Project Overview

Kateb Maktub project is an initiative organized by the Emirates Literature Foundation in collaboration with Wikimedians of UAE User group in hopes to enrich Wikipedia’s content about Arab authors and books in both English and Arabic. We strongly believe that information availability plays a crucial role in creating a relationship between readers and authors. Our main objective is to raise international awareness about Arab writers and their books, to provide high quality and credible information about them, and to broaden the horizons of cultural communication between the Arab world and the rest of the world.

Competition dates
  • The competition’s duration is one month, starting from July 18 to August 18.

Participation Terms
  1. Participants are required to create a Wikipedia account and use that account only to create articles. Contributions from any other IP addresses will not be accepted.
  2. Participants are allowed to have one Wikipedia account and if any false accounts are discovered, all these accounts and articles created by them will be excluded from the competition.
  3. If a participant wishes to participate in the competition, they must include their username on the lists of participants and the category to which they belong.
  4. Entries are for individuals only, no participation is accepted by joint institutions, entities, or accounts.
  5. Each participant must submit a report containing the articles they have created. It must be submitted within a maximum of 48 hours after the end of the competition date. A detailed format of the report will be shared. The articles that are included in the report will be the ones that the arbitration committee review and evaluate.
  6. The arbitration committee has the right to remove any user that does not apply the required conditions or ignores warnings and instructions sent to them on their Wikipedia account.
  7. Participants in the competition are classified into two categories according to the following conditions:
    1. First Category (Experts): users who have 500 number of edits or more since the start of the competition (July 18) and are registered users for at least 1 months prior to the start of the competition.
    2. Second Category (beginners): users who have edited less than 500 number of edits since the start of the competition (July 18) and are registered users for less than 1 months prior to the start of the competition.
  8. We will be sending training videos on how to create articles on Wikipedia to any participants who request them prior to the start of the competition
Articles Terms
  1. The objective of the competition is to create English articles about authors and books, which are listed on the Competition page, whether translated from other Wikipedia articles or written from external sources, provided they meet the article terms of Wikipedia guidelines.
  2. The competition is limited to articles that are on the list only.
  3. The minimum acceptable article size is 5 KB for authors and 2 KB for books, any article that is less than that will not be accepted.
  4. To increase your chances of winning, contestants must create the largest number of perfect articles (articles that meet publishing standards and are not deleted and are at least 5 KB for authors and 2 KB for books) for the authors and books listed.
  5. Created articles must be written in an appropriate structure, well-written and clear, well translated, and understandable, does not contain long and redundant sentences, encyclopedic, well documented, and includes verifiable sources. The article should contain an infobox, categories, and images (if found), which is in accordance with Wiki formatting.
  6. Any contributions done before or after the date of the competition will not be accepted by the Judges.
  7. Any participant can modify the name of the pre-existing book in English that are on the competition list, if there are any other translations approved by publishing houses.
Evaluation and Points System

The winning participant is the one who achieves the most points Articles that meet the initial requirements are evaluated by the competition Judges. Points are distributed as follows:

  1. 4 points are given per article created in the minimum size required as mentioned above, provided that it is well written and structured and includes all elements of an encyclopedic article.
  2. 10 additional points per each 2000 bytes that the user adds to an article, provided it’s not verbiage (unnecessarily lengthy and redundant)
  3. Every participant has the right to reserve 3 articles at the same time and is prohibited to reserve a fourth one unless one of the articles previously reserved are completed (2000 bytes).
  4. Articles under 2000 bytes will have 0 points (if they are between 1999 and 0 bytes). Articles must be categorized, has an infobox, and secondary resources (verifiable). Articles must not contain empty templates, or redundancy for the sole purpose of increasing the size of the article.
  5. 1 point is given if you add templates: infobox person, infobox books it must contain all information relating to the person or book (date and place of birth, death, nationality, etc...)
  6. 1 point is given to articles with 3 or more referances (less than 3 referances will have 0 points).
  7. 2 points is given if you create a Wikidata item for the article.
  8. 1 point if you article is not an orphan article (Any article in Wikipedia that is not linked to other articles on Wikipedia is considered an orphan article.)
  9. 1 point for any number of images (Adding freely licensed images for the author or the book from Wikimedia commons)
