Settlement began before 1812.

The town of Harrisburg (originally "Harrisburgh") was formed in 1803 from the towns of

(1808).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.9 square miles (103 km²), of which 0.03 square miles (0.08 km²), or 0.08%, are water.^[5]

New York State Route 177 crosses the town (east-west), and New York State Route 26 passes along the eastern part of the town. New York State Route 12 is an east–west highway through the middle of Harrisburg.

The Deer River flows northward from the northwestern section of Harrisburg.
