Military career

Lieutenant General Johnson grew up in Texas and Oklahoma and holds a bachelor's degree in history from the Virginia Military Institute. He was commissioned as an infantry second lieutenant upon graduation in 1977. He has a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and two master's degrees from the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

As a company grade officer, he was an infantry platoon leader, scout platoon leader, and company commander with the 1st Battalion,

Fort Irwin, California. His next operational assignment was as the division war plans officer for the 8th Infantry Division, Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He later served as a brigade operations officer in the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division and as the executive officer for the 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, in Baumholder
, Germany.
