History

Kennard was platted in 1882, and named for Jenkins Kennard. Cyrus Hinshaw helped to found the town and was instrumental in having the town named for Jenkins Kennard. Hinshaw Street was named after Cyrus and his family. On April 3, 1974, a multi-vortex F4 tornado hit Kennard, Indiana. The storm removed the entire second-story of the Kennard High School and destroyed 70% of the Town, including the Kennard Town Hall and fire station. 17 people were injured and one newborn child was killed in the storm.^[5]

The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.31.

The median age in the town was 34.3 years. 30.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.4% were from 25 to 44; 20.2% were from 45 to 64; and 12.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 51.2% male and 48.8% female.

The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males.
