The section on franchises could use an introductory explanation of what a franchise is (e.g., just different webpages within Barstool, or independently owned/operated; separate or shared employees, etc.), along with citations for the content in that section. ––Agyle (talk) 06:10, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, I haven't been able to find a source outside of a few mentions in the blog posts themselves that accurately describe the "franchises." I am more than ok with a different term being used. TheWarOfArt (talk) 15:23, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to partnering with AOL it looks like Barstool now has link partnerships with Huffington Post among other sites but haven't been able to source it yet. A lot of sloppy writing here.

The site has been criticized... by critics... (You don't say?) Comments that have sparked debate include... (Maybe pretend to have NPOV? If comments spark debate then YOU the editor are claiming that they were controversial. People can become outraged over anything. After distributing the newspaper boxes at all of the local MBTA stops founder Dave Portnoy began printing the newspaper. During this time the original Barstool Logo was created using clipart. The paper included mostly sports gambling advice during this time. With columns involving Suffolk downs horse racing and Portnoy's "Mortal Locks". Throughout this era Portnoy was the only writer for the paper thus he wrote articles under pseudonyms and fake names. The ads during this time were also mostly put into the paper without companies knowing as a means to get competitors of the fake ads to pay for real ads. The paper also had a radio show during this time called power hour on 1510 the zone with Portnoy Todd McShay and Elio Imborone who rarely spoke. Thus the hour was mostly McShay and Portnoy arguing about current sports topics. Eventually, more writers came to write for Barstool although uncompensated these writers were Jamie Chisholm Pete Manzo and Jerry Thorton who is still employed by the company. Thorton has described the paper as "being the voice of the fans they really couldn't get any other place". At the time Portnoy began hiring models for photoshoots to later be displayed on the front of the paper. This was highly effective in attracting new readers. Although no actual statistics were provided Portnoy has been instant about this. After the addition of the women to the covers, bars began paying to have ads in the paper believing this would attract customers thinking the cover girls would be at the bars. This led to the first Barstool sponsored party at Ned Devine's in Faneuil Hall. In attendance were many of the barstool writers thus many readers were in attendance to meet the people writing from which they read. This fandom lead in part to the expansion with new writers and advertisers. Basically they found that over 40 more anonymous Twitter accounts have every indication of being controlled by Barstool. The network of fake accounts have laundered incalculable amounts of copyright-protected sports and entertainment videos and reaped billions of views over at least the last four years. One account of many Barstool used to harass the comedian Miel Bredouw , did nothing but rip and post copyrighted sports highlights and other viral clips, which were then embedded and shared by official Barstool accounts. The method was a crude but effective way for Barstool to prevent their legit accounts from accumulating DMCA strikes. The account appeared like an odd blip, a remnant of an older, rowdier, and less corporate version of Barstool.
