Philip, I have taken the 2012 FINA championship articles off of my watch list, as you and other interested editors seem to have these articles well in hand. If anyone attempts to delete any of these FINA championship articles or nominates any of them for AfD, please let me know immediately.

I am continuing to work on the biographies of U.S. Olympic swim team members. All 700+ Olympic swimmer bios are now properly formatted, including "Infobox swimmer," applicable categories, and links to related "see also" articles. We also have navboxes for all U.S. Olympic swim teams from 1912 to 2012.

My plan is to continue to improve the main body text of these articles while adding footnoted sources (which are sorely lacking in many). Apart from the obvious on-line Olympic databases like Sports-Reference.com, it would be helpful if we could compile a list of all known competitive swimming references on the WikiProject Swimming page, including both on-line and hard-copy references. I recently came across a recent book called the "Encyclopedia of Swimming" (or something like that) and will probably buy a used copy of it on Amazon in the coming weeks. I am sure there are other general Olympic and swimming-specific refs out there. We also need references for the AAU swimming championships, which served as the U.S. national championships until the 1970s, and the NCAA swimming championships. Dirtlawyer, I don't believe there will be any issues with the 2012 FINA Championship articles as most of them are expanded and properly sourced. If there's any attempt in deleting them, I will inform you. All things considered, that whole experience has really dampened my spirits on Wikipedia. However, I'm committed to getting over it and getting back to work. In hindsight, I did overreact to that incident and could of handled it better. I did learn a lot from it though and hope to avoid that in the future. Again, I appreciate and thank you for coming to my defense, but more importantly coming to the articles defense.

As for the articles, I've seen your work in formatting them and I'm following that precedent when I'm creating new athlete bios. Please tell me if there is anything I'm missing. I do agree, there can be better work done in adding references (especially to the older swimmers) in their articles. I find it difficult though to find any online sources for them, so I think a hard-copy reference will be our best bet. When you find the details of that book, could you send me the info? I may also buy it if I like what I see. Now you said you needed references for the AAU swimming championships. Are you talking about results? The USA Swimming site has links for meets as early as 1920. You can go here (http://usaswimming.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=1834&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en) to browse. As for the NCAA meets, I will have to look, but I will tell you if I come across anything. I will keep an eye open though for sources and relay them back to you if I find any.

My next major task to to get Michael Phelps's article to FA status. I have tried before (twice), but failed. However, I was able to get it to GA status. I have school starting in a couple of weeks though, so it will have to be something for the future. I have his books and everything, it's just a matter of me sitting down and committing to it. 1. I've responded to your question/comment on my talk page.
2. Also, at the USA swimming Olympic Trials, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers in the 100 and 200 frees are the second group of qualifiers onto the team, after the 1st place finishers in the event. The second place finishers in all the other events come after those relay swimmers (since '88; possibly before as well). So the 3rd place finishers in the 100 and 200 frees should be marked as on the team, if the 2nd place finishers are.

I see that you are standardizing medals tables for athletes. Thanks for the effort! I did a partial revert of your edit to Chris Paul. Most US men's national basketball teams are notable enough to have their own standalone article e.g. 2008 United States men's Olympic basketball team. For those athletes, that year's team article would be more relevant than the generic basketball competition article. • Hey, Philip. Hope you're adjusting well to life after college -- personally, I still miss it. Ping User:Ianblair23 and make sure you and he are on the same page for infobox medal table formatting, etc. He's been reworking a wide range of swimmer infoboxes over the last month or so, and it would be nice if you and he were setting a common standard for editors who don't do a lot of work with Olympic sports, etc. I've poked him gently a couple times to get him to do it the same way all of the American and Australian swimmer infoboxes are done. Ok, In the future, I'll be more specific as to show jumping, eventing, or dressage. If you look at my edit, "Equestrian at the Summer Olympics" is already linked under the heading "Olympic Games." Well, I kind of see your point, but the problem is that the equestrianism article is a kind of catchall disaster that I think was originally about horse riding in general ... best solution definitely to link to the specific discipline. It's funny. I can find all sorts of newspaper clips for the 1985 Pan Pacs, but can't find anything for the 1986 FINA worlds. I need a reference that lists the team members for the relays for the Mike Heath article. FYI, the PDF you linked above for the 1986 worlds appears to be missing the next-to-last page for the men's results. Nevertheless, I can use the women's results to fill in some gaps in the Mary Watye article. I searched with the times, by relay name members, even the meet itself. Maybe because the U.S. didn't dominate there was limited press coverage? It is perplexing indeed. Over the next several months, I'd like to knock out GAs for Heath, Mark Stockwell, Duncan Armstrong, Randy Reese, Eddie Reese and maybe Theresa Andrews -- I think those are the last of the Gators with enough material to build GAs. Then I'd like to look at some of the great historical figures like Mark Spitz, Don Schollander and Jimmy McLane. I also want to keep improving the Americans from the last 30 years -- I keep finding sources that I can use for multiple articles. Speaking of which, you may want to look at some of the online books in the footnotes for the Tim McKee article; they're anthologies that cover multiple great swimmers. What do you have in your grab bag of tricks about the 1980 U.S. Olympic swim team? The 1980 U.S. trials? Specifically, I'm looking for a complete list of who qualified in which events. There were several books written about the boycott and the '80 athletes, but they're not available for online viewing. I may have to spend a little cash and buy used copies. Philip, I'm contemplating a house-cleaning of non-notable swimmer articles. We have a bunch of junior swimmers and/or college swimmers who simply do not satisfy the notability guidelines for inclusion as stand-alone articles. The applicable notability guidelines are:

1. the general notability guidelines per

, which requires significant media coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources, usually difficult for all but the highest profile international competitors;

2. the specific notability guideline for college athletes per

, which requires either significant coverage (i.e. GNG) or major college swimming awards (i.e. Honda Award; All-American and conference-level honors don't cut it for college swimmers);

3. the specific notability guideline for Olympic athletes per

, which only requires that they compete in the Olympics; or

4. the introductory language of

, which presumes notability for any athlete who has "participated in a major international amateur or professional competition at the highest level (such as the Olympics)." This obviously covers swimmers who have participated in the FINA championships, and probably the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, and Pan Pacific Championships, too.

As you probably know, there is no specific notability guideline for swimmers under WP:NSPORTS, but I don't think we need one. A given swimmer could qualify as notable under one or all of the four notability standards above, but a swimmer who has not competed in a senior international event is rarely going to have sufficient significant coverage in multiple independent sources to satisfy GNG. Not coincidentally, almost all swimmers who satisfy NCOLLATH, NOLYMPICS or the general language of NSPORTS also satisfy GNG.

I've already inquired at the talk page for deletion sorting what we need to do set up a swimming-specific deletion sort, so we can track swimmer articles as they are nominated for AfD. From my watchlist, there isn't anyone, besides you, who is consistently editing swimming articles. Of course I'm watching mostly American swimmers so maybe I'm not the best one to ask. As for the article scrubbing, I think that's very much needed. I can't think of any of the articles I created that could be deleted, but I can double check. If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask. On another note, you ever thought about doing another RFA? Seeing that Wikipedia is straining on administrators, you're very active, and you have an excellent record, I think you'll have favorable results. I'll nominate you myself if you wish. Philip, I think this should end the nationality vs. sporting nationality vs. national team debate that has plagued the Missy Franklin article for the last two and a half years: [1]. There is now an alternative parameter for "national_team" built into Infobox swimmer. When "national_team" is invoked, "nationality" is excluded. As you know, most swimmers are notable by virtue of their being members of their respective national team and representing their country in international competition. For the handful of notable swimmers who have never been members of their national team, they will continue to use "nationality," but with no flag icon -- the flag icon to be used exclusively for swimmers who have been members of their national team. Hey. Have you seen the new icons for gold, silver and bronze medals in the infobox medal tables? See, e.g., Dara Torres and Nicole Haislett. Eliminating the color blocks with "Gold," "Silver" and "Bronze" text, and replacing them with the circular icons, is more space-efficient, and should help reduce line-wrapping and the need for artificial abbreviations of place names and event descriptions within the medal tables. How do you like the new "national_team" optional parameter in Infobox swimmer? That seems to have ended the running Missy Franklin citizenship argument, as well as several other similar edit wars over dual citizenship vs. nationality vs. sporting nationality vs. legal residence arguments. At the end of the day, for infobox purposes, all we care about is what country an athlete competed for. Everything else is mind-numbing detail about where they were born, what citizenship their parents had, dual nationality, etc., all of which can go in the text, if someone wants to find sources and explain it.

As part of this effort, I've also been eliminating the duplicate flag icons and duplicate links for swimming (sport) and country in the infobox medals table, since they should already be linked in main body of the infobox. All 660 U.S. and all 255 Australian Olympic swimmers are already done, and I'm about 60% of the way through the 217 Canadian Olympic swimmers now. After that, I'll convert the 260+ British Olympic swimmers to the new format. Along the way, I'm also updating the infobox template to current parameter names, etc. Time-consuming, but we are imposing a new measure of uniform formatting. Once I'm done with the Brits, I'm going to try to recruit some help from Ianblair, Sillyfolkboy and others to finish off the remaining 2600 of 4000 usages of Infobox swimmer. Well, it's not just the Missy Franklin and similar citizenship debates. Using the national team parameter also makes the justification for using one flag icon in athlete infoboxes a lot more obvious, too, which has been a running battle for the last five or six years. When an athlete is a national team member, he or she clearly represents his or her country in international competition, and the case for flag icon usage is very strong. The flip side of that, when we have a notable swimmer who never competed in the Olympics or other international events, say a notable college swimmer, or channel swimmer, or national champion, then we should use the "nationality" parameter and no flag icon. Among American swimmers, I don't think are more than 2 or 3 dozen notable swimmers who fall in this latter group. When I'm done cleaning up the Canadian Olympic swimmers, I'm going to revisit the instructions and other template documentation for Infobox swimmer, and provide and example Infobox completed with all of the usual options in use. You, me and Ianblair probably ought to adopt a WikiProject Swimming policy on flag icon use, too. That way when anyone questions about infobox formatting or flag use, we can just link to the infobox instructions, example infobox, and flag policy. I've already re-written the infobox instructions to deal with the "Missy Franklin" problem -- I don't care if you were born in Canada and your mother is her majesty the fucking Queen, if you swim for the United States, you get an American flag in your infobox. He was on the roster for the 2013 World Champs, making it the semis in the 50 breast, but isn't on the 2015 roster. If it were up to me, I would delete his article because he hasn't (respectfully) achieved much on the international stage. Yes, he did make the 2013 team, but the 50 breast isn't a highly regarded event. Outside the collegiate realm, he isn't widely notable. Philipmj24 (talk) 00:21, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Steel probably does not satisfy the general notability guidelines per

WP:NOLYMPICS, and you and I are effectively the specific notability guideline committee for swimmers. LOL Do you want to keep him and see if Steel does something more, or whack him now? There are another dozen or so like him buried in the college swimmer categories, kinda sitting on the edge with some international experience, but with no Olympic experience and no international medals. Anyone who swam in the Olympics gets a pass per NOLYMPICS; IMO, anyone who won a medal in the FINA world championships, Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games, or Pan Pacs should get a pass, too. So, I'm looking at non-Olympian, non-medalist, college swimmers for possible AfDs. There are a handful of college swimmers who may be notable otherwise, but certainly not more than 25 or 30 total. I guess there is no harm for at least waiting until the Olympic trials. He may surprise us. I actually contemplated deleting my own article Austin Surhoff. In 2013 however, he won a silver medal at Universiade and he's an Olympic Trials finalist. Still, it's borderline notable. Clearly, not the friendliest introduction to Wikipedia, but he apparently has an interest in swimming, so a friendlier follow-up would be appropriate -- and we could use some new blood. Thanks. Hey, Philip. I saw that you were updating swimmer articles for the 2015 Pan Am Games from an IP address (at least I assume that was you). Please don't forget to update the infoboxes for Pan Am swimmers who were not Olympics participants -- we still have a lot of non-Olympians (and non-Americans) whose infobox needs to be updated to include the "national_team" parameter and various formatting changes for Template:Infobox swimmer, including eliminating redundant links and flags. The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
