Gaming/MMORPG Discussions

Doesn't the Quest entry already in place deal with RPG quests? Why not just expand that article to explain it more fully? --Habap 23:11, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

REPLY: I don't know the proper way to reply to "User Talk" Comment yet, so I'll just do it here. I believe the gaming term "Quest" is a big enough concept with enough information out there to warrent its own article. I will continue working on it. I would like to break down the different types of quests, how they work, which games have what type of quests etc, and then talk about quest rewards (types) ..and I could go on. I know there is enough out there for it to have its own page. --Nahallac Silverwinds 21:55, 22 Jun 2005 (CST)

This is a good place to reply, since I made my comment here. Sounds good to me if you're able to expand it. --Habap 04:49, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

REPLY: Thanks :)--Nahallac Silverwinds

I see you've also got plans for an article on Gaming Factions. I'm thinking that you either mean

Online Gaming Organizations (multi-game guilds/clans). Perhaps it might make more sense to improve those articles (both need lots of work)? --Habap
15:35, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

REPLY: No, those are not what I'm talking about. Not player factions or guilds that don't like each other. I'm talking about NPC factions that are built into some MMORPGs. For Example, in EverQuest, Coldain (Dwarves) vs. Kromrif/Kromzek (Giants)in Velious, or Claws of Veeshawn vs Velious Dragons. The whole reason I plan to do the article is due to the explantion of some types of quests which use in-game faction that I plan to add to the

Quest (Gaming) article. These types of quests often have you kill a lot of mobs from an opposing faction or run a lot of errands for them, in order to build up trust. You can change some factions from KoS to Allied if you perform enough quests for a particular one. Once you do these faction quests, the NPCs of the now friendly faction will often give you better quests which will yield in-game currency, armor or weapons. I don't know, maybe it just needs to be an extension of the EQ article, but the fact that things like this exist in other games makes me think not. --Nahallac Silverwinds

Ah, ok. Make sure to refer to
Morrowind also, though the Wikipedia entry doesn't mention it. --Habap

REPLY: Thanks for those links! While I've played several MMOs and read about/studied dozens more, the game I'm most familar with (which I'm sure everyone knows by now b/c its the one I keep referencing), is EQ. So I'm hoping that after I get the Faction (Gaming) article started and fill in everything I know and have learned about my games, that others will add info on games I am less familiar with --Nahallac Silverwinds

Deletions

Usually VFD discussions take 5 days after which an administrator may delete the article if there's a consensus. "May" is the key word here. The old VFD discussions are terribly backlogged, a thing administrators are quite aware off, but this is a voluntary project and closing those things is quite a tedious job - especially when the decision is to merge. Eventually someone will get around to it, but don't expect them to take immediate action. If you think the article in question was overlooked (when it's no longer listed on VFD old) let me know the article name and I'll do some hunting. - Mgm|(talk) June 28, 2005 07:18 (UTC)

VfD on
Innate bisexuality

Actually, I think that one's fairly safe at this point. The original VfD was based on the original text (check the article history), which was a dump of what looked like someone's essay, probably a school project or thesis. It was rather hopeless as an encyclopedic entry, so I tried to preseve its spirit, but totally re-wrote it after reading (far too much) Freud and commentary on the topic from various net sources. The article as it stands has recieved a number of keep votes, and I think it will survive. Right now, my concerns are more around The Poppykettle Papers and Schmidlin.

Thanks again for you interest, and good luck with your EverQuest edits! -Harmil 7 July 2005 03:27 (UTC)

Augustan drama links

Thanks for the attention to Augustan drama. It's an article that I continue to hammer on every day, so it's a bit like the Heraklitian river. At any rate, the general practice on links is to link a term upon its first occurrence, but not any subsequent occurrence. I mess that up all the time, as most folks will. Most of the links you added to the article were absolutely spot-on, needed, and very helpful, but a few were terms that I believe had been linked earlier. I didn't know if that was oversight or just a mistake, so, as you're still somewhat new to the project, I thought I'd first thank you for the help and then just make sure you knew why some things had previously been unlinked.

In general, the links in the article were messed up by its having been clipped from a much, much longer article (Augustan literature). When I wrote Augustan literature, I had had a full length discussion of poetry, prose, and drama. The result was an article over 90 Kb long. We then cut out each of the sections to a new article (Augustan poetry, Augustan prose, and Augustan drama) and made their parts of Augustan literature a summary. Therefore, many terms had originally been very late in the article and therefore had been previously linked (when it was part of Augustan literature), and I have missed linking them in my edits. Thus, please feel free to link any other terms you see that need it, as I'm very likely to have missed them. Thanks again. Geogre 03:06, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Castlevania box art images

Thanks! I've edited the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night article in a similar fashion, and will probably end up doing the same for the original Castlevania, although I suspect it'll be harder to find some of the images there, given the obscurity of the some of the ports. Thanks for all your work on the Castlevania articles, BTW: there (somewhat surprisingly) doesn't seem to be a great deal of interest, and a lot of the pages need a fair amount of work. – Seancdaug 04:40, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

Oh its on my watch list. Heh, I just posted today because it had been over a week since I made the requst and no one else had done any editing to the article, nor had they made any comments :P Thanks for your comments on the discussion page, I'm going to try to incorporate all your suggestions :) --Naha|(talk) 20:44, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
So anyway, what's with all the patriotic sentiments on your userpage? I mean, I'd rather be shot than be seen promoting my (dutch) flag on my page. what gives? Jacoplane 00:04, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I modeled my user page after User:MacGyverMagic's page, because I thought it kicked some serious butt. Apparently he feels differently about displaying the Dutch flag than you.... While I don't always agree with some of the things my country's government does, I love the Unitied States and consider myself very fortunate to live here. I've done some extensive traveling (at least for someone my age, I think) and while I love visiting other places, I'm always happy to be back home. And my state, Texas, kicks some serious butt too, hence its flag displayment. I'm sorry you dissaprove. --Naha|(talk) 00:16, July 28, 2005 (UTC)
I don't dissaprove at all. It's just that I find it difficult to have nationalistic sentiments. So I find it interesting when someone does, and I want to understand those sentiments. Then again, I have lived in a lot of different places, so I guess it's understandable. Anyway, I think the US is the greatest place on earth, and I think it's easy for the world to criticize, but you're clearly the most benign superpower the world has ever seen. Even though your govt policies do seem a bit shortsighted sometimes. Anyway, I didn't mean to offend you, I hope that;s clear. Jacoplane 20:15, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not too sure about this, but I removed it anyway, for the time being. --Naha|(talk) 05:12, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What aren't you too sure about? If you can give a fair use rationale you're free to keep it, but I certainly don't see one. --fvw* 05:14, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not too sure about this either. I cannot see any reason's why this cannot be used under fair use. I agree that we should make an effort to keep wikipedia as legal as possible, but we shouldn't become obsessed with copyright compliance. I think a consensus in wikipedia feels current copyright laws are somewhat extreme, and some pressure should be exerted on the government to enable more innovation in this space. It's not like wikipedia would ever get sued because someone's history had an animated gif.. I think Naha should keep the picture, I'll add a fair use rationale tomorrow if it's really necessary. Jacoplane 22:29, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the image was not being misused, plain and simple. Unfortunatly I don't have the luxary of time right now (hence my recent absence from Wikipedia) to build a defense for my use of the image in question (especially because I don't think one is warranted in this case). Thanks Jacoplane :) --Naha|(talk) 01:56, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, all the comments are confusing at times and one of my main gripes with the FAC process is you can't please everyone. Maybe there should be a board of Subject Mattter Experts (SME) for each topic that do this. I'm not sure of the best route right now either. Rebelguys2, whom I really like, says he'll do the major copy edit soon for me (he's better at it than I). He, you, and JohnDBuell have been the biggest helps on the FAC process. Hi, that particular image was deleted because it was copyrighted and uploaded under a

speedy deletion as we only allow copyrighted material as a "last resort" to ilustrate articles, that is why it was not on IFD. Things matching scertain criterea can be deleted "on sight" without any "red tape". All deletions, as well as undeletions, uploads, page protections, blocks and so forth are recorded on Special:Log so go there and paste in the name of the page in question (in the title box) to find out who deleted it, and what reason was given and so on. You can also punch in a username to see all logged actions by that user as well as filter by type of action. Hope that answer your questions. --Sherool (talk) 00:28, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply

Naha, you mentioned at Randy's talk page "there are A LOT of World Scouting articles that seem, incorrectly, BSA-centric that we will have to work on. And there are A LOT of Scouting articles that need a lot of restructuring, formatting and basically an all-around over-haul because their quality is so poor." As I'm one of the more active (virulent?) contributors to those articles, let me address these concerns and ask for your help.
1) BSAcentrism? Can you give some examples (aside from where I have tagged individual countries where BSA and GSUSA units overseas are, note Jergen has added where other countries also have similar deployments)? My hope is as these stubs mature, they will be taken over by local Scouts and given their own particular "flavor".
2) poor quality-I know a lot of the newer articles are stubs to seed articles that will be added to later, but please point out where they are poor. Most of these I wrote from memory and need a fresh eye on. I hate to think they come off written by a retarded orangutan, as so many on the 'pedia do, but rather by someone who loves the subject and has a transplant to worry about and a wedding to plan and is suffering from winter.
3) restructuring and formatting-this I know is a failing, on some of the postSoviet articles-again, I wrote from what I knew, and trusted that others would help out and add. Please do when you see such, and let me know how I can improve.

I hope that on each of these issues, I am not the sole perpetrator, none of these have been my intent. Chris 23:46, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ps-there are several of my Eurasian articles that have been marked for cleanup. I myself am too close to the subject to see what they're wanting, but I want to make them better articles. Can you help me on that? Chris 18:56, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
sure, no problem. By the way, about the stuff mentioned above, I came across 2 or 3 articles a few days ago that I think might have been what I was talking about, and I checked the history on them, and you hadn't edited any of them, so don't worry about that part of it. We just need to make every article we come across as professional as possible ..which will take a lot of time heh :)--Naha|(talk) 21:33, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
