A belated welcome to Wikipedia

Hi Mosvold! I noticed your contributions to journals in mathematical education and realised that, although you've been around for a while, no one seems to have officially welcomed you! If you're interested in academic journals, I wonder if you might be interested in joining the relevant project: Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals? Happy editing, Espresso Addict (talk) 01:34, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, Espresso Addict! I have been around for a while, but I haven't really had the opportunity to spend the amount of time and energy that I would have liked on this yet. I have been more active in the Norwegian Wikipedia, and there has been a lot of things at work as well of course :-)
I have recently decided that it would be more valuable for others if I used Wikipedia as a platform for things I have been working on in private already, like the
list of academic journals in mathematics education. I will take a look at the project you mentioned as well. I might be interested in joining that :-) --Mosvold (talk) 09:47, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply

The
list of academic journals in mathematics education is looking really useful. I hope other people more familiar than I am with the subject area chip in to expand it. With subjects of limited popular interest, such as academic journals, I think it's probably easier to get collaboration going in the wider pool of en-wiki, and aim to translate back into one's national wiki later. Thanks! I am going to expand the list myself, I just had to get started somewhere. And I totally agree with your comments about getting collaboration going. I guess one of the reasons I haven't been spending so much time on the Norwegian wiki lately is that I felt somewhat alone... --Mosvold (talk) 16:30, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you put a note about need for citation regarding how prestigious a journal Educational Studies in Mathematics is. In Norway, we have a ranking system for journals, and this journal has had the highest ranking for years (see this link). Would that be a possible reference, or do you know of other more international rankings of journals? --Mosvold (talk) 10:10, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not familiar with the Norwegian ranking system, but it would be better if at all possible to find an international ranking. The WikiProject has usually gone for impact factor and ranking within the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) category. I can't find Educational Studies in Mathematics in their database[1], but I'm not sure how broad their coverage is for mathematics journals. Others in the WikiProject are knowledgeable in this field, so it might well be worth asking on the project talk page.
By the way, there's some useful discussion on what should go into an article on a journal on DGG's talk page here. It used to be linked from the WikiProject's talk page, but seems to have got lost. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:16, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! Always something more to learn I guess :-) I'll check it out. --Mosvold (talk) 16:28, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
