Season count

This is the 41st season the Sabres have played in the NHL. There was no season played in 04/05 thus this is the Sabres 41st season. They celebrated their 40th anniversary the previous season. They have existed for 42 years as a franchise. — Comment added by Ericando (talk • contribs)

It's the Sabres 42nd season in the NHL, as the franchise wasn't suspended during the lockout. Follow the examples used at

They've played 41 seasons. It's not that complicated of a thing. They celebrated their 40th anniversary the season before. To call this season 42 will only confuse readers. You're not undestanding this properly. The Buffalo Sabres had a season in 2004-05, even though they didn't play any games. The franchise still existed & operated during 2004-05. An NHL season is more then games played. If you still disargee? seek advice at

I understand it but I couldn't disagree more. A season is games played. A year of operation is a year of operation. The team's 20th anniversary season was 1989-90. The 30th anniversary was 1999-10. The 40th was to be 2009-10. It was postponed to 10-11 due to the lockout because there was no season played in 04-05. This disagreement is stupid. The article was worded fine before. It's at least more understandable with "(41st season of play)" included but I still think it reads awkwardly. Eric Ando (talk) 03:52, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nitpicking: The Sabres celebrated their 40th anniversary of becoming a franchise, which falls in the year 2010 - not necessarily their 40th season or 40th season of play. Anyways there's an inconsistancy among the NHL franchises, just look at the Ottawa Senators. The Sens are celebrating their 20th anniversay during 2011-12. If franchises are celebrating via season, then the Senators have recognized 2004-05 as a season. GoodDay (talk) 14:26, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore the 'awkwardness' you mention, will lead people towards finding & learning of the 2004-05 lockout. Where's the way you preffered it, less familiar readers would've mistakenly thought that the Sabres 'first season' was 1971-72, instead of 1970-71. GoodDay (talk) 14:30, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
