History

Erie Township was organized in 1878. It was named after Erie County, New York, the native home territory of its early settlers.[4]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.1 km2), of which 32.3 square miles (83.6 km2) is land and 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2), or 11.21%, is water.[3]

In the township the population was spread out, with 29.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.3 males.
