Conscription

The Atholl Highlanders were in existence during WW2, yet saw no action. Was membership of the regiment sufficient for people to avoid conscription into the 'regular army'? 161.73.37.81 19:38, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No. The regiment has been a purely ceremonial one since its formation in 1839 (although its structure may have been used as a basis for the local Home Guard, but that is speculation on my part). Unless members of the regiment during the Second World War were in reserved occupations, or had a medical reason for not being on active service, then they would have been called up. Nope, ther're a real organisation. They were shown on the BBC documentry programme "The Game Keeper" a few years ago. Since its mostly made up today of game keepers and rangers its a fair bet to say that it includes some of the best sharp shooters in any "army" Lurker-in-the-Dark (talk) 18:34, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a former member of the Clan Murray Society of North America(I haven't kept my payments), and a descendant of Clan Murray of Atholl, I'm insulted by the notion that this is some sort of hoax. The Atholl highlanders were granted charter by Queen Victoria, “in perpetuity". There was talk of disbanding the regiment in recent years, but I'm glad to see that they are still standing. Whoever posted this (I see you're too cowardly to have signed in), please do some more research beyond Wikipedia, before you go about insulting other peoples' heritage. Training and armament

Anyone have any information on these? Conspicuous by their absence in an article on a military unit. If they are unarmed, as might be expected of a purely ceremonial private force, this is notable, and an explanation of how this would fit with guard duties would certainly be in order. A photo is included in the main article. However, here's a description, as best as I can describe it, of the uniform. A Murray of Atholl tartan kilt & sporran, either a dark blue button down jacket over a white uniform shirt with a high collar, or (for the pipe and drum band) a dark blue and red uniform jacket over a red dress uniform shirt, a Murray of Atholl Tartan shoulder plaid (pinned in place by the Murray of Atholl brooch), a dark blue Glengarry(also with a Murray of Atholl pin, on the left side of the Glengarry, holding a Murray plant badge ---a juniper sprig--- in place), a white shoulder belt, a white kilt belt, red kilt hose (with red flashes), and black Ghillie Brogues with silver buckles. bodyguards

this article describes them as bodyguards, but also as ceremonial. Does that mean they are only ceremonial bodyguards, or are they actually an effective combat force? 67.176.160.47 (talk) 05:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The regiment is a personal bodyguard in much the same way as the Sovereign's Bodyguard is - while in the past they will have undertaken actually guarding duties, as indicated when they provided guards during Queen Victoria's visits, today they are purely for ceremonial Hammersfan (talk) 18:23, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
