La Beauté du diable

Slobodan, You have gone to a lot of trouble to move the article title to

Beauty of the Devil
, but you have picked the wrong title. It may be a more exact translation but the film was released in the UK and USA as "Beauty and the Devil". See: video art work or New York Times review. Would you care to unscramble it? Lampernist (talk) 11:19, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Slobodan,
I quite understand the points you are making about the accuracy of title translations (don't get me started on
Grand Illusion
) but I think they need to be reflected in the text of the article rather than in the choice of the entry heading. The article as you found it was unsatisfactory because it did suggest that "Beauty and the Devil" was a translation of the French title. When the article was originally created, the author wrote "La Beauté du diable, released in the US and the UK as Beauty and the Devil..." - which was a much better way of approaching it.
The choice of article title however needs to be guided by the naming conventions (Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(films)#Foreign-language_films) which put the emphasis on common usage (rightly) and release titles (more problematic). "Beauty of the Devil" (or should we say "The Beauty of the Devil"??) doesn't match either of those criteria (I don't think you will find it in many film lists or reference books) and is potentially misleading. It matters particularly when you are trying to cross-reference titles with other sources - especially online ones - when a discrepancy of one or two letters can prevent you from finding something. There is also a lingering problem within Wikipedia with a number of pages which are now showing links to the abandoned title of "Beauty and the Devil".
Personally I would prefer to see the article entered under its original French title, since that is what most of the modern literature will refer to, and the English versions can then be explained in the text. And in the light of this discussion, that may yet be the best solution, but it runs the risk of challenge from other editors who set a higher premium upon 'English-only'. At any rate, I do feel that what we have at the moment should be revised to address some of these points. With best wishes. Lampernist (talk) 15:13, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
