In researching data of wide variety, there is an indication that the the surname O'Tuathail (O'Toole) arose from the 12th century and reports the surname is descended from Tuathal Mac Augaire, King of Leinster who reportedly died in 958. However, genetic data is relating this surname more and more back to Conn Cétchathach through perhaps one of Conn's brother's with a common ancestor in their father Túathal Techtmar. Thus, I would like to initiate a discussion based on this idea, or information. VoodooShamen (talk) 16:23, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to request assistance with determining all the descendant surnames associated with Túathal Techtmar. Apparently nearly every surname in Ireland claims descendent from one of his sons Conn Cétchathach. However, genetics indicate a far different view. I have discovered more than 200 WP documents that reference the subordinate Conn, but find few if any substantiated instances where the associations can be concluded based on the multiple documents in Wikipedia. Does anyone have a good idea on how to correct these issues across the board and create an archive of all documents that reference this single surname? Maybe you might like to look over

Please don't add those refs back into the article. They were written over a century ago and aren't reliable sources of information for an early medieval figure. If you want to improve the article on Art you're going to have to look for good modern sources on the subject. See Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources (history).

Same goes for the Quinn article actually. Look for MacLysaght's books on Irish surnames. He states that there are at least five separate Quinn septs throughout Ireland. The principal sept were Dalcassians, apparently descended from a certain Niall ua Cuinn who fell at Clontarf - they have nothing to do with Art. Incredibly, but unsurprisingly, in the Quinn article you've managed to turn this Niall into Niall of the Nine Hostages and a "martyr"! The reason why the Quinn article is in such a sorry state is because you've inserted your own assumptions and misunderstandings into it. That article needs to be started afresh, and needs to be based upon reliable modern sources for every claim. That way you and potential readers learn something worth knowing.

So you need to read and understand

Wikipedia:SYNTH and Wikipedia:No original research. You also have to have some understanding of what you're writing about before you add it into Wikipedia. I will do that. However, in each of the articles the genealogies on the pages themselves go deep enough to shed some more information on the lines ancient, medieval, or otherwise. Such that Niall of the Nine Hostages would be O'Cuinn. I guess, I am not a Quinn so I am not 100% sure. I stumbled on the debacle reading about the five septs. Of which it all seems to be a fairy tale and is always more than a century old, so your argument is rather moot in those regards.

The assumptions you seem to believe I have made are assumptions that are made in all of the items that reference the ancient annals of any society and they are taken very far out of context. They are written to change the true concordance of the information itself.

In any case, these are not vastly important issues for me and since you appear to be the interested party in providing incomplete information I will take them off my watch list and you may do with them as you like. I should think however, they are connected as the genealogies on most all the high king's pages lead to the same person with only a slight deviation in which language is used.
