I'm Back, Help Me!

Hello folks. Sorry to frig off with no warning. Summer has been way busier than I expected, I do event stuff and it is seasonal. I will be back more regularly after the Halifax Pop Explosion is over.

So, please, if someone out there wants to take a good deal of control over this project I would appreciate it. I will have tonnes of time in october but we should probably get to work on some new articles. I guess, I am saying, do not be afraid to change the focus of the moment and stuff without me! Please?

I think we need to work on the HRM article, it seems to be suffering again. What do we say? WayeMason 23:49, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Nominated Articles

Region of Queens Municipality, Nova Scotia I think this should really really really be built up, its the other Regional Municipality and we have all overlooked it... WayeMason

Introductions

Hey folks. Lets start by having you all contribute to the description of the project, and we should start a list of the first five or six Nova Scotia Focus Articles. What do you want to see edited, added to, etc?

In addition to the focus article, if anyone wants to help me with the county templates that would be great. Only half the county pages hav the new template. I need someone (or several someones) to help me look up the data on the Stats Can website. As far as I can tell, all of the data about average earnings is wrong, its average per person not average per family. WayeMason 00:27, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Here's what I did earlier today:
- updated individual county pages with the template
- I must have missed your comment re. average earnings Waye, I put median household income for all of them as per the footnote on the template - are we changing this to individual earnings per person?
- created categories for counties, if they didn't already exist
- created subcategories for people from these counties, if they didn't already exist (may have missed one or two counties though)
- placed as many things that I could find from communities, etc. into these county categories
- totally recategorized the HRM stuff - created the "Halifax Regional Municipality" category and sub categories for it and moved everything over - we'll probably need to create more sub categories, ie. for cemeteries, media, etc.

So, maybe starting a project right before Xmas was a bad idea. But we are all back now... I am inviting Frank Costanza and Kirjtc2 to participate in the project. I think that the template that they were putting up last night is great, and to reduce the redundency/overlap I am going to take the NS counties off of the sidebar. IF IT IS OKAY I want to put a link from your new template from the NS project page, and I too will start adding it to pages.
Dartmouth is not a city. Cole Harbour is not a town (and never was). So thats a concern to me, because its factually incorrect...
One thing, which NS flag are we using? the light blue one or the dark blue one? Just being, you know, anal.
One other thing. I still think the core NS page needs a lot of work, but is does anyone else have a page they want to nominate for being the next page to work on? WayeMason 13:06, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

New focus?

Kings County? then work our way through the other counties by population?WayeMason 15:47, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Fine, I picked a new one. North End, Halifax here we go. WayeMason 00:57, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

I just saw you nominated North End which is good - I hadn't really taken the time to read the article and found it very lacking... Great choice! I'll also take the time to express my thanks to you Waye for taking the initiative in organizing the WikiProject. Very motivational to have this established and I'll be checking in more often after I'm back from a work-related trip later this week and next.Plasma east 02:12, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Joining the WikiProject

Hey, I'm a student at Dal and I've got some experience editing Wiki articles. I'm up for contributing to this project. A lot of the Nova Scotia articles here are pretty awful. 129.173.185.53 05:45, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, that's me right there in the last comment. The Chief 05:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Agreed, agreed. Just add youself and take crack at the North End page. We need to get a list of potential future web pages, and we need to add the wikiproject: Nova Scotia tag to every darn page. I think a good place to start is upgrading the town pages that are linked off of the NStemplate, many of them are stubs. WayeMason 13:02, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Another volunteer

If there's anything I can do to help with this project, I'd be more than happy to assist (though, unfortunately, I have a number of other commitments that will limit my contributions). Here’re a couple of suggestions: First, I notice there’s nothing about the Atlantic Film Festival, I’ve worked in the film industry for a number of years and I’d like to contribute an article on the AFF. Secondly, I wonder if the article on

Culture, Sport and Media in the Halifax Regional Muncipality
couldn’t use a serious tidying. A good start would be to restore the missing "i" to "Muncipality" [sic] in the article's header! --OldCommentator 01:51, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Never mind, I did it myself. --OldCommentator 02:25, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Also, regarding that same article, I think it would be much cleaner to have a page for culture (i.e., music, film, visual art, theatre, dance and architecture), a page for sport, and a third for media (i.e., newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations). What does the group think? --OldCommentator 02:25, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Good ideas. I was thinking the same thing today, actually, watching the HRM Culture, Media, Sport section start to grow... lets move the debate to the talk page of the article! WayeMason 02:27, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Former Cities

Hey everyone, I was just thinking that because everyone that views the HRM article is a bit confused as to why it is more built up then the former cities articles. Rather then make a complicated merge why don't we just revamp the former cities articles (Halifax, Dartmouth, and Bedford) and add a little bit more information to these articles, possibly making them a focus at some point. Also we could add a more in-depth description of why regional municipalities differ from cities. Hopefully this will clear up some confusion. Theyab 22:31, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, just wanted to say so far so good, everything is starting to at least take shape. Theyab 22:33, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I think part of the probem with making good wiki out of HRM and its issues is that it is an evolving situation that has no clear resolution in sight. We can say that its likely that "Halifax" will be the name of the region, or we can say that "Dartmouth" increasingly applies to the area inside of the 111, but its all too new to be definitive. Any attempt to write an explaination of the changes in the way people in communities and neighbourhoods in HRM self identify, well, it feels like new research, and theory rather than reporting on accepted facts, encyclopedia style...

Practically, I don't think that we are likely to have really long bedford, musqudoboit etc articles. They may always be stubs. Should we create one big article because of it? Halifax neighbourhoods and communities?WayeMason 17:27, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Ahh, yeah I didn't really think of that. The idea of writing so much information about each individual city/town probably would be a bit tedious and overwhelming, maybe a short sentence here or there in each article would be sufficent but anymore then that probably would clutter the whole thing up. Although I like the idea of a seperate article for the Halifax neighbourhoods and communities, this might better explain the roles of these outlying communities on the actual core of the HRM (or just Halifax itself) and it would better organize these articles/stubs. If anyone would like to add a suggestion please feel free. Theyab 03:13, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Yay us... what next?

Six people contributed to

Culture, Sport and Media in the Halifax Regional Municipality from our project since it was nominated! Congrats to all of us. I think it needs a general edit and then we can all move on. Its good to see the project pick up steam. What do we want to focus on next? Lets have some more nominations, personally, I would love to see someone nominate something I have never worked on before! WayeMason
14:18, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Come on fellas, I don't want this to be the WayeMason show. We did good work on the last two articles, one of you needs to nominate a third... WayeMason 12:16, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I always thought a lot of the small town articles (not just NS but elsewhere too) need some work... Amherst, Nova Scotia could use a little expansion, for instance... Kirjtc2 13:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Maybe we could start the article for Halifax's outlying towns and communities. How about Outlying communities of Halifax? Once again, this article is still only a suggestion and I could scrap the idea at any time, but what does everyone else think? Oh, I also like Kirjtc2's Suggestion of expanding the small town articles (especially Amherst!). Anyways that's my suggestion. Theyab 22:34, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
How about this order - Amherst, Communities of HRM, and then Queens RM? WayeMason 15:06, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
sounds good to me.Theyab 23:05, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

I would like to join the project

I am from Nova Scotia and know a lot about it, that is why I would like to join. Mikeee 22:24, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Welcome! Please consider working on a short economic and or history section toAmherst, Nova Scotia. God knows i have not had time... heh. Also, there is housekeeping we all need to to, in placing project boxes on all pages, and now, the town infobox. I have what I consider a draft done on the amherst page, please feel free to edit! If we can all work to get the info box on all the nova scotia towns linked of the provincial info box, that would be a lot of good wiki... WayeMason 23:43, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

I too would also like to join.

Hi, I am from Nova Scotia (Amherst, in fact!) and I would like to help out WikiProject Nova Scotia because I wish to help expand the Amherst article, to give people better information on Amherst. Maybe I could also get a couple of photos as well.--

Queens Region

Hows everyone doing out there? Welcome to the new project members... I think we were unable to muster a lot of enthusiasm about the Amherst page, I know I was really busy here in Halifax leading into the Juno weekend... but anyway, I moved the focus onto Queens. I hope we do go back and finish Amherst in our own time, I found some really nice articles on Amherst history I have yet to have time to turn into a short history section, for example. Anyway. Queens is the forgotten regional municipality, the smallest of the three. I have updated the page to the ns town template and will fill it with data today. The page is pretty much empty, so ideally we need to do a pile of work... Giv'er! WayeMason 00:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject Nova Scotia Userboxes

There should be a userbox for those who are in the project, for them to put on their userpages, and automatically inserts the names into a category. Right now I don't have the time to make one, since I need to shut down for the night. Who else thinks that's a good idea? --

New guy

Hi all - thought I'd sign up. I'm a native Bluenoser, current resident of Halifax's north end and net nerd since the late '80s. I created stubs for

The Hydrostone and, while my edits have mostly been on music-related articles, I'm eager to participate in this project. I'm still coming up to speed with some of wikipedia's inner workings, but if y'all bear with me I'll be happy to help. --RobHutten

Project directory

Hello. The

WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2

Town Template

Hi gang, this one is a lot of work as it will in many cases require emailing the town to get a crest, motto, and such, and also a visit to Stats Can to get the current population, etc.... WayeMason 21:52, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
