Copying within Wikipedia

Hello. Following on a listing at

WP:SCV
, I am cleaning up from copyright problems in the Regular Show season articles. I see two of these issues were created by you, and I need to be sure that you are aware of what is required to copy content from one Wikipedia page to another.

Wikipedia's content is not public domain, but instead is liberally licensed for reuse and modification, so long as the terms of the license or licenses (as we have two) are met. One of the requirements of both licenses is attribution. Another is that the content must remain free. Reusing content on Wikipedia automatically meets the second term, as it is under the same licensing scheme, but the attribution requirement needs to be met by the user who copies content from one page to another. This is done at minimum by an edit summary with a direct link to the source article. Best practices also recommend the use of the template {{copied}} or a similar note on the talk pages of the two articles to ensure that the attribution chain is not broken.

Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia explains how to meet this legally mandated requirement. It's not a formality, but a necessary compliance with our Terms of Use.

I have repaired the copyright problem with

Regular Show (season 7), but if you know of any other articles into which you pasted unattributed content from other Wikipedia pages, please provide the attribution now so that the content is compliant with license. Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:07, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (2nd request)

Draft:Family Guy (season 18). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you.
