slice code

Is the .slice(0,1) code in the "remove autoedit" sample really necessary? I don't think there is likely to be more than one match of #pt-mysandbox a, so it doesn't seem to do anything... --Yair rand (talk) 21:08, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added that, but I copied it from a discussion. If you can test it and it works without, then please update. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:37, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Search engine index

Is it correct to say search engines don't find sandboxes? I Googled "Henry Atkinson" Hamilton nz and my sandbox was top of the search with notes I'm putting together for an article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnragla (talkcontribs) 23:07, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All pages can be indexed unless they include a template like {{User sandbox}}. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 00:28, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

Are categories added to sandbox pages supposed to make the page show up in the actual category lists? That does not sound wise. -- Lightkey (talk) 19:09, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's how the software works. It would be nice to have a way to say that a category should only list articles. Category code on sandboxes and drafts can for example be placed inside <nowiki>...</nowiki> or comment tags <!-- ... -->, or add a colon in front of "Category" to make a link to the category instead of placing the page in the category. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:59, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick answer. -- Lightkey (talk) 04:08, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know HTML, am I still able to edit wikipedia pages ? AADIZPEN (talk) 04:33, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Isn’t there something to prevent category addition?

IIRC it was {{Yourtemplate|nocat=yes}}

@
JohnSmith13345: That only works on templates which are coded to recognize |nocat=yes or similar (see Wikipedia:Category suppression). Most categories in sandboxes are not added by templates but directly in the page with [[Category:...]]. {{Draft categories}} is one way to deal with this. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:38, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply

Thanks for explaining that to me.

How to write Wikipedia Page

Guys I don't know anything about HTML or the function of those symbols on edit page, am I still able to write/edit wikipedia pages? AADIZPEN (talk) 04:49, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello- I just wanted to say you should probably, uh, learn to write an article if you intend on doing so but editing is pretty straight forward. Applejuiceandpeachh (talk) 06:30, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi a bit late to the party but I found it helpful to look existing articles HTML codes to learn to write/edit on wikipedia Atom Switch (talk) 20:02, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help Deleting a Personal Sandbox Page

So, I can't figure out how to delete a sandbox subpage once I am done with it... I have no further use for it. I've blanked the page contents completely, but it still shows up as existing. What can I do to delete it... On my toolbar in the More tab, all I see is the option to Move the page. I need to just flat out delete it. Any advice is welcome... Thank you. TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 21:55, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TadgStirkland401: Add the magic code {{db-u1}} at the top of the sandbox page, and an admin should turn up to delete it for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:17, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
John of Reading Thank you very much. TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 06:24, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hiding Sandbox link

I have that li#pt-sandbox { display: none; } in my Global.css page and it's not working anymore in here. Guessing something has changed, so is that command now something that only works from local.css page? --OneMember (Talk) 13:52, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@OneMember: Do you have MonoBook at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? It appears MonoBook requires li#pt-sandbox { display: none !important; }. I have updated the page.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:25, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Added that !important and now it works perfectly. Thank you PrimeHunter for the information. -OneMember (Talk) 13:15, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing information from the living person whom the article is about

I am working on my first article. It is about a member of a band, who does not have a Wikipedia page (the other band members and the band itself already have pages). I also speak to the subject of the article, via messaging a email and in person. Can I use what the person tells me personally as a source? For example, if I ask “where were you born?” and they tell me, would I be able to use this as a source? Carole Basinger (talk) 03:49, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Carole Basinger: Wikipedia:Verifiability requires published sources. You cannot used private knowledge or communication. This is not a general help page. You can ask questions at Wikipedia:Teahouse. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:57, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Curiosity Killed The Cath

I dont want people to see my sandbox and I dont want it to be.. Idk, anybody's? Basically i dont want pseople stealing/using my article until I submit it for puplishing or whatever. Will these things happen and can I prevent them from happening? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Applejuiceandpeachh (talkcontribs) 06:27, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It would be unprofessional for any editor to interfere with your sandbox unless you ask them for help with it, and I'd be very surprised if anyone steals or uses the contents. There is no way to prevent other editors from seeing your sandbox, but it is not indexed by Google, so they would have to search your editing history to find it. Just make sure that your sandbox does not contain any copyright material, libel or inappropriate material since an administrator could delete it if it contains illegal content. If you have some rival who follows your edits, then you could save the text offline until you are ready to submit it, copying the text to your sandbox and previewing, but never clicking "Publish" until it is complete and ready to submit for review, but that would be an extreme measure and unlikely to be necessary. How to create Sandbox in Lithuanain / or other language wikipedia?

Hi! I also use Lithuanian wikipedia and cant find instructions of Snadbox creation. fivetrees (talk)

@Fivetrees: The Lithuanian Wikipedia has not installed mw:Extension:SandboxLink which adds a sandbox link to the interface. But you can still create and edit a user sandbox like any other page. You can e.g. enter the wanted name like User:Fivetrees/sandbox in the search box and click the resulting link to create the page. See more at Wikipedia:User pages#Creating a subpage. What to do about redirect notice in my sandbox?

There is currently a redirect notice from something I was previously working on in my sandbox but I want to work on a new article in it now. Can I just clear that out and work over it or is there something else that should be done first? -- Carlobunnie (talk) 19:24, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just delete the redirect and start typing your new content. The redirect is not needed if the article has been accepted. Dbfirs 20:14, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've done this for you. Dbfirs 20:21, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is my sandbox private?

So is my sandbox visible to anyone or is it only visible to me User3749 (talk) 12:22, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@User3749: All edits at Wikipedia are public. By looking through Special:Contributions/User3749 and clicking the "diff" links anyone can view the changes you have made. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:39, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

But how to make my sandbox only visible to me User3749 (talk) 12:41, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@User3749: That is not possible unless you never save the page but only preview it. If you want to continue on it later then you would have to keep an offline copy. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:17, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do Sandboxes self-delete?

Is there a time limit on sandboxes? Do they expire and get deleted after a period of inactivity or something like that? Thomas Norren (talk) 11:53, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Thomas Norren, No. Sandboxes do not expire unless you delete one. Over5help55 (talk) 21:33, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thomas Norren, by the way, to delete one use the magic code! Over5help55 (talk) 21:35, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thomas Norren, the code is db-u1. Over5help55 (talk) 21:35, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's {{db-u1}}, assuming the sandbox is in your own userspace. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:07, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spam too?

Like, other than copyrighted, business or offensive stuff, can we do anything in a Sandbox? Like spamming? I don't know... just asking. It will be cleaned after all. I am Being Here to Help You (talk) 08:03, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
