"Nurse anesthesiologist" is not a term that is recognized in the U.S. by any legitimate medical or nursing governing body or licensing board. Anesthesiologists are physicians, as are cardiologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, etc. Anesthetists include anesthesiologists, as it is an umbrella term. All anesthesiologists are anesthetists; however, not all anesthetists are anesthesiologists.

"Nurse anesthesiologist" is a fabricated term and its use is both invalid and inappropriate. It is not recognized by the umbrella organization of CRNA's, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists(AANA). As delineated in this document, three terms were agreed upon unanimously. None included "nurse anesthesiologist".
