Greek philosophers

"Commentators have suggested that nearly every great Greek philosopher can be found within the painting, but determining which are depicted is difficult, since Raphael made no designations outside possible likenesses, and no contemporary documents to explain the painting." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_of_Athens

Cybrarian's note, I assure u books to explain Raphael's paintings are painted in her paintings and the recipient of her autobiography can be identified but I "hesitate to inquire." Further, philosophy has been using her School of Athens to personify philosophy for centuries and I do not expect philosophy to change. "nearly every great Greek philosopher can be found within the painting," We can easily identify Leo X, Michelangelo, Bramante, Pietro Bembo from portraits, and the man philosophy identifies as "Leonardo da Vinci." “Seek Knowledge of Causes” Ippolita Sforza

O.K., 'the moving finger having writ', Raphael is a hyperspace case. For the first time in history most of the pictures and biographies are gathered together in one place. I wonder where she found the time to study art, philosophy, natural science and paint her life story. (Not even mentioning Architecture, Archeology, Philosophy, Poetry (including Music), Theology, and Law .^) My logical answer is the University of Bologna. We know she paints in Mantua and Ferrara and Bologna is close by. I would not be surprised to find the books she paints on the shelves of that University Library in Latin. If Raphael paints people who paint themselves, does Raphael paint herself? Or, if Raphael paints painters, do painters paint Raphael? Yes, everybody paints her. What can I say? Beautiful woman, beautiful colors, fascinating linear, atmospheric and herstorical perspectives.
