Use of academic paper

Have been searching high and low. What is Wikipedia policy on use of academic papers. More generally are these papers free use? Fair use? Can a screenshot be used? What would be it's status in the upload box? Pokedora (talk) 19:46, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think this might answer your question:
WP:SCHOLARSHIP. If not just reply here and someone will answer any other questions you have. Also, please put new messages at the bottom of your talk page. I'm also leaving the {{Help me}} template on here in case anyone else has a better policy reference for you. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 20:29, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply
]
I
WP:edit conflicted with Wtwilson here above, I'm not 100% on how you would like to use academic papers, and what kind of papers you mean. You can definitely use academic articles from academic journals as a source - just refer to them. You shouldn't try to upload them though. Fortunately that's not needed to use them as references. If you want more information on how to cite them, take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources#Journal articles on what you should include if you cite them. If you want to go all fancy looking, you can use a template like {{cite journal}}, but it's not required. If that's not what you're asking, do ask follow ups and re-active the help me template. We're happy to help you further! Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:32, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply

Hey first off thanks. I have been around wikipedia for years now, but only now have seriously plunged in! :) I have already used the {{cite journal}}, but I got the answer in Bill W.'s reply. Basically I was more generically enquiring about the status of Research Papers and seems they are, to be sure, copyrighted. I was trying to put a screenshot of a paper, the paper itself is available online and I have provided an inline link in the article specific. I would still like to know if such screenshots are allowed. Thanks in many ways.Pokedora (talk) 04:08, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For copyright the rule of thumb is that everything is off-limits unless something specifically indicates it is released under a compatible license, with one notable exception: all works created by the U.S. Government (but not other governments). Fair use is scary(tm). Don't tread near. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 09:23, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Screenshots of the paper, like any other publication, would only be considered
fair use if the article was about the paper itself, like a book or album cover. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 12:43, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply
]
thanks. I understand. "Don't tread near" haha! I think now this will be a mark of my own policy interpretations here.Pokedora (talk) 00:05, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inline external links and about
WP:BEBOLD

Help me with... So I have seen, vaguely, that inline links to the website of any entity particular is unwarranted, or at least not very cool according to the Style Guidelines. Am I missing on something? If I do find an inlin link, shall I put it in the infobox or in the external links section?

I have another doubt too, which is regarding generic editing practices. If I do find something wrong should I go

WP:BLP
but what about generic articles? Am I destroying decorum when I just correct things, rather than flagging it for discussion?

Update I believe I missed on
WP:EL
but my doubt persists. as also about the bebold thing. Help anticipated and appreciated.

Pokedora (talk) 05:33, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Pokedora. I'm completely failing to find the exact guideline or policy right now but generally you shouldn't write external links within the article body. External links are obviously fine in references, the infobox, and the external links section. If you do find an external link in an article it depends what the link is as to where it should be moved to; if it's the subject's official website then it probably belongs in the infobox/external links section, if it's something related then
WP:EL
will tell you whether it should be put into the external links section or not.
As for your second question, if you find something you think is wrong you absolutely should
reckless; have a quick look on the talk page and article history if you think the change could be controversial. If the change seems obvious though (a typo, an unsourced contentious statement, incorrect information) then go ahead! We'd never get anything done here if we had to garner consensus and permission for every single edit :) Feel free to reply here if you have further questions, I have the page watched. I understand. Many thanks as always! I believe
VJTI
.
Btw, would you mind a small off the topic thingy? Many intransitive verbs like 'love', 'like' etc do not take the
Present continuous (English) verb form (I am loving this...) except in some
adlines. Some verbs are more typical. Like 'fail' in the context of 'understand', so the phrasal verb is 'fail to understand' and therefore the 'understand-ing' is a one-off event therefore cannot take the PP form. ( am failing to understand). Fail is typically not an intransitive verb, so 'I am failing my boards (exams)' will be fine. I see you are in the UK. Here in India, there is a huge problem, with people saying 'I'm not liking this (taste/match etc)' only to be rapped on the knuckles by our snobbish English teachers. I am not an unapologetic purist, but if Commonwealth English were not to be upheld here in the Commonwealth, whereto shall it? :P :P
