The earliest European-American settlement of the village site was by Hezekiah Carpenter, who arrived in 1770 and
The formerly separate village of Locustville, which grew up along Brushy Brook, is now part of Hope Valley. A dam and mill were built at the site of Locustville in 1820. In the late 19th century the Locustville mill property was taken over by the Nichols and Langworthy Company, which had operated the Hope Valley mills since 1835.[6]
There are conflicting versions of the origin of the village's name. The word "Hope" is the Rhode Island motto and used in various place names in Rhode Island. The phrase is used on the

Hope Valley is located at 41°30′27″N 71°42′59″W / 41.50750°N 71.71639°W (41.5075, -71.7164).[10]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.1 km2 (3.5 mi2). 8.5 km2 (3.3 mi2) of it is land and 0.5 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it (5.43%) is water.

Of the 723 households, 33.1% had children under the age of 18; 53.3% were married couples living together; 21.0% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present. 25.4% of households consisted of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[12] The average household size was 2.8 and the average family size was 2.9.[16] The percent of those with a bachelor’s degree or higher was estimated to be 14.2% of the population.[17]
21.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 32.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44.0 years. For every 100 females, the population had 93.0 males.[12] For every 100 females ages 18 and older, there were 90.4 males.[12]

There were 630 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.4 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $43,264, and the median income for a family was $47,857. Males had a median income of $33,462 versus $28,125 for females. The
