Request reason:

I don't understand why I got blocked. The block notice just said that I was clearly not here to build an encyclopedia. Please explain how.

Decline reason:

Your fooling around in the sandbox indicates that's more important to you than contributing to the encyclopedia. 331dot (talk) 09:55, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Then why did I get blocked if I wasn't damaging Wikipedia when I was fooling around in the sandbox? Swissairproud001 (talk) 17:31, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You were not blocked for vandalism or other damage; you were blocked for
WP:NOTHERE
, which means that you appear to be using Wikipedia for other purposes (like writing nonsense in the sandbox) instead of making positive contributions to the project. The policy isn't there just to block disruption, it also prevents hordes of users doing stuff on Wikipedia that doesn't further its purpose, only wasting editor time and server space.
I have looked through your past contributions, and I can see that you have made positive contributions in the past, so if you can make a sincere request (following the suggestions in Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks), you have a good chance of being unblocked. Liu1126 (talk) 18:42, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are several OK edits in your contributions. There are also things like this, this and this. However, as Liu1126 says, if you make a convincing unblock request there's a good chance it'll be accepted. You might want to explain what was wrong with some earlier edits, and outline some good ones you'd like to make. To any admin reading this: do please go ahead and unblock if you are persuaded that the editor intends to make positive contributions from now on. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:43, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Does satisfying the standard offer in this case substantially increase the chance of being unblocked? Swissairproud001 (talk) 21:06, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Swiss, I mean that if you make a convincing unblock request now, not in six months' time, and show intent or determination to become a productive editor, there's a good chance your account will be unblocked. Good luck! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:38, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have just posted the unblock request. Will the process of getting unblocked become harder for me if it gets declined this time? Swissairproud001 (talk) 00:12, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Request reason:

I was blocked mainly because I was fooling around in the sandbox instead of working on Wikipedia pages, but I also made a few inaccurate or nonsensical edits as well. In this, I got interested in the name “Fort M’Henry” after seeing it in the Wikipedia page of The Star-Spangled Banner. In the Wikipedia page of Fort McHenry, I noticed that there was nothing mentioning “Fort M’Henry”, so I added it to the page, without realizing that it was only the poem that used “Fort M’Henry” its name. In this, I wanted to say that the State Anthem of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is now popular among teenagers as a meme nowadays, so I decided to put it in the “Post-1991 use” part. However, I didn’t notice that I put it in the “Use in the Russian Federation” part as well, which only has content about the use as the national anthem of Russia, which made it look out of place. Also, in that sentence regarding its popularity among teenagers, I didn’t make it clear that what I meant as “minor” was just a part that sounded very good in the anthem, and the anthem is in C major. In the “considered by the adolescense as one of the greatest anthems“ part, I was trying to say that the teenagers think that it sounded good, but I used the word “adolescense” which had 2 problems. The first one was that it was a word meaning a period of change, instead of meaning teenagers. The second one was that it was spelt wrong, which made me think that there was some error that made it a blank page, so I took the contents from the Adolescence page and put it in the Adolescense page, which caused this. For the fooling around the sandbox part, I was interested in the sandbox, but I stopped fooling around after a while and continued editing other Wikipedia pages. This can be seen in my contributions page. This means that I stopped fooling around in the sandbox and got back to building the encyclopedia. If I get unblocked, I will fix errors in Wikipedia pages about world history. I will also help improve pages about bicycles and transport as seen in my contributions. For example, I want to remove the “(until 2000)” part in the successors part of the State Anthem of the Soviet Union because it already said successors, so it doesn’t mean anything if one of the successors was removed in 2000. Accept reason:

Your request addresses past mistakes and shows intent to make positive contributions, so I've unblocked your account. Welcome back! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:51, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to the Balkans or Eastern Europe, a topic designated as

contentious
. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the

Ctopics/aware
}} template.
