Due to the large variety of codes of football played in Papua New Guinea, conflicts sometimes arise when naming them in articles. The following is a proposed guideline for use of the word "football" in Papua New Guinea articles.

The four main football codes should be referred to as:

• Soccer
• Australian rules football
• Rugby league
• Rugby union

Other less popular codes, which should also be disambiguated using the below rules:

• American football
• International rules football
