- What are the criteria for creating or adding to Wikipedia articles? How do I cite sources? May I cite myself?
- Does every object or artifact in the Smithsonian merit its own Wikipedia article? What about people? Or animals?
- Is it a conflict of interest for me to edit a page about the Smithsonian or my unit? What about the page for a person or object represented in our collections?
Learn about Wikipedia's standards and guidelines regarding trusted sources, citations, original research, notability and conflict of interest. This is a great opportunity to see where your research or subject area fits, what tools you can use to broaden content coverage, and how you can avoid conflict of interest as a Smithsonian staff member.
Sarah Stierch will present a brief talk about these policies (10 minutes) and the rest will be a Q&A with you!

- Images from my museum/unit are in Wikipedia. How did they get there? Is that okay?
- How does Wikipedia safeguard against contributing to copyright infringement?
- What is the Wikimedia Commons? Is it different from the Flickr Commons, for example?
As a GLAM professional you know that just mentioning copyright is like opening a giant can of worms! Fortunately, Wikipedia offers a highly structured set of policies and guidelines for contributors and editors who wish to use images, audio, and other media in their articles. During this brown bag we will examine the basics of Wikipedia and Copyright and how media copyrights work in Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons.
Sarah Stierch will present a brief examination of policies and licenses accepted (10 minutes) followed by a Q&A session with you!
