Kiribathgala (Sinhala: කිරිබත්ගල) is a mountain located in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka, near the town of Pelmadulla in the Sabaragamuwa Province. It rises to an elevation of approximately 948 m (3,110 ft) with a prominence of around 799 m (2,621 ft).[1]
Etymology
The name Kiribathgala translates to "Milk Rice Rock" in Sinhala (kiri = milk, bath = rice, gala = rock), likely referring to the pale colour of the summit's rock or traditional folklore.
Geography
Kiribathgala lies in the southern hill region of Sri Lanka and is part of the highland zone near Pelmadulla. The mountain is surrounded by tropical forests and tea plantations, with its upper sections characterized by large granite outcrops.[2]
Hiking
Kiribathgala is a moderately popular hiking destination, especially during the month of February around Sri Lanka's Independence Day.[2] The hike to the summit typically takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on trail conditions and weather. The trail features shaded forest paths, rock surfaces, and occasional steep sections.[3]
Outdoor activities include hiking, camping, birdwatching, and rock climbing.[4]
Access
The base of Kiribathgala is accessible via road from Ratnapura or Pelmadulla. Buses run regularly to Pelmadulla, from where visitors can take a short walk or tuk-tuk to the trailhead.[3]
Conservation
Although not officially designated as a protected area, the forest surrounding Kiribathgala is ecologically significant and home to several endemic species.[2]
