Bryoni Natalie Govender (born 17 July 1996) is a South African lawyer, model, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe South Africa 2023 and Miss Supranational South Africa 2024.[1] [2][3] She was appointed Miss Supranational South Africa 2024 and Miss Universe South Africa 2023 after finishing as the first-runner-up at the Miss South Africa 2023. Govender represented South Africa, where she placed in the top 20, at the Miss Universe 2023 pageant by virtue of being the first runner-up as Natasha Joubert, the original winner of the pageant, previously competed at Miss Universe.[4][5][6][7][1][3]

Background

Govender was born to parents of South African Indian descent[2] [3] in Kempton Park, Gauteng.[7] She is a qualified lawyer who is working as a trainee associate, whilst awaiting admission to become an attorney.[6][8][7][9] She had said her role model and the one person she would like to meet is Aishwarya Rai, an Indian actress who is primarily known for her work in Hindi and Tamil films and the winner of the Miss World 1994.[1][2][3]

Pageantry

Miss Universe 2023

In August 2023, Govender finished as the first runner-up at the Miss South Africa 2023.[3][10] She will be the first South African of Indian descent[2][11] [1]to represent South Africa at Miss Universe since 1998.[7][3] It has been 25 years[2] since South Africa had an Indian representative at the Miss Universe pageant.[2] This after Miss SA 1997, Kerishnie Naicker was placed in the top 10 at the Miss Universe pageant in 1998.[2] She represented South Africa at the 72nd Miss Universe competition held in El Salvador on November 18, 2023, where she placed and finished in the top 20.[5] She will now represent South Africa at the upcoming Miss Supranational 2024 making her the first South African of Indian descent to compete.[4][6][12][13]

Personal life

Govender works as an admitted attorney and currently, she is dating former Kaizer Chief striker Samir Nurkovic.[14]
