- Keep All It's covered by fair use law.[1] The image is not decorative it helps to identify the episode, illustrate key plot points, and provides visual reference to the episodes thematic elements, and style. After all this is a visual medium and a picture is worth a thousands words as they say. I believe that the Star Trek episode pages could use more illustrations across the board. I also don't believe that one user should arbitrarily mass submit images for deletion. The use of images to illustrate a TV episode is very common site wide and generally held as acceptable and legal. --Mccordscvs (talk) 10:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Keep. I respect your good faith in submitting this batch of deletion nominations, but IMO the issue needs to be reviewed by the community before any of the images in question are deleted. This comment applies as well to the deletions you proposed yesterday (2013 May 22), and I will be placing a similar note there. āĀ Richwales (noĀ relation to Jimbo) 04:54, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep per Richwales (see File:STMatterofHonor.jpg. As stated by others below, these images are illustrative of the episodes and increase understanding, so their use seems appropriate. Such images are so widely used in episode articles that the wider community seems to support their use, so wider community discussion as proposed by Richwales seems necessary. --AussieLegend (ā) 16:00, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete: Clear failure of WP:NFCC#8. None of the keep arguments indicate what significant increase in understanding this image generates or what detrimental effects would occur from its omission.āKww(talk) 00:50, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep The image seems quite good at illustrating the topic of shore leave; the main characters and their close interaction; the unusual appearance of a Ferengi; the distinctive appearance of Picard; &c. Prior knowledge of such things cannot be assumed as the reader may have zero knowledge of Star Trek and its features (I have a friend like that - he's never seen a James Bond movie, for example). As the article stands by itself, it is appropriate to illustrate such prominent features which appear in the episode and so WP:NFCC#8 is satisfied. The only issue is whether there's a better image. If you Google for images of "Captain's Holiday", Google readily provides a good selection of still images. This demonstrates that such images are considered fair use by an information provider such as Google or Wikipedia. Warden (talk) 18:58, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete - does not significantly add to understanding of episode, and omission would not be detrimental to understanding of episode. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 04:10, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: No Consensus. Discounting the keep !votes that don't address this image in particular, Miyagawa has a reasonable argument, which outside of the mass nomination context, would have gotten more discussion. I don't think consensus is strong enough to delete on this one, but I think a renomination is in order to better consider the

- Keep Unfortunately in your mass nomination you didn't stop to read each fair use description. This image is used to help understand the makeup and costuming in this episode which is discussed in the article itself. Miyagawa (talk) 18:09, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete: Clear failure of WP:NFCC#8. None of the keep arguments indicate what significant increase in understanding this image generates or what detrimental effects would occur from its omission. Miyagawa at least makes a stab at it, but the word "skimpy" certainly suffices as a description of the outfit: a picture of "skimpy" is gratuitous.āKww(talk) 00:55, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete: The image presumably depicts something in the plot -- perhaps "Soong attempts to escape, but Archer recaptures him"? But the image does not significantly aid in understanding that section. Nothing in the "Reception" section is depicted in the image. In the "Production" section, the actress "described the costume as slightly skimpier than she was used to", which is depicted in the image, but only in a cursory way. ā Quadell (talk) 12:24, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Note to Keep voters: If you feel a screenshot passes WP:NFCC#8, it will not help to complain about mass nominations or defend the legality of the image use, since these are not relevant. Instead, if you could identify which specific sections of prose in the body of the article are depicted by the screenshot, it will help make the closing admin's job much easier. ā Quadell (talk) 12:24, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Undecided. The article extensively discusses that the cast were African-Americans, and that the theme was "1940s Africa", and this material is discussed throughout. The only question is, does this particular screenshot depict this aspect of production and criticism? I honestly can't tell. ā Quadell (talk) 12:30, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]- But there isn't any prose in the article that explicitly mentions any particular aspect, scene, costume, or anything as to what constitutes the allusions to "1940s Africa". If there were an image needed to illustrate what they were doing, which scenes are their homages and which scenes are straight-up science-fiction invention? ā fourthords | =Ī= | 12:39, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Note to Keep voters: If you feel a screenshot passes WP:NFCC#8, it will not help to complain about mass nominations or defend the legality of the image use, since these are not relevant. Instead, if you could identify which specific sections of prose in the body of the article are depicted by the screenshot, it will help make the closing admin's job much easier. ā Quadell (talk) 12:30, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete as not being necessary to understand any particular prose in the article (]
- Delete (changed from undecided). I'm sure that a different screenshot could pass or non-free content policy, but I just don't see this one doing so. After all this is a visual medium and a picture is worth a thousands words as they say. I believe that the Star Trek episode pages could use more illustrations across the board. I also don't believe that one user should arbitrarily mass submit images for deletion. - Note to Keep voters: If you feel a screenshot passes WP:NFCC#8, it will not help to complain about mass nominations or defend the legality of the image use, since these are not relevant. Instead, if you could identify which specific sections of prose in the body of the article are depicted by the screenshot, it will help make the closing admin's job much easier. ā Quadell (talk) 12:44, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Right now, I feel it's purpose is instead to decorate an infobox where nothing needs its illustrative properties. ā fourthords | =Ī= | 12:50, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After all this is a visual medium and a picture is worth a thousands words as they say. I believe that the Star Trek episode pages could use more illustrations across the board. - Keep - with the multiple alien races present (which have minor, if any other appearances in TOS), this picture does add significantly to the understanding of the episode, and "pig-faced alien" is too generic to get the point across properly. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 05:12, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Delete:The content of this screenshot is not mentioned outside of "plot" section, and it is not clear which plot point is actually depicted. I have no doubt that additional material could justify this image's use (discussion of costumes, production, commentary on the look of alien races by critics), but such material is not present. ā Quadell (talk) 13:11, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]- Note to Keep voters: If you feel a screenshot passes WP:NFCC#8, it will not help to complain about mass nominations or defend the legality of the image use, since these are not relevant. Keep. It's borderline, but the scene is clearly mentioned in the plot section ("Kirk beams down to join the landing party and search for the creatures responsible. Inside a building, they find pancake-sized single-celled organisms that are highly resistant to phaser fire."), and the image depicts the look of the creatures, mentioned in the production section ("The neural parasites were made by covering individual novelty vomits with a clear, inflatable bladder.") I'd say that's enough to pass NFCC#8. ā Quadell (talk) 13:21, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]- Delete. The claim that the creatures were made with "novelty vomit" (LOL, learn a new English word every day) is unsourced. So the only thing we can work with is the description in the plot summary: "pancake-sized single-celled organisms". Now, that's a fine description and helps to imagine the scene just fine. I don't need the image to understand the plot, and there's nothing else beyond that. Fut.Perf. ā¼ 19:29, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete (changed from Keep). In the months since this image was nominated, the article has had unsourced statements regarding this image removed, and no sourced statements have taken its place. - Delete. Much as I would like to see a screen shot from this episode in the article ā and despite my lingering general misgivings about how narrowly NFCC#8 is being interpreted here ā I will concede that this particular image is not a terribly good representation of the episode. An image of Spock going down alone to the planet's surface to retrieve one of the "flying fried egg" parasites, despite being in excruciating pain from having one of the things attached to his back, would probably be a better choice to illustrate this article. āĀ Richwales (noĀ relation to Jimbo) 18:50, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- As long as there is no analytical discussion of pretty much anything in the article, there is no need to illustrate anything. That other scene is no more in need of visual illustration than this one. Like so many others, this page now consists entirely of plot renarration (I refuse to call it "plot summary", because it isn't even that.) First develop the page into an actual, legitimate article, which it isn't now; then, if and when the need arises to have something illustrated, illustrate it. - Easily replaced by "Star Trek crew continues its fascination with things off-screen, wearing Nazi uniforms to give this theme a little variety." Blatant WP:NFCC#8 failure, as there is no detrimental effect on a reader's understanding caused by the removal of this image.āKww(talk) 05:01, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep, the content of the screenshot is discussed in the "plot" section, but more importantly, their costumes are mentioned in the "notes" section as being one of the reason that the episode was not aired in Germany. Saying in text that the uniforms looked somewhat Nazi-ish will leave the reader wondering how exactly the uniforms looked, given the severity of the reaction. In my opinion, NFCC#8 is met because of that. ā Quadell (talk) 13:52, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete. I disagree with Quadell here: everybody knows what nazi uniforms look like, and even if you don't, it's really of no importance: what matters is not that readers can visualize the precise colours and cut of the uniforms but that they understand what social significance they have. This is something that text can explain; an image can't. This point of policy bears repeating: the crucial thing is not that the content of an image must be discussed in the text; the crucial thing is that it must be discussed in a way that would be significantly less easy to adequately understand without the visual support of the image.
