College Baseball Project

Hello, I noticed that you have edited a College baseball related article. You may be interested to know that there is a college baseball WikiProject which you can join if you like. We would love to have you!

College Ball

John, I sincerely meant that I respect your intentions as being in the best interest of the project. Clearly ORG does not speak to this; however, there have been attempts there to define the notabiltiy of sports teams, and in each case support has not been adequate. It seems like any attempts end up being too subjective or laboriously detailed, and if you try to cover US college football, then you open the door to basketball, baseball, then professional and then European sports; then comptetitive bowling, knitting, and pie eating etc. A little tongue in cheek, but where would it stop. I don't know anymore. Cheers! --Kevin Murray 00:27, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Kevin, thanks for your note. Please don't worry, I understand your motives. You are right in a way, all these guidelines can lead to a slippery slope situation - but that can work in reverse too. We could just as easily say that we shouldn't have a general guideline on organizations (WP:ORG) because it could lead to someone wanting a guideline on college football!
    • Now you are really talking my language. --Kevin Murray 05:13, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It would be fine with me if we just had one guideline - something like: "ANY topic is notable enough for an article if the topic is the subject of multiple non-trivial works." Until we agree on something that simple then instruction creep is a possibility.
I would like though to respond to your tongue in cheek example of guidelines for bowling tournaments, knitting tournaments, etc. One answer to this type of question is to say that if/when those activities get popular enough for an active wikiproject, then it would be appropriate for that wikiproject to come up with notability guidelines.
You may be right that it may be difficult to get agreement on a guideline such as this, but I see no reason why it should be impossible. The alternative is to have these debates one-by-one at AfD. That wastes everyone's time not only in the debate, but also in creating the article if it ends up being deleted. For that reason, it is far better to try to get a guideline in place so that deletion questions can be settled more quickly. Thanks again for your note. Johntex\talk 00:37, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edits on Texas Longhorns

I wanted to call your attention to this section of the Texas Longhorns talk page and ask for your input. Perhaps I'm misguided, but I just don't see it as necessary to delete the sentence reading: "Other former Longhorn greats include: Hub Bechtol, Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Bud McFadin, James Saxton, Johnny Treadwell, Scott Appleton, Tommy Nobis, Jerry Sisemore, Roosevelt Leaks, Bill Wyman, Brad Shearer, Russell Erxleben, Johnnie Johnson, Steve McMichael, Kenneth Sims, Tony Degrate, Doug English, Jerry Gray, Eric Metcalf, Tony Brackens, Priest Holmes, Dan Neil, Casey Hampton, Quentin Jammer, Nathan Vasher, Roy Williams, Derrick Johnson, Cedric Benson, Michael Huff, Justin Blalock, and Vince Young."

I'm not well-versed enough in Wikipedia conventions to defend the sentence against a POV charge, however. Perhaps you agree with Corpx that it should be deleted. Or perhaps you think it could be defended and retained. I'd be interested in reading your input on the matter, in any case. Thanks. ~ João Do Rio 06:07, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I JUST POSTED AND I'M POSTING AGAIN

I would just like to say I don't know and don't care what kind of user you are but don't delete people's edits when they were from sources such as "Washington Post".

I listened to every minutes of of John Roberts' confirmation hearings many times and every reviews of the hearings I could possibly find online. I care about this guy more than you do.

I made all the edits and all you do is "undo" and come back to me talking about being respectful. I think you just don't have any talking points. And if all you want to do is post something you previously posted to other people to me, then save it.

I talk to you because I care about if people get accurate info about John Roberts, not because I enjoy talking to you. Get it right!— Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.78.84.126 (talkcontribs) 07:19, 2007 July 31

  • Hello, I reverted your latest change to John Roberts for two reasons:
  1. You removed sourced information about what Dr. Marc Schlosberg said about epilepsy and this case.
  2. The reference you provided for the material you introduced about epilepsy was (a) incorrectly formatted and more importantly (b) was a bad link. Therefore, the information you added could not be verified.

Again, you should also treat your editors with more respect. ALL CAPITAL HEADINGS ARE NOT RESPECTFUL.

Also, you are wrong on the facts, you state "I made all the edits and all you do is "undo" and come back to me talking about being respectful." If you go back to the history of the article, you will see that yesterday there was one sentence about the seizure. I came along and added 4 paragraphs, correctly sourced from multiple verifiable, reliable sources. You have yet to correctly place a single source into the article.

Finally, I urge you to consider taking a step back. You are clearly quite close to the topic since you say, "I listened to every minutes of of John Roberts' confirmation hearings many times and every reviews of the hearings I could possibly find online. I care about this guy more than you do." You may be too emotional about this topic to edit it objectively and cooperatively right now.

Please note that

Whitman

Houston, Ramirez, Whitman Hello, I reverted some, but not all of the changes you have made today. My reasons are:

Ramirez - I don't think our sources support the claim that every one of Ramirez' shots missed Whitman. Whitman - "spoke briefly" and "exchanged hellos" are very similar. I see no reason or evidence to make a switch. Houston - I restored the external links but left in your wording changes about the award. If you feel the reverted items are important, perhaps you could provide a little more info or explanation so that I can better understand why these changes might be improvements? Johntex\talk 23:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

If you think, then you don't know with certainty. Check the resources. Spoke briefly could mean about any subject. Exchanged hello's is specific. Is the article only subject to your standards; as your request suggests? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.115.166.54 (talkcontribs) 14:26, 2007 August 1

  • I'm allowing for the possibility I might be mistaken, but unless you provide some evidence that the article should be changed, I conclude that these stable articles were better before you started changing them. As WikiProject Philmont Scout Ranch seems to have been inactive since the turn of the year, I propose making it a taskforce of Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, similar to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting task force. That will ensure it won't get deleted (the WP:Council has been cleaning out inactive projects in recent months) and it will standardize that project with our existing MoS and membership base. Re: Great Photo

Hi Johntex. Yes that photo was from the A&M games last year. I realized later on that my photos were dated wrong and have since corrected my future pictures.

I am heading back for my last semester this fall and will try to get more pictures of the campus. I thought of at least adding some sections on the Campbell-Moses Trophy Room, the Silver Spurs Memorial, and the statues of Royal and Campbell for the DKR page kinda in the same way that stadium features are presented on the Kyle Field page. There's some info on the football webpage, but wasn't going to start on it until I had at least some pictures to add.

Anyway, thanks for all of the site editing and noticing the little things.

Congratulations on nearing the end of school, I hope your last semester goes realyl well . Is the Silver Spurs Memorial the new facility that includes the museum on Bevo? I'm really looking forward to visiting that. I hope to make it to a few of the games this year and I'll take as many pictures as I can.
I just added your photo to

Hi again. I went to the Arkansas State game and took some nice pictures that could be used in a variety of sites:

You should be the one to use these pictures for the sites and manipulate them as you wish. You are far better at this than I am.

I plan on going to more games, bringing my camera along. If you need better shots, don't hesitate to write back. Thanks for making UT look so nice on Wikipedia. It already looks a lot better than the A&M sites.

Jevan Snead

Johntex. If you are going to edit Jevan Snead's page then get the information correct. Check when he decommitted from Florida and committed to Texas and then check when Tim Tebow committed to Florida. Tebow's committment to UF was after Snead's committment to UT.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mjcatc (talkcontribs) 15:44, 2007 August 7

  1. Hello Mjcatc, welcome to Wikipedia.
  2. If you are going to edit Wikipedia, please be courteous. It may not be your intent, but saying things like "If you are going to edit Jevan Snead's page then get the information correct." sounds rather condescending.
  3. The information in the article matches what is reported in the source.
  4. If you think the information needs to be changed, then you can't just change the wording and leave the source in place. That gives a false information about that the source is saying.
  5. In order to change the information, you need to find a source to back you up. Please see
    WP:RS
. Wikipedia does not operate on your-say so.

Longhorn article nominations

Hi Johntex,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you more quickly; I've been very busy and have only managed a few minutes here and there on Wikipedia in the last couple of weeks. Also, I don't know if the protocol is for me to respond to your messages here or on my own talk page, but I'll do it here until you tell me otherwise, just to be sure you see the replies.

I'm still quite busy, but I'll do my best to see if I can offer any helpful suggestions on the articles you're nominating in the next few days. As for the 2007 offense, I suppose the generalized term "spread" is appropriate, though there are so many spread variants that the terms is unfortunately almost non-descriptive. Our base formation will be a "three-WR single-back shotgun spread," but I think that's too wordy. "Shotgun spread" is probably the best compromise between the general and the specific.

Feel free to ask me any other questions, and I'll try to help more as my time permits. Good luck, too. You've done some terrific work on these articles. ~ João Do Rio 03:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi João, thanks for the reply. Please don't worry about the timing at all. It has been less than a week, sometimes it takes me much longer than that to reply.
Concerning replies, most people reply at the other person's Talk page. I think that is best because then the recipient gets that orange box to let them know they have a message. And we all love orange, right! Some people like to keep the conversation all in one place, but as a general rule those people will make that as a request at the top of their talk page. Sometimes I just put a copy in both places because disk space is cheap.
Thanks for the kind words about the UT articles. I feel like we have done some good work, but we are losing ground to A&M (now with at least 2 FAs) and OU (nearly there, last I checked).
While there is always room for improvement, I think the
2007 Texas Longhorn football team
easily meets GA standards in terms of quality. The only question is philosophical/procedural. It may fail on the basis of the season not being over. Opinions seem to be split on this, so it will really depend on the luck of the draw in terms of who decides to review the article. My personal opinion is that the GA standard is less rigorous and a topic like this should qualify. For FA I would agree that the season would need to be complete.
The
2005 Texas Longhorn football team
is harder. I'm still slugging through it to try to get it to FA quality. Every time I come back to it, I notice ways to improve it. It is very difficult to comply with all the guidelines of the Manual of Style. For instance: to find every instance of a missing "non-breaking space" ( ), check every reference format, etc.
I hope to get there in a few more days. If we get it into top form and nominate it by mid-August then there is a chance of it passing FA before the football season starts, which would be cool. Johntex\talk 04:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Johntex,
I'm sorry I haven't been able to give you any feedback at all to this point. I've been much busier than I imagined I'd be, and I've probably spent ten minutes on Wikipedia in the last two weeks. Unfortunately, that isn't going to change too much for a little while. I'll try to find some time to give the article a careful reading in the next couple of days.
P.S. I don't know what the message below this one is about, but it's not from me. I'm not sure why its author put it under this heading. ~ João Do Rio 17:28, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Johntex,

I don't need to be lectured about wikipedia etiquette or whether or not I come off as condesending. What I do what to do is make sure that the information that is in here about a personal friend of mine is accurate. Apparently you are the keeper of the Longhorn pages and that is fine. Since you apparently take great pride in the information being presented as factual I would have thought that you would wanted the information to actually be factual. I did a Google search for "Tim Tebow Florida commitment" and the first article that I found was this one

[1]

If you'll notice the last paragraph of that article it says

Tebow is Florida's 21st high school commitment for the class of 2006. In November, Florida lost QB Jevan Snead when he de-committed and verbally committed to Texas.

If you don't want accurate information then please tell me and I'll stop putting the truth.

Hi Johntex. Remember this discussion? Recently I got tired of the White House pic of Vince Young, so I finally asked the photographer if she could switch the license. She changed the license to CC-by-SA and so I uploaded a cropped version of the pic to the Commons. I changed the contrast of it as well (maybe a bit too much). Anyhow, hope you like it. BlueAg09 (Talk) 08:28, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sweet!!! Thank you very much. It is great to be able to get someone to switch the license like that. Great work. Johntex\talk 15:31, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • No problem. By the way, I'm hearing 12-7 is a total fluke and y'all are ready to kick our asses this November 23rd (which will come by real fast) to prove yourself. Either way, I'll be there to witness the event. It's going to be a big game this time, and I'm sure both sides can agree to that. Not sure if you're going to make it, but I'll be taking pictures too ;) BlueAg09 (Talk) 18:54, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would not say that the 2006 game was a fluke, exactly. Texas was predicted to win, certainly, but A&M had a good team, also. McGee in particular is a great player. Throw in the rivalry and the emotion and the chance to beat the reigning national champions and I expected that the Aggies would step up to the challenge.
Of course, it helped that Colt was still hurting from the injury sustained against Kansas. I don't say that as any type of excuse to justify our loss. If Texas doesn't have a back-up ready to step in and play at the same level then that is shame on us and we have to take the consequences.
As to this year, on paper, the Longhorns seem to be the better team. We'll also be looking to "erase" last year's defeat and hopefully we will still be highly ranked and needing to win at College Station to keep our championship hopes growing. However, you hold the home field advantage for this year and that means a lot. I never want to get over-confident going into Kyle Field.
I don't suppose you happen to be trying to get rid of a ticket or two for the game? :-) Johntex\talk 19:17, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll keep a lookout for tickets. It might be difficult to find one, but there are usually people who back out at the last minute. Is the student section okay with you? We're also going to have our Traditions_of_Texas_A&M_University#Maroon_Out Maroon Out that day. (I'll add that to the 2007 season page) I'll give you a heads up if at all I find people giving away tickets. BlueAg09 (Talk) 19:28, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, well if you want anything like that happening, you'd be better off wearing maroon. Least you can get is a "side hug" every time we sing the War Hymn. But who knows... maybe A&M will perform so well and fans will start getting crazy. That always happens. By the way, our "fat back" lost a few pounds. He might be running a bit faster now :) BlueAg09 (Talk) 20:04, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you really think this needs a separate article? I suggest that info on there be merged into

freely use this picture with the fountain and the tower. It must carry the Non-free 3D art tag and can only be fairly used on Coppini's article. Therefore, the picture must be removed from the UT WikiProject talk page template and be replaced by this tower image, or this one, with the tower cropped out. The 3D art rule doesnt apply to public buildings, of course, as this is covered by freedom of panorama. No worries. I understand your pain in so many ways... BQZip01 talk 05:32, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay. I have been at the hospital with my wife and new son! — BQZip01 — talk 21:16, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, no wifi in the hospital. I'm actually back at the house watching my son while my mother-in-law stays with my wife tonight (God bless her. It's one thing to have something done to you. It's quite another to be subjected to just about everything (wakeups, meals, lack of sleep) plus helping her with everything and getting none of the benefits (sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, etc.). :-) Wikipdia is a nice break from that. — BQZip01 — talk 02:45, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's EXACTLY the kind of summary I'm looking for! Perfect! (Aggies don't often say that about the work of longhorns...) :-) — BQZip01 — talk 17:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. We are getting very close. I stand by my assertion that this article is CLEARLY well-referenced and should be given the time to make the appropriate changes. Right now, my wife and new little one are going to be discharged from the hospital later today and I am dealing with moving plans/issues with the Air Force (I move sometime in the next month), so getting to it today will be a challenge, but I'll see what I can do (perhaps late at night for a feeding or something?). I personally view FAs as something that should be confrontational to an extent and I also feel too many are being let through with serious technical problems and do not meet FA requirements. So, any article I review gets my full attention and a full review of as many things I can find. Articles I support get through 100% of the time and are of a FAR more quality (on average) than other FAs. Good luck on those and I'll tackle them later tonight. — BQZip01 — talk 17:57, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Did I just hear a longhorn say "sooner"!?!? yeah, no worries. We'll get this one fixed up eventually and I think Raul will understand. — BQZip01 — talk 21:10, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thank you!

Thank you so much for the barnstar! I wish I was done, but I'm not, and I may have to email the Athletic Department to find some content they seem to have lost or removed. Although I'd like to forget the 2005 OU-Texas game, it happened, so find the stats I shall. And while I don't do much RC patrol, having forsaken it for patrolling AIV and actually blocking the vandals, I'll still watch Texas Tech University on Friday nights. You were my first barnstar (as BaseballBaby), and now you're my most recent! Thanks again – KrakatoaKatie 17:30, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need Response

Can you clarify your position at Talk:Texas_Longhorns#CLC that the CLC ranking should be removed from the lead? Corpx 15:36, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reminding me. I was away for the whole weekend and I came back to see the wide range of AfDs. I think there's room on Wikipedia for these articles, as long as they can be written well and are notable (which even minor bowl games should be able to pull off). --Bobak 18:37, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
