El-kanemi Memorial Foundation

The El-Kanemi Memorial Foundation (EMF) was founded by 14 El-kanemi Royal Children in cooperation of their 4 El-kanemi Royal Fathers viz: The Shehu of Borno, The Shehu of Dikwa, The Shehu of Bama and the Emir of Damaturu.

The Foundation was established to foster the legacy of leadership and good royalty bequeathed by first Shehu of El-kanemi, late Shehu Muhammad Al-amin El-kanemi for the human and traditional development of northeast Nigeria. The Foundation is a hybrid grant making, grant receiving, not-for-profit and is non-governmental organisation, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Its office is located in Shehu Laminu way Maiduguri, capital of the Borno State in the Northeastern geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

The El-kanemi Memorial Foundation is conceived to be an intervention agency that will conceptualise and execute programmes directly, partnering with other non-profit organisations or collaborating with special interests that share the same or similar objectives with it in realizing their set goals and objectives which should be within the general framework for economic, cultural and human development. El-kanemi Memorial Foundation also considers an integral part of an emergency response. Which include: Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Psychosocial Support (PSS) to help individuals and communities to heal the psychosocial trauma and rebuilt social structures after an emergency or a critical event. It can help change people into active survivors rather than passive victims. Presently, EMF is surveying CPM child protection management in the Northeast.

Objectives 1. To carry out research on the life and legacies of the late Shehu Muhammad Al-amin El-kanemi of Kanem and the ancestor to the present Shehus of El-Kanemi, particularly in the areas of values in service, leadership, development strategies, education, religious and ethnic tolerance, transparency and accountability towards immortalizing the late icon. 2. To conduct studies and research on how the legacies of the late Shehu Muhammad Al-amin can be inculcated in the present youth and for generations yet unborn. 3. To promote and protect Children in order to live in a sustainable live. 4. To raise money for the purpose of pursuing the aims and objectives of the Foundation. 5. To organize seminars, conferences, workshops, and other capacity building programmes in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the Foundation. 6. To seek and encourage support for the Foundation in any way necessary. 7. To develop and maintain communication and collaboration with all persons, national and international agencies and bodies that have similar interests, aims and objectives as the Foundation. 8. To encourage and facilitate the provision of voluntary services by professionals, communities and associations. 9. To promote the ideals of development and peaceful coexistence practiced by Shehu Muhammad El-kanemi through:

Strengthening of bonds of mutual understanding;
The promotion of good governance;
Lending support to conflict management and resolution;

10. To help alleviate poverty by:

Promoting skills acquisition and development for the youth and women;
Promoting youth and women economic empowerment;
Promoting child welfare and preventing maternal health challenges
Providing needy communities with basic amenities;
Improving access to quality health services by the generality of the people in Northeast Nigeria

11. To help address the question of environmental sanity and sustainability by:

Conducting or commissioning research and publishing the results of such research in this area;
Promoting a safe and healthy environment;

12. To develop a permanent institutional capacity for the attainment of the aims and objectives of the Foundation.

Mission Through evidence-based research to promote progammes that shall improve the competitiveness of Northeast Nigeria and thereby positively affect its development and contribute to national development.

Vision To be the leading agency that makes Northeast Nigeria and the entire Country: economically competitive; politically and religiously stable and peaceful; environmentally clean and protected; people of Northeast and Nigeria healthy, hardworking, educated and empowered; the Governments of Northeast Nigeria and Nigeria accountable and service-driven.
