Image deletion

Hi Lamontcg, Welcome to Wikipedia. I have reverted your deletion of the image of a DIR diver. This is not because I think it is a good image, but your reasons given are insufficient justification. It is considered good form to tag an item that you feel should be deleted or changed and explain your reasons first, particularly on contentious issues, and almost anything to do with DIR is somewhat contentious. Arbitrary deletions tend to lead to edit wars, which are massively counterproductive. You express the opinion that the image is a joke. This is on the face of it a personal point of view. We strive for a

neutral or at least balanced point of view. If you flag the image for removal as a joke, you are expected to explain on the discussion page why this is the case. A more acceptable direct action is to replace an image with a better image. This is often acceptable without further explanation. As it happens, I think it is a poor picture to illustrate the subject in the lead paragraph (though probably not intended as a joke), and would like to see it replaced by a better one, but I dont have a better one to substitute. The diver in question is touching the environment, which is *highly* frowned upon. There's situations where its okay to do that, or necessary to do that -- such as pull and glide in a cave system with flow, or finger walking through a restriction where fin propulsion would damage the environment worse. In general, however, the point of learning propulsion mechanisms is to not need to touch the environment. A diver with sufficient propulsion skill should be able to do an entire dive without needing to stabilize on anything, and should be able to utilize helicopter turns and back-kicks to avoid running into the environment. For that reason, its kind of a joke. That diver isn't even a fundamental diver. The LP inflator is also pointed the incorrect way, and I can also probably determine other gear problems in that picture as well. Lamontcg (talk) 23:29, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Lamont. Fair comment, if you consider those to be sufficient reasons why the photo is innapropriate representation of a DIR diver, list them as your reason for removal in the edit summary, or on the talk page before removing it and wait a while in case anyone objects (two weeks is probably sufficient if there are no comments, less if there is support). If you do it that way, it is unlikely that anyone will object. (I will not object to those reasons, though I would encourage you to supply a substitute). Welcome to Wiki!

Lamont, good to see you on board (I post as Rhone Man on SB)! If you need any help navigating the waters (re images / deletion policies) etc., feel free to leave a message on my talk page or PM me on SB. It would be great to have more experienced divers for WP:SCUBA, but I am sure if you get into it, they would also value your input on a few of the finance projects as well.

Just a quick suggestion - big rewrite projects like Doing It Right can get frustrating. You may just want to comb through some of the other scuba related articles and just chip in and improve on an ad hoc basis where you feel minded.

Glad to have you aboard.

Seconded. It's sometimes slow progress here, and I'm concentrating on sourcing the affirmative sections of the Doing It Right, but it does need a lot of work. You may already know that every article has a history of every edit that's been made to it, so you can look at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Doing_It_Right&action=history to see how the article has progressed (and regressed). The Talk page for the article is quite illuminating as well. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 12:44, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
