Classification as an independence referendum

This article was recently removed from the list on the Independence referendum article, and from Category:Independence referendums.

IMO the wording strongly suggests this was about independence – referring to being a "sovereign state, a subject of international law". Numerous reliable sources do describe this vote as an independence referendum, including the Associated Press or academic papers like this. This Al Jazeera article goes into some depth about the meaning of the referendum and basically suggests it was a fudge "to satisfy both Moscow and Tatar independence activists".

Even if it is classed as something in between autonomy and independence, I think we should still continue to categorise/list it under both types. Cheers, Number 57 01:27, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
