Linking Wikipedia to libraries....

Wikipedia Loves Libraries is an event to promote local meetups for discussing libraries in individual cities. Wikipedia depends on content from media sources, and libraries are the source of sources.

Below are some suggestions, but ultimately participants should decide what they'd like to learn or edit, so add to this section as you see fit. The scope could possibly go beyond Seattle even. Many nearby communities have little more than a bot-written stub drawing on Census data.

Skill requirements

Behind the scenes at the Seattle Public Library

There will be multiple levels support available at the event, therefore participants with no experience ranging to dedicated Wikipedians are welcomed, and will be challenged at their own skill level.

What to bring

  • It is highly suggested to bring a laptop.
  • Ideas for topics or articles that you want to work on.
  • We'll have the library's resources at our disposal, but if you have a special resource, bring it.
  • Would-be-editor friends.
  • Digital pictures you've taken that you'd like to be on Wikipedia.

Outcomes

Several local librarians and archivists were walked through the account creation process and introduced to the basics of editing, adding sources, creating articles, etc. Additionally, the librarian from Seattle Public Library walked the group through the use of some licensed resources (especially full text for some local newspapers) that could be useful in editing articles.
