List of Museums in NY
Thanks for adding and correcting the regions listing for the museums in NY! It's a big help and makes the list more usable. Jllm06 (talk) 16:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Upstate New York
Hey- I'm a native 4th generation Central New Yorker (Liverpool, NY all my life) and most of the people I know pronounce coneys as coneys. There are a few people I know who pronounce it cooneys, but it is by no means the only pronunciation- nor, from my experience, the majority pronunciation (I'd say roughly 3/4 of the people I know say coney and the other 1/4 say cooney). I think either pronunciation is generally accepted (although sometimes debated at barbecues) and to simply say "pronounced cooneys" is not accurate whatsoever as it basically comes down to personal preference. I would therefore like to see the Upstate New York article say "sometimes pronounced cooney" or "pronounced by some as cooney" to be more factual and reflect the actual truth of the situation.
- Hey- thanks for writing. I too grew up in Liverpool, and when as an adult I lived on the North Side of Syracuse I was the sixth generation of my family to do so. Among people I know in CNY, the pronunciation depends on where one was raised; if one moved to the area from away, that person would probably say "cone-ee" (incorrectly in my view), but natives say "cooney." Now you go and shoot that theory down!
- I have put the question to both Heid's and Hoffman Sausages. We'll see what they have to say.
- Cheers,
- Don
- Hi Don, Born and raised in Syracuse (2nd generation) and the word was always cone-ee. I could never figure Syracuse out though because half the people have one accent, and the other half have a completely different accent. Kind of the Saracuse crowd versus the Siracuse crowd! Hi, Don, thanks for your note. Those upstate towns are interesting places. You asked a good question, but I didn't check all the linked pages - just knew that WIKI style is to have just brief info on lists of people like that. All the content is there on the Pompey history page if others want to check it against each of the linked articles on the people. The Sweet brothers seemed quite outstanding and may deserve an article on the family as a whole; maybe they're notable in the area with all three of them. I've seen a few others like that.Parkwells (talk) 16:16, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Upstate New York Legends and Hoaxes
Yes, I agree, but I took it out only to clean up the article. A short list of
]The four mentioned constitute such a short list of the most notable, IMO. I took a look at "Weird New York;" i dunno - it doesn't seem authoritative to me (no citations there). I'll look for other outside citations for the four items. Thanks again for your rescue work on this article. Don Argus jr (talk) 17:44, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yea, a separate article on the politics is good. I recently heard a great story (no cite): Senator X from Queens calls ]
- Sheesh! I'd love to collect citations for these stories. Don Argus jr (talk) 22:20, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

re Physicians and Scientists of Upstate New York
Hello Don Argus and thank you for your contribution. I do have some questions about this article. Where did this list come from? What is the definition of "Upstate New York"? Would this list not be very large if completed? Herostratus (talk) 14:41, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. If its a spinoff from another article, that's OK with me; I was concerned that you had just made it up. I don't have an opinion on list vs. category. I think for large entities its maybe a good idea to have both. In any case, your list gives considerable info on many entries that a category could not give, so its fine as a list. Cheers, and thanks again for your contributions! PS: Don't forget to sign your talk page posts with four tildes (~~~~) Herostratus (talk) 04:40, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
NYS Museum listing suggestion
DIRT (Drivers Independent Race Tracks) Hall of Fame and Classic Car Museum - Thanks for the listing, I added it as the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame & Classic Car Museum. It seems to have different names and is difficult to pin down visiting information.Jllm06 (talk) 14:27, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for this question. I was unwisely repeating a claim made in the wikipedia article about the story, not knowing that it isn't universally accepted. I have removed the claim from the "Hoaxes and Legends" page. Don Argus jr (talk) 15:46, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions |
