That second period in hospital had nothing to do with his mortar shell wounding. Far more serious is wrong claim that Hemingway was 'posted to Paris as a foreign correspondent. He wasn't at all. He moved to Paris on the promise that the Star would buy whatever he filed if they liked it.

But Michael Reynolds, who perhaps did more research and double-checking than previous biographers tells us in an epilogue that he only added 'facts' about Hemingway's life he could independently verify. For this 'fact' the only source is Hemingway himself, and now know he made up a great deal.

  • 15:5815:58, 31 July 2018 diff hist +6 m Harold LoebI've been reading a lot of the background to the novel, including Lesley M M Blume's account of its genesis, and to state Duff Twysden (Brett Ashley) was Loeb's 'mistress' would be misleading. Apparently, their affair was brief, no longer than a few weeks, but 'mistress' implies a longer-standing more formal relationship.
