor, to try again. Thanks! NPguy (talk) 16:37, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thanks for the message. However, I did explain why I removed that content in the edit summary:

Removed apocryphal story about a gate in Jerusalem. See: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_a_needle#Christianity

I removed it again. I've been to the gate and the story is false.

Thanks for your efforts to combat vandalism.

I have undone this revert, because I could not see any good reason for it, and your edit summary gave no indication at all for your reason. If you think you do have a good reason then please explain that reason. Using an automated tool such as Huggle does not reduce the obligation on you to carefully check every edit you revert to make sure it really should be reverted, nor the obligation on you to explain the reasons for your edits. Yes @Drmies:, and did you see that the two admins from SvWiki, who just edits some 10 political files on EnWiki edit the same political files ? What a coincidence, isnt it, that two Swedish admins have such a narrow interest on the EnWiki so they edit the same files? Would you say thatits possible that they sometimes communicate, and cooperate in political issues like articles about political parties?

Swedish admin nr 1 and Swedish admin nr 2, can there be any possibility for a connection to the wellknown accusations that SvWiki is left-wing POV managed? New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Dan Koehl, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found

HERE
.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
