Juliet of the Spirits

Alice is very similar in its content to Juliet of the Spirits by Federico Fellini, one of Woody Allen's favorite directors. Allen has made remakes of several other Fellini films, such as as Stardust Memories or Amarcord as Radio Days, so it would not be a first.

As examples of the similarities between the films:

  • Both Juliet and Alice are the title character of their respective movies.
  • Both Juliet and Alice live in luxury and wear sophisticated clothes and live in tasteful places with servants. Both are very kind to their household staff.
  • Both Juliet and Alice live in an upper-middle class world that they pretend to enjoy but that really oppresses them.
  • Both Juliet and Alice had trouble with their mothers and reconcile with their sister.
  • Both Juliet and Alice find comfort in their husband, only to find out later that he is in fact cheating on them. The woman the husband is cheating with is not some fling but a woman that Juliet or Alice finds to be much more successful than her. In the case of Alice, this is true of both her husband and her lover.
  • Both Juliet and Alice seek help from ghosts and spirits. Alice meets two ghost: her former lover and her mother, as well as her muse, a spirit.
  • Both Juliet and Alice consider as a solution leaving their husband for another, more attractive man, who is not classically attractive, but whom they think has more depth and substance.
  • Both Juliet and Alice are offered drugs for the first time in their lives in the films.
  • Both Juliet and Alice remember their strict Catholic childhood and both find a solution in reaction to it: Juliet by rejecting it, Alice by rejoining it.

While there are also many differences, the list of similarities is considerable. However, by Wikipedia standards, this would constitute original research.
