Doing my best to clarify that finance is part of economics. Mathematical finance is not separate from or (mathematically) better than economics at explaining financial phenomena. The capacity to predict asset prices and stock indices hinges intrinsically on the capacity to understand underlying economic phenomena. Naive mathematical interpretations may omit important elements of human psychology and abscond from interactions among security prices (co-movement, externalities, simultaneity and reverse-causality).
