Nominator's rationale: Delete There's no need for an eponymous category since the three articles are well-interlinked. I have also created Category:Books by Dale Carnegie to help navigate between the two books. Pichpich (talk) 19:21, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Delete This is a category for people who "love to ice skate with friends" and has therefore little value for collaboration. If kept it should be renamed to something like Category:Wikipedians interested in ice skating although that changes the scope. Pichpich (talk) 19:10, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia categories sorted by month

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's ). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus, defaulting to keep.
The discussion has clarified that the purpose of this category is to group categories which are not strictly maintenance categories, but which do have by-month sub-categories which are processed by a bot. There is no consensus to delete this category, but only one editor had any enthusiasm for keeping it. --

Nominator's rationale: Delete I placed Category:Categories for discussion back in Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month since it is part of the Category:Wikipedia maintenance subtree. So there are only two subcategories left in the present category: Category:Current events and Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Arguably the first one isn't really a Wikipedia category and it's only weakly sorted by month. But in any case, these two subcategories share absolutely nothing so the parent category isn't useful for navigation. Pichpich (talk) 18:59, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - per
WP:OC#ARBITRARY. Why per month vs per week or per day? : ) - Semi-humour aside, there doesn't seem any reason to keep this. But let's please make sure there are no bots that will suddenly break because (as we later find out) this was some sort of tracking category : ) - jc37 19:05, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply

Good point. I'm guessing Anomie (who created the category) will comment here and he can probably clarify this. Pichpich (talk) 19:12, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This category was specifically created to hold categories that don't belong in Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month but for which we still need a bot (currently AnomieBOT) to create the monthly subcategories. If you remove Category:Current events and Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption from that category, then AnomieBOT will no longer create categories such as Category:Current events from September 2012 and Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption from September 2012 as needed, which will result in the articles that would go in those dated categories being placed into Category:Articles with invalid date parameter in template.
Unless you miscategorize these non-maintenance categories into Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month instead, of course, but then you have to watch out for someone realizing they're not actually maintenance categories and removing them. Anomie 20:22, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried to find a definition of what we consider a "maintenance category". Best I could find was this how-to guide by Anomie : ) - From what I gather, it seems that they are to help facilitate mantenance of the encyclopedia.
With that in mind, I think we could put current events there, maybe. (Though I agree that it's somewhat stretching things.) And then, it would just be a matter of altering the bot to not look in the nommed cat, and to look at the adoption one directly.
That said, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to just keep both container cats. Though I think that perhaps some clearer inclusion criteria for each may be helpful? - jc37 21:57, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The criteria for inclusion in one or the other of the two cats is clear, that being "it needs a bot to create dated subcategories". All that would be needed is a clearer definition of "maintenance" versus "non-maintenance" to decide which of the two something should go in. Personally, I'd rather keep the container category so the bot code doesn't have to be updated any time someone wants to create or delete a dated non-mainenance category. And yes, I wouldn't think Category:Current events is a maintenance category. Anomie 17:15, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then I'm fine with Keep, but update category page. If you'd please add what you did here about the inclusion criteria and that a bot is involved, etc. That way someone in the future doesn't unknowingly delete it as C1, for example. - jc37 19:32, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Adjusted somewhat. Feel free to adjust further. Anomie 19:56, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. I was going to add a link to Wikipedia:Creating a dated maintenance category, but wasn't sure if it directly applied : ) - jc37 06:35, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's ). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete all. The consensus is that these maintenance categories serve no purpose. Note Anomie's comment that that some templates may also be superfluous. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:22, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: A number of categories from Category:Counter categories no longer have (or never had?) a maintenance category that feeds them, making them permanently empty. Since they are tagged as "Administrators: Please do not delete this category even if it is empty!", tagging them for speedy deletion isn't the best solution, so a mass CfD it is. Nominated are:

Speedy Delete The "please do not delete" note is to prevent the deletion of the ones where the feeder category exists. If the feeder category doesn't exist for these, there's no point in keeping it. Note there are probably also associated templates, such as Template:Articles with unsourced geodata progress and Template:Monthly clean-up category/Messages/Articles with unsourced geodata for Category:Monthly clean up category (Articles with unsourced geodata) counter, that should also be speedily deleted. • Oppose. Contains both IBF and BWF championships. And includes the sport what it is talking about. Nobody knows what is IBF, BWF, WBF. Badminton is the most useful title. --Florentyna (talk) 06:20, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I agree that 'Badminton' is the key word and that BWF is not a well-known abbreviation (I would guess, given that it is sports related, that it would be wrestling).
