PokerSites.com Creating Spam Pages on Wikipedia

They created this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PokerSites in an attempt to game the search engines and rank their wikipedia page highly for the term poker sites which is a big money term in the online gambling industry. The citations they've used are often irrelevant and the information about their CEO isn't only a lie, but is a complete fabrication. The owner and CEO is called Nick.

This is an absolute blatant attempt at using Wikipedia for personal gain and adding absolutely nothing of value. This webmaster obviously cares nothing about adding to Wikipedia as a resource but instead wants to find creative ways to leverage Wikipedia's power for his own personal gain.

I hope this page is deleted as it is pure spam.

dietpal.org

The IP and NutrientGirl have no contributions to Wikipedia except to add nutritional tidbits referenced to dietpal.org to many articles. This recent effort comes across as inappropriate

WP:REFSPAM to me, but the info may be useful to some readers, and the effort may be good faith rather than spamming. So I'm just seeking a second opinion. Thoughts? Deli nk (talk

The majority of my contributions so far have been focused on adding phytochemical[1] information on popular fruits and vegetables to the encyclopedia. This is an area that has been significantly lacking and so it seems prudent to fill in the holes.NutrientGirl (talk) 19:50, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

The site is simply a copy of the USDA nutrition and nutrient databases. Use those as sources instead. For example, you made this edit to cantaloupe; the USDA nutrition database SR-25 has a report for cantaloupe, and has reports for the flavonoid content of foods. Reports can be accessed from the online USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. Mindmatrix 21:16, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up, but the USDA/SR-25 report does not include phytochemical content. To find phytochemical content in the USDA databases, one has to install 3rd party software and either search a large Access database or a 100-page PDF file; this is precisely why no one has added this (extremely useful) information already. Seems more reasonable to go to a (more useful) secondary reference in this case. NutrientGirl (talk) 21:29, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
The dietpal website does not give any information about where it got its data from. On Wikipedia you have to cite
WP:Reliable sources
. So, you don't have to use the USDA website, but your secondary reference has to be reliable; and a reliable secondary reference with this information would be an excellent addition to these articles.
There is just no information at dietpal.org to let us know how reliable it is. Why, by the way, do you trust it? Maybe there is some information on the web that you found that shows its reliability?

Spam links pointing to www.easybusinessposters.com

Someone has been adding sections to articles about politicians or laws that point to this domain as a reference and suggest buying posters to comply with the law. The domain just happens to sell the recommended posters. From the articles I have examined so far, the editor was either an IP or an account with exactly one edit. Some questions:
  1. Would it not be better to have a specific template for this?
  2. Does the bot take into account that some pages contain blacklisted links where the specific link is whitelisted?
  3. What is the name of the bot?
  4. How does it handle this, does it parse out all external links from a WikiPage and then check them against the regexes on the black/whitelists?

The script as it's currently written will follow the global blacklist and local blacklist and ignore the ones found on the whitelist, or the exceptions list for the bot. To answer your questions:
  1. The template was specifically for this bot. I made it.
  2. Yes it does. It also has an exceptions list.
  3. Cyberbot II
  4. Yes. It draws from the externallinks table in the database. Resource conservative measures have been developed to reduce the stress load when it runs.

A bit a problem with the name may be that it suggests that everything on the blacklist is actually spam - that is not necessarily true (more generally, it are links that have been abused to a level that other measures don't help anymore).
Pff, I wish I could use that database for m:User:LiWa3 - but I am afraid that that would be too slow. I'll just be strain on the server ;-).

IP Bashing

This is ridiculous. There are plenty of people who edit, peaceably, who don't register an account. There are even people who have registered account who prefer to edit anonymously under their IP account.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time on Noticeboards, looking over disputes and the serious cases I see of spamming involve registered accounts (normally PR firms or businesses) who write self-promotional articles on themselves and/or their clients. In fact, you might need to have a registered account to create a new article (I'm not sure).

While many vandals might have IP accounts, it is incorrect, unfair and inaccurate to assume bad faith because someone uses an IP account rather than a registered one. It shouldn't be "proof" of anything, and especially not merit being the first criteria on your list. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 17:55, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
