Request: Both images are really old and extremely rare. They both suffer from lots of image noise, strangely colored pixels in random places and lack of sharpness in some areas. I was wondering if anyone can do a general clean-up for both images. I hate editing non-free images on Wikipedia. You spend time making an image look nice, then three months later you get a message on your talk page from some bot stating that it's no longer being used in an article (or some other such nonsense) and it's going to be promptly deleted. Utterly wasted time and effort... one of the supreme joys of Wikipedia. So to minimize such annoyances, I tend to stick with totally free Commons images. While the occasional instance of a commons file (along with my time & effort) ends up in the delete bin, the instances are much fewer and farther between. And while I don't have a lot of spare time, at least I know that the time I *do* volunteer won't be wasted by bots and overzealous Wikipedians. <end of rant>  Done JBarta (talk) 17:55, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cropped. Reduced pixelation. Don't understand "desharpen" (and can't really do much about the sharpness there). Can't move a file on Commons - ask an admin there. Materialscientist (talk) 23:22, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded a new image from source. Better, though not much. Added {{rename}} template. A filemover should be along within the next few days and rename it. JBarta (talk) 00:01, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I won't be able to deal with the crease on my own anyways, seems to be missing a row of pixels down the middle. Any miracle workers? Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:46, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Rather than attempt to work with what little background there was in the original photo, I opted to completly change the background to something neutral. Seems to look Ok. I think if you had never seen the original photo, you would never guess that the edit was "faked". JBarta (talk) 21:27, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that's quite a change! But it looks great, and like you said, it doesn't look at all faked. Thanks again. Delaywaves talk 01:14, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The crop seems a little blurrier (I had previously downsampled to get rid of some of the noise) Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:42, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is blurrier, and this is all about setting the acceptable noise level. Materialscientist (talk) 07:56, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Fair enough. I'll downsample again to make the blurriness less readily apparent. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:04, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Here are five new images of British actors, pictured with the same girl. Please can you do a crop for each of these so that "the fan" (Brown hair and glasses) is no longer featured in the image. Obviously some are close to her face and low resolution, but could you make them good fits as possible to their blp infoboxes? I'm not sure if anyone here can move images so that "with a fan" is no longer in the image title - now that would be a bonus.RaintheOne BAM 18:15, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

I took the easy ones (the first four). The fifth will either have to wait, or someone else can give it a crack. Regarding image renaming, the original image is actually "with a fan", so I say leave them as they are. JBarta (talk) 21:06, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did the fifth (Carley Stenson), though trying to completely edit out the fan wasn't giving a satisfactory result and I didn't want to spend excessive time trying. Hopefully a simple crop does the trick for you. Seems ok to me. JBarta (talk) 10:11, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could we use transparency instead of white? I have a thing against big white spaces on the blue DYK background, and the computer I'm on only has Paint. Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:58, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
jpeg doesn't support transparency; png does, but wikimedia software renders png files significantly less sharp than jpg (in a 100x100px thumb). Materialscientist (talk) 13:08, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How does it handle gif or tiff? Both support transparency, and Photoshop can handle both (GIMP too, probably). Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:18, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not a big fan of PNG for photographic type images, however, I can create a smaller PNG version with transparency for use in your DYK effort if you wish. JBarta (talk) 13:33, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
An alternative is to use something like the right image (it can be tweaked, but I've got to go offline). Materialscientist (talk) 13:43, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
