I am looking for clarification on the copyright status of old photographs, specifically taken in 1912 at the latest. The photos in question were posted to facebook as part of a series of postcards from the local area, Leigh, Staffordshire. What kind of law / copyright status would these photos belong to? The photographs themselves were not taken by anyone relating to the facebook user, the photos were rather found in various places. TVKR (talk) 22:43, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- There's a chart that may help answer your question at c:File:UK non-Crown copyright flowchart.pdf. If you can document the date of the photograph to before 1957, its copyright expires 70 years after publication or 70 years after the death of the photographer. But copyright is complicated, so you may want to consult with specialists on Wikimedia Commons for what sort of evidence is needed to claim a photo is in the public domain. Wikipedia itself does not want to host public domain photos nor copyrighted photos for which a fair-use justification cannot be made. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 01:23, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
