This picture is a poor example of cover

Even with the Springfield Model 1861 black powder rifles in the picture the wall of the building would most likely make poor cover against an enemy with a Springfield or 1853 Pattern Enfield rifle. These rifles were able to penetrate more than four inches of wood at a thousand yards. Most infantry engagements during the Civil War happened at much shorter ranges.

The barrel also would be a poor choice of cover unless the barrel was filled with something dense like water or sand.
