Raised in a middle-class family in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, amidst five siblings, Purnima Mahato's ascent in the competitive world of archery exemplifies the essence of perseverance, hard work, and determination. Her archery journey began at age 10, sparked by a training session at an institute linked to the TATA academy, with nothing but a homemade bow and arrow and her family's full support. In 1987, her commitment to archery took a professional turn as she joined the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur for formal training, overcoming the societal and economic hurdles that often discourage female athletes in Jharkhand. Purnima's story is an inspiring narrative of an Indian girl transforming into a champion sportsperson, driven by an indomitable spirit and unwavering passion.

Career
As a child, Mahato watched archery at a range in Birsanagar, Jamshedpur.[7] She trained there before moving to a range at Burmamines, Jamshedpur when the one in Birsanagar closed.[7] She made it to the Indian national team in 1992, and moved to Delhi to train with the team.[7]
As an archer, Mahato earned medals in both national and international archery competitions.
Coaching
Mahato is an archery coach. Starting in 1994, she coached at the Tata Archery Academy, a position she had held as of 2012.[1][8][12] Archers she has personally coached include 2012 Summer Olympian Deepika Kumari.[13][14][15][16][17][18]
Mahato has been a coach for Indian national teams at several events
Mahato was selected to represent India at the 2012 Summer Olympics as the national team's coach.[1][25][26]
Awards
Purnima Mahato was awarded Padma Shri from President of Indiafor 2024 on 22 April 2024.[27] Purnima Mahato was awarded
