Robert (Rob) Goodfellow (born October 24 1960 in Toronto, Canada) is a Canadian-Australian author, biographer, consultant editor, freelance opinion columnist, cross-cultural specialist, historian, Indonesianist, and social commentator.[1][2][3][4]

He has been a freelance opinion columnist for The Jakarta Post since 1993.

Goodfellow is a principal consultant with Cultural Consulting

Australian Federal Government lobbyist.[6]

He is the first non-Muslim academic to teach in the International Program of the Islamic University of Indonesia, a national private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (UII Yogyakarta).[7]

Education

Goodfellow holds BA Hons and Ph.D. degrees in modern Indonesian history from the University of Wollongong.[8][9]

His thesis The New Order and the Ideology of Anti-Communism was reviewed by Danny Yee in July 1998.[10]

He is currently an adjunct fellow and researcher at the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative (HADRI), University of Western Sydney.[11]

Career

Goodfellow is the co-biographer of William ‘Bill’ Roache, an English actor who is credited by Guinness World Records as the longest continually engaged actor in a television role.[12][13][14][15]

In 1999, Goodfrellow wrote The Green Iguana. It was reviewed by Danny Yee.[16]

It was reviewed again in July, 2007.[17]

In July, 2016, Goodfellow, with Jonathan Copeland and Peter O’Neill published THE PEN Y GWYRD HOTEL : Tales from the Smoke Room. The book was reviewed by Shyam G. Menon and Trevor James.[18][19][20]

In March, 2017, Goodfellow participated in a humanitarian mission to Liberia. He was one of three Illawarra health workers to make the trip. This continued their work with the Liberian community in the Illawarra, as supporters of the Wollongong-based Future of the Children Foundation.[21]

In 2020, Goodfellow was co-editor of a book by Thor F. Jensen, entitled Saltwater and Spear Tips: The World’s First Circumnavigation of the Island of New Guinea in a Traditional Sailing Canoe (2020).[22][23]

The book won the Expedition Book of the Year at the 2020 NAFF/Book Award (Nordic Adventure Film Festival) and has since been made into a feature length documentary, Sailau, which won the 2023 Best Nordic Film, Nordic Adventure Film Festival and the 2023 International Maritime Film Festival (US) Grand Prize.[24][25]

In September, 2021 Goodfellow, with Jonathan Copland, of Bali, and former Wollongong City Gallery director Peter O'Neill, wrote a new Balinese themed book entitled So many Delicious Years. The book was reviewed by the Illawarra Mercury.[26]

In 2023, Goodfellow co-edited a book by ‘Officer A,’ entitled Tiger! Tiger! Tiger! The Lindt Café Siege (2022). He was also the author’s co-literary agent. The book was shortlisted for the 2023 Ned Kelly Prize for True Crime Writing.[27][28][29]

In October, 2023, Goodfellow was quoted in the TERT, the independent UOW student magazine.[30]

Goodfellow is the editor of the Cenderawasih University (Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia) Sunrise Journal, as well as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Contemporary Indonesian Art.[31]

Goodfellow is a major shareholder in Allagai Bay Pty Ltd, an Australian company that manages Vanimo Surf Lodge, Lido Village, West Sepik, Papua New Guinea.[32]
