Academic career
In 1964, he enrolled at the University of London as a student of Romanian.[5] At SSEES, Deletant successively held the positions of Assistant Lecturer in Romanian Language and Literature (from 1969), Lecturer in Romanian Language and Literature (from 1972), Senior Lecturer in Romanian Studies (from 1988), Reader in Romanian Studies (from 1993), and Professor (from 1996).[2]
Besides his longtime affiliation with SSEES, Deletant served from 1990 to 1999 on the board of the British Government's ‘Know-How Fund for Central and Eastern Europe’. He was actively involved in that organization's work in Romania and in the Republic of Moldova, was Rosenzweig Family Fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2000 and 2001, and was Professor of Romanian Studies at the University of Amsterdam (on secondment from UCL) from 2003 to 2010.[3]
Awards
He was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1995 and was awarded the Order of Merit with the rank of commander for services to Romanian democracy in 2000 by President Emil Constantinescu of Romania.[3] In 2016 he was awarded by President Klaus Iohannis the Order of the Star of Romania, Officer rank.[6]
He has also been awarded a number of Honorary Degrees from different Academic Institutions.
