Rotten regard

See User_talk:Rotten regard#Blocked. There's no conceivable explanation for this sequence of events that doesn't involve Rotten regard being an illegitimate account.—Kww(talk) 04:30, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Sounds good to me, I'd have preferred to have seen the checkuser results first, but seeing as it was declined I've got no problem with the block. Ryan Vesey 04:40, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

RFA

To be clear, I never said his edits weren't plagiarism, I said that using the word "Stealing" was imprecise as his intent was obviously honorable, as indicated by his using the source directly after the modified sentence. At worst, it is borderline plagiarism, and in some cases like I gave example for, not. Regardless, if those are the worst examples, then the problem is one of editing method, not of dishonesty, and I don't want the problem, which exists, to be overblown with drama. Thanks for that, I was just a little perplexed. Go Phightins! 02:40, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello

Let's just say that i find an admin unjust and unsuitable for his role her on wikipedia, how do i report him? I really need your help. Thanks -- I'm Titanium  chat 16:55, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi I'm Titanium. The normal way of discussing this would be to bring it to
WP:ANI for community discussion; however, it is useful to exhaust all other methods possible first. Can you be more specific about what the problem is and I can help you decide if there is a better course of action? It might just be necessary to seek a third opinion on this matter so someone can mediate the dispute. I look forward to helping you out with this. Ryan Vesey
17:13, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Okay. This admin is unjust. Wrong decisions. yes. he takes wrong decisions. -- I'm Titanium  chat 17:45, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, if that's all that you can offer me, I can't help you. That being said, there is a difference between wrong decisions and complete unsuitability as an admin. Ryan Vesey 17:48, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Can i ask you something? Please answer. Are these people paid to make edits on wikipedia? Like to work day and night for the Wikimedia foundation? I don't get paid maybe cause i'm just another editor. Are admins paid? Are you paid? If not, then Why do people waste so much time for free? There's more to life right? -- I'm Titanium  chat 18:13, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Wikimedia Foundation employees are paid, but a majority of editors are not employees. Employees will have WMF in their username. Neither administrators nor regular editors like me are paid. Everything is volunteer. I wouldn't call it wasting time and there's nothing about editing Wikipedia that keeps its editors from the rest of life. I'm currently pursuing a Political Science and History major at the University of Pennsylvania and there's many things I do outside of that. I spend a portion of my spare time on Wikipedia because there is a satisfaction I get from sharing my knowledge with the world and it Wikipedia is the most important project in the world right now. I want to be part of that. Ryan Vesey 18:23, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
That's great. Good luck. -- I'm Titanium  chat 18:44, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

You are now an

Per Coren, you are a clerk trainee. See

WP:SOCK and the whole SPI page and formatting over the next few days. If you haven't yet, it will be helpful if you get on the IRC channel with us. Ah crap. This place is going sure going downhill....  :) Bgwhite (talk) 01:38, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
      • Put this in your User:Ryan Vesey/common.js file, create new if you need. It will do some neat tricks, like from now one, any blocked editor will show up on the page with their name struck, and if you mouse over, it will tell you who blocked, when, etc. Ultra cool. And it has the scripts. It will show as a drop down menu next to TW, with no title.

//for SPI

importScript('User:Timotheus Canens/spihelper.js')

importScript('User:NuclearWarfare/Mark-blocked script.js');

Don't ignore your wife to answer me, but I'm beginning to work my way through the reading and I thought I'd pick an investigation to look at. I happened to pick
WP:SOCK. That being said, the wording of the investigation and the comments on Mohsinalikhan's talk page lead me to believe there are deleted edits that I can't see. In a case like this would I just choose not to take action? Ryan Vesey
05:39, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes. He did log out to remove the speedy, which would be a violation of
WP:SOCK, because he would not have been permitted to remove it had he been logged in. There's really little for a non-admin clerk to do on a case like this, so leaving it alone is probably your best course of action. Help where you can, and don't interfere where you can't help.—Kww(talk
) 06:09, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
However, now that I, a "patrolling admin", have blocked the IP and marked the case as ready to be closed, you can archive it.—Kww(talk) 06:14, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Lots of time, the non-admin clerk will just compare the likelihood of the IP being the logged in user and offer an opinion. "Based on the timing and edits, IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx looks like "bob" logged out to remove the CSD tag on an article he created." Dennis Brown - © Join WER 21:16, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
Certainly. In this case, however, the speedy deletion had already occurred, so Ryan was unable to view the removal of the CSD tag. Since he isn't an admin, he isn't able to view deleted contributions.—Kww(talk) 21:43, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Co-Maitre D needed!

Dear Ryan Vesey, thank you for volunteering as a host at the Teahouse. Wikipedia is a community of people working together to make knowledge free. You are an important part of that effort! By joining as a Host, you are helping new users get a hold of the ropes here at Wikipedia, and helping old users that just have a question about how something works.

One program you may not have been aware of is the Teahouse Maître d' program. This program allows a few editors at a time to help organize the teahouse and keep it running. If you're interested in participating, sign up on the calendar. Thanks for your help at the Teahouse!

Note: I'm looking for a co-maitre d for later this week as this will be my first time...don't want to take it full on right away. If you would be willing, that'd be great. Thanks. Go Phightins! 21:55, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Question about Twinkle's CSD Log

Hey Ryan. I'm not sure if you'd know the answer to this, but I didn't think to turn on my CSD in Twinkle until very recently (because I didn't know it existed), and I've been nominating things for CSD for quite some time. Is there any way for Twinkle to parse through and add my old contributions or do you think this will have to be a manual job?

Winter!

Winter!
Winter is coming, but don't be blue! You'll see the spring coming soon. There will be snow or rain, but although it's a pain, it's ok. Winter is vain, it shows off its beauty, but it's pretty and crystal-like. Summer is fun, spring is too, is it because you have the winter blues? Don't cry, don't shout, winter is pretty, that is what it is about. The snow falls gently on the dead trees and makes them come alive. It fills the air with such pride. So, winter is pretty, winter is nice, just don't slip outside on the ice!

Hey Ryan, here are my recommendations for the page, by section:

  • Lede: The lede needs to be expanded on a little. Think of it as a blurb of information about what the entire article is about. Typically, if it is in the article itself, it doesn't need to be sourced in the lede.
  • History: LOTS more needed. I would check with the town's historical society. They will be able to help with finding links for the information or even books. Books are excellent sources that most Wikipedians forget can be used. Most think it is just weblinks and no more, but books are big time sources.
  • Geography and Climate: I would make "Climate" a section section of "Geography", other than that, I don't see any need for improvments here.
  • Demographics: Make sure you have updated 2010 information. Alot of the information from the 2010 census is now out, just took 'em awhile. I would also put in some information on the ancestry of the people of Windom in this section, but not as a sub-section. You can see how I did it at Stephens City, Virginia#Demographics.
  • Politics: I would rename this section "Government" and expand on it starting with the people on the city council (or whatever your town calls it), the mayor, fire and police chiefs, then post about the state officials and then folks in DC that represent Windom in the House and Senate.
  • Transportation: I would expand on this section, but if you find there isn't enough information, you can always add a sentence or two within the "History" section about notable events.
  • Economy: Check the Census Bureau website as they will have updated stats and figures on the economy and workforce of Windom.
  • Media: I see no room for improvment on this section...and I'm not just saying that cause I made it. :)
  • Education: I would bring the Middle and High Schools back into the main section (no need for a sub-section). Use the county school system website for sources.
  • Entertainment: I would rename this "Culture" (per
    WP:USCITY
) and expand on it. I put the parks, sights, neat things to see in this section. The Drive-In just south of Stephens City was put in the "Culture" section.
  • Notable Natives: I would rename this section "Notable Residents" and expand, just slightly, on who the people are. I gave them a sentence, plus a reference.
  • External Links: Good amount of external links, not too many.

OK, now, here is what I think you should add to the page:

  • Pictures: You have never have too many, but don't expect them all to be on the page. Try to take a slew of pictures of a nice, cloudless, Sunny day. July days are great for pictures, not great for people, but no clouds and sunny skies make from great pictures with no need for flash.
  • References: You can never have too many, and you will be expected to use them all in some places. Google Books, just regular ol' books, newspaper websites, just plain ol' newspapers, and government sites are all sources that can be used and are sometimes forgotten.
  • Religion: This is a great section because in some towns the churches have a bigger history than the town...and it is room to create another article and get a DYK in the process. You can see how I did it at Stephens City, Virginia#Religion. Don't forget to include all religions in this section from Christianity, to Judaism and beyond.
  • Infobox: Try and fill everything on the infobox, go nuts. This is the first place a reader's eyes go to, especially if they just need quick information.

Good sources to use are the

WP:USCITY as "templates" for how things should look, Checklinks for keeping an eye on outdated or dead links, and User:Wehwalt. Wehwalt is an expert at creating a good-looking article. He has a ton of GA and FA articles under his belt. You can, of course, always ask me on my talk page. WP:USCITY. This is great! I've been meaning to get to my county's historical society all summer, except it is open from 9-4 and I work 8-5. Ryan Vesey Review me!
16:24, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Glad I could help. :) Might be time to fake a "cold" and take a trip down to the historical society...or just ask for the day off. :) Some places will let folks come in after hours or on the weekend by appointment if you call and ask. - NeutralhomerTalk • 18:30, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
I already talked to the society. It's pretty bare, they've got a small library and a bunch of microfiche. I'll be done working in late August and then I'll have a week or so to make some copies before I go to school. I asked them about letting me scan images for free rather than making copies but they said no. Ryan Vesey Review me! 18:51, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Googled the historical society website and found this website from the Minnesota Digital Library. You can view the information the historical society has via that site it appears. I am guessing you checked the Cottonwood County Historical Society, they seem to have a large building from the picture. Also, try any number of these Google Books. They should help with the history of the town on different levels. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:08, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Also, check to see if Minnesota has a state library. In Virginia, it is called simply "The Library of Virginia" and is kinda like the Library of Congress, but just for Virginia. They have a ton of historical information, newspapers from all around the state, tons of books, all kinds of stuff. Each state has their own library like this (or at least I think they do), so give that a look-see as well.
Your town's public library should have an archives department, they will have tons of historical information as well in the form of newspapers, books, and the like. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:12, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

AfC Requests

Thanks for your help with Bruce Goodwin.. would you consider creating other pages that deal with Ohio politicians? There are only a few that need created or recreated who are currently in office. All of those who are redlinked are in need of creation in these two templates. Thanks.

The ones in those templates are the current ones? If so I can do it, I'm currently working on Minnesota historical ones. I'll probably spread my time between the two. The Ohio information isn't as full as I would like so it doesn't make my job super easy so I'll probably make them as stubs. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:51, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
FYI, you need to be very careful about relying on input for these articles since the IP is almost certainly a recurrence of a persistent banned user with an extensive history of copyvios among other problems. VernoWhitney (talk) 22:08, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, a checkuser might be necessary. In any case, every one of these subjects is notable and deserve at least a stub. Articles are more likely to be improved if they exist. (Wow that was a dumb way of wording it, but I hope you get my point). Since this was brought up, please note that my edits would not be in violation of Wikipedia:Banning policy#Edits by and on behalf of banned editors since I can confirm that any articles I create will be verifiable and I have an independent reason to do so (as is evidenced by the articles I have already created on various state politicians). Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:20, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
I wasn't intending to imply that your creation of the articles would be inappropriate by any means. I just wanted to make sure you knew who was encouraging you to do it, and that any "help" they offer is more trouble than it's worth. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:05, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Wilhelmina Will has given you some caramel and a candy apple! Caramel and candy-coated apples are fun Halloween treats, and promote WikiLove on Halloween. Hopefully these have made your Halloween (and the proceeding days) much sweeter. Happy Halloween!

Congrats Ryan, you have become the second inductee into my Hall of Fame. I can honestly say that you have been a help to me during my time here. I'm not the only one you've assisted with things that they didn't know how to do. I'm very grateful that I've been able to work with you here and I am very happy to induct you as a member of my Hall of Fame.

Miranda Borman BLP prod

Hi, I noticed you removed the BLP prod on Miranda Borman saying it was not unreferenced. The BLP prod template says that all BLPs must have reliable sources - the article still doesn't have reliable sources. I'm a bit confused. Hack (talk) 05:06, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Self published sources are considered reliable sources on the subject. In the case of Miranda Borman, her official website is considered a reliable source; although, it does not help establish notability. In addition, it used this as a source for the fact that she participated in Student theatre. Remember, the only purpose of the BLP prod is to make sure we don't have completely false information. Ryan Vesey 12:22, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

I see you removed the {{

spa}} tag at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bigg Boss 6 with an invitation to get a fuller explanation here. I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning—the account seems to meet the criteria of Wikipedia:Single-purpose account. You say the account's made only a single edit, but such cases are certainly covered by that essay (e.g., "The SPA tag may be used to visually highlight that a participant in a multi-user discussion has made few or no other types of contribution." (emphasis added)) —Psychonaut (talk
) 16:19, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Psychonaut, I'm happy to provide an explanation. I'll start out by explaining my belief that 16:55, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. However, I disagree that the phrasing "editor whose editing is limited to one very narrow area" implies that the editor has made several edits. An account with a single edit is by definition limited to one area. Regarding the second quotation, I think you are disregarding a key phrase in it, which I reproduce here with emphasis: "A user who appears to have a very brief editing history, or an apparent focus on one (or at most a handful of) matters or purposes, creating a legitimate reason for users to assess whether their editing and comments appear neutral, reasonably free of promotion, advocacy or personal agendas, aware of project norms, not improper uses of an account, and aimed at building an encyclopedia." That is, the sentence doesn't say that SPA tags are for users which have already shown themselves to be non-neutral or ignorant of policy and procedure. Rather, it is saying that the mere fact that the user has a brief and topically restricted is itself a reason for more carefully scrutinizing their arguments. —Psychonaut (talk) 17:25, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I suppose it depends on which way you look at it. The text says that being an SPA creates a legitimate reason to assume those things. I feel that also means that if there is no legitimate reason to assume those things the editor is not an SPA. If an account has only made one edit and it has been constructive, I don't feel that there is a legitimate reason to find anything wrong with the account and there is no reason to define the editor as an SPA. In addition, that would imply that every editor is a Single Purpose Account directly after their first edit, and probably after their first few edits, which is not true. The first few edits do not define an editor, instead, a pattern must emerge. That is the only way to determine if somebody is here for a single purpose. Ryan Vesey 17:31, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I think it's important to consider the motivation behind the creation and usual use of this template, which is to flag contributions from new accounts whose sole purpose is to participate in a discussion about the application of our policies (such as an AfD). Typically this means that the account is a sockpuppet of someone participating in the discussion, or that the operator of the account was recruited by someone to support their point of view. In these cases the user usually participates in the one discussion but then never uses their account again. The {{SPA}} template is used to alert other editors, including the one closing the discussion, that the arguments from these accounts should be scrutinized for grounding in policy, and that the sheer number of them should not be taken as evidence of broad support by the community of informed and active editors. If we were to apply your criteria and refrain from tagging accounts simply because they have no edits at all outside the discussion, then the template could almost never be used for its usual purpose. In which case, what uses do you envisage for this template? —Psychonaut (talk) 19:43, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I've never used the template; although, I've seen it used before. I don't think there are many situations where the template should be used. Good uses of this template include if someone only !votes delete at AfD's (or keep) and does nothing else. It could mark that user as having an agenda. Another would be if someone only creates or edits biographies of a certain region or topic. Their !votes are going to be skewed by the interest/purpose of their account. Ryan Vesey 20:40, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Rfc thingy

Hey Ryan. :D How was your Halloween? I had so much candy that my stomach hurt. You know, for that village pump thing you posted, maybe you could do like, an RfC or is that an RfC? Because I do think that people support that. Besides, I can sharpen my debate skills at the RfC. (Just kidding, I am on the debate team in real life though.) But I really really really badly want this to pass... it'll be my Wikipedia absolute dream come true. You're awesome for putting that out there... thank you. I really wanted this for Wikipedia, ever since I was six. Oh, I might be busy because of NaNoWriMo too. :)

Oh, question. What was with that emergency thing up there with Buster? I did see the adoption box on Deidra's page, and I thought, "Oooh-kay, then." But, uh, what happened? I didn't do anything on Halloween because I'm old and boring. Good luck writing your novel! As for the RfC, I'm trying to get an article written by the end of today. If I finish it early, I'll try to start discussion tonight. Ryan Vesey 21:18, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Ryan! Did you hand out candy though? And sure, take your time! :D Red Hat On Head (talk) 13:55, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
@ Red Hat. No Prob,. Amusing is good. I very much prefer amusing to Drama. The new user was still in diapers and wanted to adopt other newer users. And, wouldn't you know it, her diaper started to stink. I smelled it and tried to clean it up. Others got involved and she was adopted herself by a stern Mentor that gives test and grades results. All's well that ends well. BTW...My grandson is on his HS debate team. Went to USC for Debate instruction where they basically just worked on talking REEEEAAALY Fast. I Trick-or-Treated as Iago from Othello, if anyone is interested. No Candy, just slammed doors!. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:21, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Cool! I'm the person more to make rebuttals, and I'm always paired up with the more senior people... but they give me a chance. Sometimes it's annoying to take the back seat, but oh well. My favorite part of debate is when we pretend to be delegates at a UN meeting, and I always yell, "I'M GOING TO BE THE DELEGATE FROM INDIA, LIKE IT OR NOT." Always. I dressed up as an Indian princess, and there was so much candy I was stuffing my baskets under bushes and I had three baskets and a full pillowcase at the end of it. :D Red Hat On Head (talk) 18:46, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much. As I pointed out below, I'm going to be off for a month or so. If you want, I'll leave the adoption page on my watchlist. I hope to get to your test tomorrow, I took a quick glance and before I check it, take a look at your A7's again. Remember that A7 only applies if there is no credible claim of significance and that significance is a much lower threshold than notability. Ryan Vesey 04:14, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Really quick favor

Would you take a look at the top question at the Teahouse about tables. I've messed with it and even copied it into my sandbox, where it worked, and then copied it right back, when it didn't work. So I'm befuddled. Would you mess with it for a few minutes. Thanks--Go Phightins! 03:14, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

It appears to work for me, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. On another note, soon I'll be archiving my talk page and blanking my watchlist for the next month. My real life stress level is very high and Wikipedia has become too much of a distraction. Ryan Vesey 04:12, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
All right, thanks. Take care of what you need to take care of. Something like this will probably occur for me as well eventually. Good luck. Go Phightins! 04:16, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Michael David Crawford

I noticed you tried to recover the MDC article. I have more links for you if you need some help. Someone Tweeted about him and he got arrested and a photo was taken. here is an article on it not sure if it is notable enough. Here is another article on it not sure if that is notable enough. There is a CBC episode where MDC talks in it not sure if you want to call it self-publishing as it is a CBC broadcast and recording. There is a VC article that cites him not sure if it meets requirements. A recruitment article that cites MDC not sure again if this meets requirements. A Youtube video where he is interviewed on CNN I am not sure if this meets requirements either as Rick Sanchez at CNN isn't notable enough for the Joe Stack article. I was able to find out MDC is in jail and the charges have not been listed yet. I have no idea of what happened, most likely his alleged Twitter tweets raised some eyebrows, or his New Years 2011 911 prank calls caught up to him. Please let me know if any of these links help out. If not, could you help Mike by sending him computer books or something to his jail cell. I already ordered him a stationary set so he can write to people. I'll let you know if I find any more links on him or update you on his legal status. I think he might be in jail because he was trying to drive attention to himself to become more notable after being rejected by Wikipedia, but I am not sure of that. Orion Blastar (talk) 04:33, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not working on that anymore. I'm very busy with school and am unable to pick the project up. Ryan Vesey 14:16, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
