Goal(s):
- Collaboratively develop and expand upon the American Democracy Project Wikipedia page focusing on Civic Commitment
- Contribute a substantive and substantial article(s)to Wikipedia directly related to the American Democracy Project. You can expect to contribute to at least 10-20 paragraphs, or approximately 1,500 words.
- Develop a sustainable framework to showcase Winona State University's contribution to the American Democracy Project in regards to Civic Commitment.
Getting Started: Introduction and Become a Wikipedian
Goals:
- Learn about Wikipedia and becoming a Wikipedian as a way to connect with and contribute to a global audience
- Apply Wikipedia to the course American Democracy Project
- Become a Wikipedian
Introduction:
- Preview the 5 Pillars Prezi overview of Wikipedia
- Read:Wikipedia:Five pillarson the Wikipedia website
- Read:Welcome to Wikipedia Brochure
Tasks to complete by: January 23, 2012
- Create a Wikipedia User Account: This does not have to be your WSU username and should not be the same as your WSU password.
- Video on creating an account,Account and user page creation handout,
Optional Tasks:
- Create and Develop a Wikipedia User Page
- Edit your userpage to include a short bio (100 words or less about yourself). Remember your userpage is still public domain.
Step 1: American Democracy Project Editing Basics
- In class
- Campus Ambassadors introduce:
- Wikipedia's Article Wizard to Get us Started
- Basics of editing
- Anatomy of Wikipedia articles, what makes a good article, how to distinguish between good & bad article
- Instructor and/or Campus Ambassadors talk about Wikipedia culture & etiquette.
- Handouts and videos: Talk pages tutorial video, Evaluating Wikipedia article quality brochure, Wikimarkup cheatsheet
- Assignments
- Deadline: January 23, 2012 (in-class)
- Create a user page and sign up on the list of students on the course page.
- To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself to one of the class's Online Ambassadors (via talk page), and leave a message for a classmate on their user talk page.
- Milestone
- All students have Wikipedia user accounts and are listed on the course page.
- All students have edited the American Democracy Project or Civic Commitment Wikipedia Article
- All students are prepared to move forward with the editing of the Civic Commitment article.
Step 2: Building Your Article
- Out of Class
- Within your groups, add new information, backed up with a citation to an appropriate source, to a Wikipedia article related to the class.

- Assignment
- Deadline February 20 - 27, 2012
- Content has been added to the article.
- Provide feedback on the information posted by other groups to the article. This can be done on the article talk page.
- Milestones
- All students have added content to the Citizen Alum article
- All students have posted feedback on the article talk page
Step 3: Final Contributions to the Article
- Out of Class
- Review feedback provided on the article talk page by your peers and make the necessary modifications and final additions to the article.
- Article ratings on Wikipedia & how to get there
- Uploading images, and adding images to articles
- Handouts and videos: Uploading images handout, Uploading files to Wikimedia Commons video, Evaluating Wikipedia article quality brochure, Article assessments video, Evolution of an article video
- Assignment
- Deadline March 19, 2012
- Expand your article into an initial draft of a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
- Milestone
- The American Democracy Project Wikipedia Article has been updated.
- The Civic Commitment page has been thoroughly developed connecting concepts to actual WSU projects.
Step 4: Did you know
- For new articles, compose a one-sentence "hook," nominate it for "Did you know," and monitor the nomination for any issues identified by other editors.
- Begin expanding your article into a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
