The more I think about it, answers to questions won't be a bad idea in most cases. We're going for critical commentary and so some questions should be somewhat open, but more factual ones can be answered. We really want the reader to think since the Guide is about analysis and commentary and not facts. I can't stress enough that we stay away from Wikipedia-style articles since the Guide cannot work like a macropedia. A lot of lengthy discussion, like of the VfD type, has been devoted towards making sure the Guide is not like an encyclopedia. If you dislike that Wikipedia dump, then remove it or edit it down. Most of my time is spent enforcing standards and styles so I don't work on content as much. I haven't read through the piece but if it's bad, cut it out if you like. You're doing excellent work so far. Remember to keep a lot of professionalism in your writing since we want this to be like a Cliff's Notes for HP. Thanks! -Matt 21:24, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see what you mean regarding the article. Also be careful with including original research on Wikibooks as well. We don't want to get too off the wall. Could you re-link me to the text? I'll go through it and see what I can do with it. Also, a very large VfD discussion for the Guide occurred about a year ago here. The book should not have been listed to begin, but many of its issues are covered there. The book is not meant for describing fun little facts about characters and places and is not really interested in fan-like trivia. A minimal amount of descriptive information should be included in the overview sections, and that is just the minimum needed for the other sections to flow properly. The analysis and interaction sections of pages are where the book's purpose really is. See the project standards section to get a better feel on some of the sections. The Guide cannot look like a macropedia. We want analysis, not long lists of facts. Wikipedia and other sites can cover fact lists. We want a professional analysis tool. Cliff's Notes are guides to literary works such as Shakespearean plays and complex novels. The Guide is meant to be like Cliff's Notes, a literary tool. -Matt 14:07, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hallowe'en

I understand your thoughts about Hallowe'en versus Halloween. However: The edition of the books that I have, and that I am working from, is the Canadian / British edition, and in that edition, chapter 10 of the Philosopher's Stone is entitled "Hallowe'en" with the apostrophe, and that usage is the same throughout the book. I do not know if the same is true of chapter 10 of The Sorcerer's Stone (which would be the US edition). -- Wikibooks Chazz

I can't see any mention of Hallowe[']en in HP6 -- it seems to jump straight from the Quidditch match in Felix Felicis, which appears to be late October, to mid-November, without stopping. -- Wikibooks Chazz

Chapter analysis

I'll grant you that some of the stuff that I deleted is not found immediately anywhere else -- but Hogwarts having four houses is in the Sorting Hat chapter, and the characteristics of the four houses are, or should be, linked from there. Granted, that makes for additional clicking, so I will be putting some of that stuff back in as I re-visit the chapters in question, today or tomorrow.

My understanding is that Matt sees the Half-Blood Prince book as the skeleton to follow, and that has no analysis on the book page. Basically, that's what I'm aiming for as well. -- Wikibooks Chazz

You are very welcome. But that one was very quick... just a matter of having two screens and a good mouse. WithinFocus says he'll change the chapters to their names throughout when he gets time; I'm too lazy to think that's a good idea, I have always preferred the idea of typing "Chapter_14" to "Norbert_the_Norwegian_Ridgeback"... but even so I can see that it makes more sense in an interWiki way. Is there a reason why you restored a vandalizing user's random dump of text on my usertalk page on Wikibooks? The vandal received repeated requests to stop what he was doing and has now been blocked from Wikibooks for two weeks. Blanking a Sandbox page is considered routine procedure and the action was made after the user ceased his edits on the site. Good work dealing with a lot of the poor-quality edits that come into the Muggles' Guide. Certain users come along and add such terrible content additions sometimes, and I've seen that you've recently seen a new user's edits and cleaned them up to standards. I'm busy doing that most of the time and so I don't add new content as much, so now that other intelligent people are on-board we can distribute the load. I see you changed the Gibraltar currency to GIP

Although there is an ISO code allocated to Gibraltar, in practice the currency is the Pound Sterling. You cannot actually buy GIP, there are no notes or coins issued in it, the ones in circulation are marked 'Pound Sterling'

At one time Barclays bank maintained a myth about coverting 'Gibraltar pounds' to sterling and were forced to repay the commission charged as it was a scam.

Your edit regarding FIFA is interesting, but does not seem to display correctly.

Avoiding redirects is not necessarily a good thing

In view of your recent edits regarding the generalized continuum hypothesis, I would like to bring to your attention the following Wikipedia:Redirect#Don't fix links to redirects that aren't broken. Not only did you waste system resources, but you made it more difficult for future editors, if and when someone creates an article "Generalized continuum hypothesis" which is separate from the existing "Continuum hypothesis" article. I changed the redirect itself to point to that section, which is what you should have done. But changing the various links in the articles back would probably cost too much to justify it. Muggles' guide: map of the school locations

Just to let you know, I am asking for some feedback on the Muggle's Guide, basically on the return of the map of the possible locations of the 3 wizarding schools in Europe (it was deleted from the common). The link [2] describes my thoughts, and opens the discussion.

What made me look for it was that in yesterday's revision, the Reference section contained at #5: "^ Cite Error: Invalid <ref> tag; no text was provided for refs named thefreelibrary1."
